COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 I liked the new course much, much better than the old course! Start on the Strip was great. Logistics need work: bag check was chaos, race info sheet was nonexistent, number pick up was awkward (standing in line to look up your number in a book... then standing in line to get your number), the start line-up was not well organized, and mile markers were way, way off. For the high registration fee, the T-shirt could be better. With a bit of work, this race could be great. You can do it, Devine! Las Vegas has all the ingredients! I'd run it again. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 Worst starting line organization ever. Non-runners were mixed with runners and walkers on a very narrow road. Where was the food at the finish? There was more focus on making money with finisher pictures than in taking care of runners after the race. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Well let me see... Devine claims to be a world-class race management organization. Not even close. They got a great course in a great location. There were great restroom opportunities at the start of the race. They also had a sub-four-hour coral. Packet pick up was a breeze. The rest sucked big time. No food at the finish and I finished under four hours? Give me a break. Whatever they had was minimal so I did not miss much at least. The race even started late... and the mile markers and clocks were at the most convenient places for the volunteers, but nowhere near where the miles actually were. Give me a break. Everyone that I talked to that was at the race told me that they gave up when they say that they were in trouble at 24... or was that 25 marked as 24? Nobody ever found out. Even my friends that got a PR said that they quit on the race out of frustration. The rest stops were minimal at best. There were not many fans... and the organized fans were weak at best. Come on, Las Vegas and a world-class race organizer couldn't do any better than a marginal event? How embarrassing. Still, it is Las Vegas, a wonderful course... just do it as an event and ignore that it is put on incompetently and you should have the time of your life. There was a run through wedding chapel, there were Elvises, and you ran through the strip. The race has the potential to be great, but yet it sucks. Hardly worth doing, and I won't do it again unless I hear something wonderful has happened to make it a decent event. A great vacation; just stick to the vacation part of Las Vegas until they get their act together. They even got rid of the spinner medal. There was no communication. The race packet and expo provided you with no information. They did not even have any ties for your timing ciips. The shirts were pathetic... there were no finisher shirts... no band in the finishing area, the bag check made everybody put their bag into a identical race bag and then they just dumped them on the ground in random order. Huh? Start and finish in the same area and you can't sort the bag by number? A waste of money... but at least I have Nevada out of the way and I will do a different race for my second time through the 50 states. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 The Las Vegas Marathon was my first marathon. I had hoped for a better experience. I was satisfied with my personal performance. However I was disappointed by many aspects of the way the marathon was run. These are some of the areas that I felt were completely mismanaged. Devine should be ashamed of themselves for what they did. They should refund everyones money or offer free registrations to next year's race. I'll just run down the highlights. At the expo you pick-up your packet and t-shirt (a light blue, $3 tee, which is UGLY). The expo was ok, other than the fact that you where crammed in like cattle. This didn't make any sense to me because they had a huge area to pick-up your packets that wasn't being used. A little space management could've helped this situation and made the expo a little easier to get a around. Not enough porta-johns (which was a huge complaint last year, so how do you not get this right?!!). The start of the race should've been an indication of what was to come. There were no visible corrals. Runners were sliding down rocky embankments, as well as jumping over fences to get to the start line. Walkers and runners were mixed together. That was by far the worst national anthem I've ever heard in my life!! No one knew what they were playing. The race was supposed to start at 6:07 a.m., and it actually started 20 minutes later. The water stations and clocks for each mile marker were nowhere near the correct mileage. (How hard is this to do?!!) It's really hard to tell your pace when the mileage is wrong. At one point we where 2 min. ahead of pace the next mile we where 4 min. behind. I know the pace groups had a hard time with it. I know it kept some people in our group from hitting there personal goals. No food on the course anywhere!!!! We had to hurdle a 6" curb between mile 23 + 24!! At the finish line there was no water or food. When you crossed the line, they wrapped you with foil and gave you your medal (that was fine), but then you had to stand in line (25-30 people deep) to get your picture taken, which I thought at the time was part of the race (wrong!). So know I'm exhausted, thirsty, cramping in the legs, and I have to work my way about a 1/4 of a mile (exaggerating, 300 yards) to the food and drink area. There was no food other than bananas. Nothing to drink other than water and Gatorade. Overall my experience was, at the least, frustrating. Devine should be embarrassed to have run an event like this. This may be my first marathon, but I have many experiences with other races. I can assure you that this race was very poorly run!! | |

