"Scenic course, some organizational issues" (about: 2011)

| 1 Rehoboth Seashore Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 3 Pros: - Course is scenic, going through nice seaside towns, farmland, and woods. Part of the course is on park paths, part on residential roads. Very flat, and with cold weather it's good if you're looking for a fast time. - Day-of-race packet pickup available. - No hassle or long waits in the start area. - Easy to park close to start/finish area. - Not overcrowded. - Great well-stocked finish area with heated tent, varied selection of food, and good beer. Cons: - Course was short by about a quarter mile. Mile three was not measured correctly and it ended up being just under 26. Hopefully they'll resolve this for 2012. - Ran out of some shirt sizes before day-of-race pickup. - If you're into large crowds of cheering spectators, there aren't many, especially in the park areas. Those who were there were great. Overall, a good scenic small marathon, but needs to resolve some organizational issues.

"Beautiful course with lots of variety," (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Wonderful race made easy by lots of parking, and a varied course. Loved running on the rail trail the best, it was awesome. Only bad side of the race I noticed is that the food/beer was gone or practically gone before all the runners came in.

"Well-run quiet, flat cool-season marathon" (about: 2011)

| 1 Rehoboth Seashore Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I ran the RB Marathon this morning and here are my fresh thoughts on the race: COURSE: Miles 1-6: Wind through the town of Rehoboth Beach and the extreme southern part of the state park. The town is quite nice when you get away from the touristy main strip. Miles 7-10: Junction & Breakwater Trail. Loved it! Lots of half marathoners today and they cut back and returned on this trail to the finish. Miles 11-13.5: Into Lewes and a long stretch of highway to the Cape Henlopen SP. The race was run on the shoulder of the road; I had no problems with the crown of the road. My least favorite part of the race was crossing the bridge into Lewes; something about running on the metal grid bridge was unsettling. Personal problem, I know... Miles 13.5-17: Really nice stretch through the state park. Nice views of dunes, the bunkers, barracks, and other remnants of the war. Very scenic. Miles 17-22: Long boring stretch on Hwy 9 back into Lewes. Turned back onto Gills Neck Rd / 267 and it was better. Miles 22-25: Back onto the Junction & Breakwater Trail. The trail was my mental anchor helping me through the middle miles of the race. I love trail running and looked forward to these three miles. Miles 25-26.2: Fast finish into Rehoboth Beach, with decent crowd support at the end. ORGANIZATION & VOLUNTEERS: Top.Notch. Thanks everyone for all the hard work. POST-RACE: The tent at the finish was busy and warm. Plenty of food that looked like it might be tasty but I had no appetite. The massage was divine. At the Philadelphia Marathon 3 weeks prior, I had a 1/2 mile painful walk to my car. At Rehoboth Beach, it was less than 100 yards. Loved it. SUMMARY: Weather was perfect! It was mid-30s and cloudy at the start and climbed into the mid-40s with clear skies (oops, I forgot the shades). The breeze was stiff, especially in the unprotected areas, but I do not believe it negatively affected my time. After dealing with the massive crowds in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. this fall, the Rehoboth Beach Marathon was a very nice change of pace. Oh, and I scored a 19 minute PR and qualified for Marathon Maniacs. I'll be back.

"A must add December race" (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 First, the town is lovely and the people accommodating and welcoming. It is a summer beach town so when people come to town in Dec, the streets, shops and restaurants came alive. Well done. The race course is very flat and if you want a PR to wrap the year or try for Boston, this may be the race. The weather can be iffy and count on cold wind (as you would any beach venue). Wind today out of north so when heading up the coast, there were some personally challenging stretches but that is just fine. Very little fans along the way and some very long, lonely stretches. Nice to see some local kids out cheering runners on in spots (even though they were Steelers fans! :) There were several miles of non-pavement but it was packed gravel and fine to keep your pace. Roads were not closed to traffic but kudos to the locals and police for keeping runners safe and without the need to stop. Parts of course had return runners coming back at you and the road or trail got very narrow. Again, not a huge race so not a big problem but it is something to note. Although small race, the cost was high enough to allow for a gel or protein/carb bar handout among the way. Organization was excellent as registration, start, and finish were well done (good food and beer if you want at the end!). No corrals but semi-organized by pace time. No worries of course with a small race and chip-timing but just don't look for your corral as there aren't any. Results posted at venue fast but not online fast enough in my opinion. Don't go expecting Boston or NY marathon but you should go for a well run, mid-December race in a wonderful setting and fast as lighting course. See you next year!

