"Fans good, slanted roads & transportation bad" (about: 2006)

My 4th marathon (Boston, Marine Corps, Old Vegas). I was very disappointed in the mile after mile of VERY slanted roads... extremely tough if you're battling lower leg injuries. Getting to the start was also very difficult and I was staying Downtown. Most roads were closed and it was nearly impossible to get even close to the start by taxi. Also, my wife could not meet me at the half point by either taxi or trolley due to closures, unlike what all of the race brochures and spectator guides said. Fan support was good, the weather held up and San Diego is beautiful, but I would not run this race again because of the very disappointing course design and poor transportation options.

"Well run, nice city, but not the greatest" (about: 2006)

San Diego is a great place and Elite puts on a good race. However, the course is a bit uninspired. The finish at the Marine Depot is a disaster for spectators and finishers alike. My family gave up trying to get in there and it was a mile walk after the finish to the trolley (no shuttle as the race advance info claimed).

This is a fun course with excellent organization. Plenty of water and Powerade stations. Lots of volunteers and some locals. Good expo and good post-race area. Good music along the route. It was a lifetime experience as a first timer and I am glad that I chose RnR San Diego.

"Fantastic Experience" (about: 2006)

This is my second marathon, and I was concerned about the elevation changes in the first half. Whew! NOTHING to worry about. The first half of the course is beautiful through the great downtown districts. The crowds were out in force and the weather held nicely. I had also been warned of the banked streets. Again, nothing too much to worry about. I was able to find level ground most of the time. Great music, great crowds, great support and a wonderful expo!

"Great first-marathon experience!" (about: 2006)

Wonderful first-marathon experience. Haven't been to San Diego in years and really enjoyed seeing so many of the local sights during the race. Beautiful location in the park to start but lines were very long for the portable latrines. Was great to start out in the mist/fog and just as good to see the sun after an hour or so. Great crowds, super race support from start to finish, and the bands were a big lift too, esp. in the later going. Agree with the comments about the difficulty navigating a slanting surface on the freeway. Hope my wife can run this one with me next year.

"Perfect weather, nice and rocking, but tough course" (about: 2006)

The weather was overcast, perfect for running the 06 RNR Marathon. I found the course to be nice and scenic, but it was tougher than I had anticipated, especially the 2 mile uphill on Highway 163. You have to be very careful because of the sloping, uneven pavement on the Highway. I would run a little on the concrete and a little on the asphalt, trying to find some even pavement, but I could not find any even pavement to run on. You have to be careful where your foot lands because you can easily roll your foot sideways and possibly turn an ankle on that Highway. Another challenge is the bridge around Mile 19 with the steep uphill. Even though the course goes downhill for most of the first 5 or 6 Miles the course has its share of significant uphills. The musical bands were great as well as the Finisher's Medal. Organization was well coordinated, such as shuttling the runners to the Start Line and back to the Airport Authority Parking Lot in a timely manner and the U.P.S. Trucks doing a great job in transporting the Gear Bags just like in the N.Y.C. Marathon. Overall, it was a nice experience, seeing The Gaslamp District and the different parts of San Diego which is changing alot. Don't expect to P.R. this course. Enjoy the scenery, the rockbands, and the Finisher's Medal.

"Marathon of Highways/Freeways" (about: 2006)

I was shocked to find that majority of the course was either on a freeway/highway. The roadways were uneven as if I was running on a slope. I lost count on how many inclines there were. However, the organization and the spectators were amazing!

"Good race for the casual runner" (about: 2006)

The organization was excellent. The volunteers were awesome (great cheerers)! The course was pretty good. My only complaint was the amount of the race run on sloped roads (to one side). It was my 11th and although not my favorite (Boston), I was very happy I ran it.

"First full marathon. Very well organized." (about: 2006)

For my first full marathon it was great. Loved all the water stations, and also the people holding the hoses spraying us down. I trained with TNT. Could not believe how many people out there with TNT I saw someone at every mile. It was great.

"Great for Runners - Tough for Spectators" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

The spectators and on-course support were awesome. The enthusiasm was overwhelming! The starting line area was good and the finish line was great although I never saw the promised beer. There were a few sections on the course that were tough for spectators to get to along freeways and bike trails. The 3 miles of incline on the freeway is offset by 3 miles of declines in the beginning and one mile of dramatic downhill at the end of the freeway section. Run on the sides of the freeways to avoid the camber (slope). This is a tough course for spectators, especially at the finish line. Parking is inadequate and getting into the MCRD is difficult. Private cars are a waste of time. The trolley is a must. Get trolley tickets at the expo not the day of the race.