"Worst Organized Marathon I've Ever Run!!!" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 3 I have to agree with the majority of other runners comments for this year's marathon. The mile markers were totally off and there's no excuse for that, especially in a race this size. The water/Gatorade should be on both sides of the road. It does make it hard to work your way over to one side of road to get fluid when everyone in the pack is trying to do the same. As far as organization goes, I have run 16 marathons and have NEVER seen a more unorganized marathon! There was no one at the information booth at the expo on Friday morning and no one knew anything about where the baggage check would be, if they were providing a bag, or where the family reunion area would be after the race. The morning of the marathon they decided to pass out plastic bags for baggage check then everyone had to write their bib numbers on the bag. What a major mess!!! All marathons I've participated in did this prior to the morning of the marathon, thus easing the confusion and congestion at the baggage check. Food??? Where was the food after the race? I didn't see anything, although some others have said there were some small items. I heard some runners says the half marathoners ate all the food. If this is true then the food needs to be separated for the half and full participants - or at least make sure there's an adequate amount. I never did see the family reunion area; luckily my wife saw me finishing and was able to track me down in the finisher's area. I agree about the cheap short-sleeve cotton shirt. More and more marathons are giving out the running shirts, or at least a long-sleeve cotton shirt. Devine Racing even prints their slogan - "The power to finish" - on the shirt. It should read, "Most unorganized marathon." Getting into the correct corral and making your way through all the spectators was a nightmare. I've never had so much trouble making my way through to get to the proper corral. Running the strip was nice, but after Fremont Street it got boring. The only good points I have are the volunteers were outstanding. I always make it a point to thank the volunteers because without them we runners couldn't participate. Also there were an ample amount for port-o-johns at the start. I never had to wait in line, which was a first for a marathon, especially of this size. For a marathon of this size, Devine sure needs a lot of improvement to bring this event up to the level of a lot of smaller marathons. I will never run this marathon again and unless you're going to make a vacation out of it to visit Vegas a while after, I would never recommend this marathon to anyone else until there are MAJOR improvements! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Highs: Great start line experience with fireworks and the strip. First six miles had very enjoyable scenery. Great access from hotels to start line. Lows: Course markings could not have been worse... I'm still not sure if I ran 26.2! Minimal nutrition at the finish line. Race shirts were very disappointing. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 2 Just about everything about this marathon is bad. The course (other than the strip), the organization, (no food along the course or at the finish, the worst race shirt I have ever seen, misplaced mile markers, no race directions in packet, fast runners placed behind half marathon walkers, etc.), very few spectators (the website advertised 250,000).... Overall, a complete mess. I won't be running this one again unless I hear from reliable sources that it has drastically improved. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 The bad news is that my next mile was 10:30. No Gu packets, which I really needed. This was my 1st marathon. For my next race I will carry my own packets. Another bad things was they let the Las Vegas running club up front right before the start. So much for corrals. This is my own fault - I should have known Vegas is only good for drinking and gambling. I'll be back but not to run. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 3 A 16,000-person start, with 6-minute milers mixed with 10-minute milers and walkers. Great idea. Lots of clocks on the course, none of which corresponded with an actual mile marker. Sparse, but brave fan support on a cold windy day in Vegas. After weaving through a 1,000 half marathoners to finish, I wasn't sure if I was even on the marathon course. I immediately left the chute and headed out. If there was food, I'm sure it was no better than the rest of this race. And what an elite field. We waited 18 minutes to start so TWO elite women could take off early. Give me a break. Worst race I have run in recent memory - small or large. |
