"My favorite marathon yet" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

"Awesome" is how I would describe it. I set a P.R. of 3:46, good enough to qualify me for Boston. And I even stopped to take pictures along the way. I felt the fan support and scenery was great. This was my first trip to California. I would definitely want to do this one again. I ran this marathon as a TNT runner for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which really made the whole event incredible.

"Great weather. Great music. Great scenery." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

I thought this was a great marathon. It was my third and my best time. The music was awesome, and the course was a good mixture of straight and level to curves and hills. The freeway running at the first few miles was hard because of the banks. As for the spectators, they were great and supportive, but if your were family and wanted to cheer someone on at, say, mile 20-22 and plan to get back to the finish line in time to see them cross the line, forget it. The only way back was I-5, and it was a parking lot. My family got back an hour after I finished. So I advise any friends or family to go straight to the finish if you care. As for the finish, I went to boot camp at MCRD and it was great running through the gates and onto the parade field. O-o-r-r-a-ah! I really enjoyed this one.

"Something missing..." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 4

I love San Diego but this marathon was a bit of a letdown. I would have gladly traded the music for better scenery; it seemed like most of the course was along or near freeways. My other complaint was the complicated parking/shuttles/contained finish area. Other cities have far simpler solutions; in the end I just gave up and took a taxi to the start line. I was then astounded that with grassy parade grounds all over the place, the runners? ?recuperation area? was all asphalt!

On the good side, I received a big lift at about mile 15 when one of the hula girls placed a lei around my neck. Enthusiasm was strong throughout the course.

"RNR marathon: overrated?" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I ran my first RNR marathon in 2003, and I was a bit disappointed. The organization of the event was GREAT.

My main complaint was the course. I found the course to be too problematic. The tilting of the road to the side made it very difficult to run - a marathon should be run on a near flat surface, not on the highway with lots of curves and bends (and hence the tilting) As a result, my knee was killing me by mile 7 - something that has never happened to me before. I heard other runners complain about that as well. They can also work on the water stations - need to even out more.

The crowd was nice. The bands were OK, but there are stretches of like 3-4 miles without any bands. On the other hand, it was a very scenic route and I enjoyed the views. The post-marathon festivities were fabulous, as well as the concert in the evening. However, many of us had to walk for another mile to catch the bus to get back to hotel - another big complaint for many of us after running such a marathon. I set a PR at the RNR marathon, but regrettably I will never do it again, due to the course and the tilting of the road. Unless, of course, they can make some change in the course.

"Lousy marathon" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 1  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

This is everything I don't like about large marathons: TNT people screaming, crowded, overly commercial, frickin' Elvis impersonators at the finish line wanting to sell you a photo of you and them - that says it all. The worst... I'll never go back

"Great 1st marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

If you haven't run a marathon, this is a great one for your first. Bands and fans are great!! Living in SD, the course could have been better by going more scenic. The worst part of the whole experience is the parking!

"No sun, but lot's of fun" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Very good organization. Plenty of aid stations that had personality (especially Margaritaville at mile 21). The bands were good, and they helped in the final 6 miles. Modest crowd support. The course was 'just o.k.', and turned very boring around mile 16+. Having said this, I would run again, just for the fun of it.

"A very fun marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my second RnR Marathon, and it was more fun that a person should be allowed to have running a marathon. Even though I missed qualifying for Boston by 8 minutes, it is still a great time; very organized, and the expo is great. Keep it going, and I hope to return someday.

D. K. from Phoenix, AZ (6/25/2003)
"Great First Marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my first marathon, and I was very impressed by just about everything here. The course was flat (the elevation changes were barely noticeable), the crowd support was good, and the race organization was incredible. The weather was also very good (cool and overcast), albeit a bit humid, but I live in Phoenix, so I guess it's all relative.

My only (somewhat) negative comment is that the 'band at every mile' thing really is more of a gimmick than anything else - the bands are mediocre at best, but thankfully, you really don't hear them for most of the race.

More than making up for this shortcoming is the fact that they give you a box of Krispy Kremes at the finish - what a perfect reward for running a marathon!

"Five times at this race and counting" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

It is a fantastic race for all.I have been doing with Team In Training (TNT) as a mentor/participant, inspite of some negative talk about TNT, all runners and walkers are very inspiring and nice to each other with one goal in mind and that is the great rock n roll medal.I talked to a few spectators who said they are as excited as the participants.Do this marathon and have a time of your life.