"Great little town, great race" (about: 2010)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 It's all been said above, but this was a great course and a great environment. Hotel overlooked the start, race temps were in the low 30's to start, and there was no wind and a flat course. Would love to come back to Rehoboth in the summer, but it's a charming little town.

"Great mix of road, trail, and countryside" (about: 2010)

| 1 Rehoboth Seashore Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Really loved this race - a pleasant surprise. We drove out from DC on a whim, having done Marine Corps six weeks before. Despite a very limited "expo" (really, let's just call it a packet pick-up) everything else was well run. The course starts in town, with a quick out-and-back along the shore - great for a winter sunrise. By the 10K point you hit a rail trail (mercifully dry)... and the field really thins out. This is a fast race - no weaving in and out like MCM. By 9 miles in, the course takes an odd zigzag through a new McMansion development, but then heads to and through Lewes. The worst part of the course was just past the Cape May Ferry terminal - a dull stretch covering miles 12-18, twisting through a desolate state park. From there it was back through Lewes, backtracking over the rail trail and into town. Pros: - Great support. Lots of water/Gatorade, plus a few GU stations. - Minimal crowding. - A runner's race. Plenty of first-timers, but mostly seasoned, relaxed folks. - Great, post-race, heated tent. Loved the pancakes. Loved the microbrew more. Cons: - That Cape Henlopen State Park loop. Argh. More twists and turns than tangled Christmas lights. - No Mile 24 marker. Sounds petty, but everything else was marked. I thought I'd really hit the wall- only to find myself at mile 25. I heard lots of complaints about this. I'd do it again- and a great late fall/early winter race for the Northeast crowd.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Really surprised at the mild weather (low 40's at finish, no wind) for December. Town has a lot of character. I highly recommend the Dogfish Head pub across from the host running store (choose it over the pasta dinner). Post-race was great, including lots of awesome 16-Mile beer. Fast course; I set a PR. Great experience.

"Great, Small Marathon with a Scenic Course" (about: 2010)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Rehoboth Seashore Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I thoroughly enjoyed this marathon for a number of reasons. First of all I walked out of my hotel at 6:50 a.m. for the 7 a.m. start. You can't do that at the mega marathons. Secondly the sunrise was magnificent with an array of beautiful colors over the Atlantic Ocean. I told runners throughout the day that today's weather was perfect. Cold, almost no wind, and partly sunny. I met some grizzled veteran runners during the race: Hal who was running marathon #65 and has 19 straight Boston Marathons (he ran this years' Boston with a cast on his arm after falling on black ice, training for Boston). Also I met Keith (AKA Pink Tutu Runner) who has run over 100 marathons and ultra marathons. Plus I met newer marathoners who were working hard to finish their 3rd marathon ever. My conclusion: You meet a lot of wonderful people at races. I cannot say enough good things about the staff who put on this race. The after party in the big tent next to the finish lasted for hours afterward and never ran out of food or beverages. The Marathon Maniacs and 50 States groups were well represented at this race. Thank you to all who put on such a great race, and to those who participated as well. I highly recommend this race!!!

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Previous comments cover many positive aspects. Word will quickly spread about how fantastic it is. I just wanted to add that this is a great one for marathoners who want to meet up with other marathoners BEFORE (at the pasta dinner), DURING the event (small-size cap makes it easy to find each other at the beautiful sunrise start, and easy to hang/run with one another during) and AFTER (at the fabulous, well-stocked, finish-line party). -Could easily be a PR course, plus much is off vehicle-traveled roadways. -Aid stations were stocked and set-up exactly where advertised, with enthusiastic volunteers. -Bonus door-prize gift baskets for various feats (not just for the fastest folks).

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This race is well done. Everything from packet pick-up to the finish line is first class. The course has just enough variation to keep your mind off of the miles run. The food and beer in this town are also first-class. |
