"Awesome Marathon! Very challenging for me." (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I had previewed many runner comments about this marathon prior to registering. Frankly, I was very skeptical about it. I'm glad I chose to do it as I was pleasantly surprised. The weather was perfect, the organization awesome and the course challenging to me. I found the numerous hills and freeway overpasses to be hard for my inexperienced body (this was only my second marathon) but I pulled it off and came within 4 minutes of a four hour finish which was my goal. There was plenty of water/Gatorade and I got a kick out of the vaseline-on-a-stick at the aid stations. The medal is beautiful, and I loved finishing at the depot. The only gripe I had was the long line of shuttle buses out of the depot-instead I walked to the trolley as the chances of getting a cab to downtown were pretty slim. All in all, the experience was great. | |

"Great marathon Great city" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my third marathon. The first two being the Marine Corp marathon. The RnR San Diego marathon was great! I loved the course and felt that it was well organized. I didn't feel a lack of anything....food, water nor potties. The cheerleading and bands were awesome! I enjoyed the walk to the parking lot because it allowed me to do my post marathon walk as well as check out the cool military equiptment on display. My brother and his wife were there to cheer me on and thought it was sooooooo much fun. His wife cried while watching those touching moments at the finish line. This marathon has inspired me to run marathons in different cities. Suzuki....ROCK ON! | |

"Great Marathon" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my second marathon after Honolulu. It was a great experience. I felt so much better at the end of this marathon than i did in Honolulu. The weather was nice all the way. cloudy for the first 3 hours or so and then sunny with a cool breeze. it has quite a few gradual uphills, more than i was expecting. Spectators were great, a lot of water stops. Could use couple more Gu stops. The only thing i did not like about the course was running on the freeway. Everything else was great. you should try it. | |

"Great marathon!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I've run 4 of the 5 races - - missed the 2001 run because of injury. The race has improved dramatically. Great support by the organizers and fans. Bands are fun and the cheerleaders along the way help. R 'n' R marathon continues to improve each year. The course is scenic and festive and San Diego is a perfect city for holding such an event. The downhill stretches early on can be difficult with the slant of the road but can also make for a fast time. Plenty of support out on the course helped. The weather was perfect for anyone finishing under 3:40 as the cloud cover held until then. The walk from the finish line to the parkng area only took 10-15 minutes, not the 30 minutes some are saying (unless one couldn't locate his/her car in the massive parking lot). Those who complain about the jam getting in/out of the lot off the freeway just need to be creative. There are plenty of side streets to bring you to Washington Street rather than coming in off the freeway. Elite racing does a great job and they improve the organization of this marathon each year. The Marines were terrific also - - very helpful and polite. | |

"FANTASTIC Race!!!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was a great race in 2002. The weather worked out perfectly for those finishing in less than 4 hours or so. The course was pretty nice. It had some good downhill portions although I must agree much of the course 'leaned' either to the left or right leading to potential IT band injuries. The water stations were great and the bands added inspiration (although I think the no. of bands was over-stated). I set my PR at this race (marathon #9 for me). I was finally able to break the 3:30 barrier (by a full 6 minutes). The only course I've run that is set up for quicker times is Austin, Texas. Great race. I will run this one again certainly! | |

"Overall Great Experience!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon and I'm glad I picked this one to be the first. There was great crowd support, just the right amount of water/Gatorade stations. Could have used more than one gel station and definately more potties. I agree with others on the pitched roadway, it was tough on the knees and forced me to slow my pace. The start was very well organized, although it was crowded for the first 6 miles or so. I loved the bands and the cheerleaders along the way, very inspirational. The biggest problem was at the finish, the reunion areas were confusing, there was a big clog up trying to get out of the finishing area because of the commercial photo's before leaving the area. Other than that this was a terrific first marathon experience, I'm starting my training for my fall marathon in a few days! | |

"Couldn't ask for a better first marathon..." (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon - and I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first time. Much of the course was lined with great fan support and the bands were entertaining. I'd love to do it again next year... but get there early to beat traffic. It gets pretty packed!!! | |

"2002 better than 2001." (General Comments)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 The finish area was more spacious than last year. The walk to the parking area is easier than taking the shuttle. It wasn't a 30 min walk, as someone else mentioned...10 min tops. It was only a 1/4 mile, with the Marines showing off their equipment on the way, cool. The course is not bad, just run on the shoulder of the freeway to avoid the slope of the road. The support was great. A volunteer quickly helped me stretch when my hamstring cramped right near the end. The bands were fine, there were around 26 stages. I think the 40 bands comes from multiple bands per stage. The bands are never going to feel too plentiful because you run by them quickly then they're gone. Wear headphones if you have to have continuous music. That was my second RNR Marathon. I'd do it again. | |

"Great fans & volunteers, terrible sidehill course" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This race was not a bad experience, other than the horrible sidehills on various roads. I tried running on the grass, sand, or sidewalk to avoid the brutal angle of the streets. Lots of fans and excellent water/Gatorade stops. Thanks for using a good sports drink this time! More port-o-potties would be helpful so the women wouldn't need to squat behind cars. One more water stop at 25.5 miles or so would help us in the heat at the end. How about getting the traffic flowing out of the finish area parking lot? We walked 1.5 miles after the race to the downtown bound buses, which I didn't mind, but then we waited on the bus for an hour trying to get out of the lot. If the start and finish areas must remain the same, at least the rest of the course should be totally redone. The first five miles were downhill, but the rest of the race was sidehill/uphill. I've done 3 different marathons and this was by far the toughest. Thanks to the people with water hoses and pitchers for keeping us cool and wet. Excellent expo at the Convention Center. | |

"Good Race but Disappointing Show" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 The course was good if you were in the lead packs but somewhat dangerous running in large groups. Much of the course was angled and pitted resulting in the potential for falls. They reported 40 bands but I didn't see more than 6 bands actually playing during the entire race. Good support team and overall fun, stress-free environment. Would do the race again... |
