Let me start that by saying two things. First, I did get a PR; and second, of my nine previous marathons, I haven't given too many poor comments. I understand that the logistic of putting on such an event most be huge. Having said that, I was by no means impressed by this one. The overall organization was fine. Nice expo, and the race and water stations were more than smooth. I was not a fan of the constant switch backs, nor the so called "scenery" of Detroit. The post-race area would rank as the worst of all my races. Water and a bad of chips, liquid yogurt, and an apple. That's it. Nothing else. Detroit, you're better than this. The medal was very heavy and nice. So all in all, not great, but not horrible.

"Beautiful course" (about: 2007)

First time in Detroit and enjoyed it. Very pretty course with run over bridge and along river in both US and Canada. Belle Island was also very scenic. Not sure this is a 'PR' course with bridge and tunnel climbs, and fairly strong winds along river and island, but overall I thought it was a good, challenging course. One change I'd recommend is to have a more traditional pasta dinner at the expo. Pasta dinner in the hotel restaurant didn't feel right - a little too nice & hard to connect with other runners.

Wonderful spectators. Everyone got into the spirit of this event, from the border guards and police officers to the neighborhood folks who lined the streets up with goodies, encouragement and good cheer. Thank you to the three lovely elderly ladies, passed Mexican town, for the cheer leading dance. The music along the course was phenomenal: the best of Motown.

One complaint: the race was scheduled on the same day as a big 1:00pm football game; so parking and the drive was a bit hard.

"Pretty Good!" (about: 2007)

This was my first marathon, but I ran the Detroit 1/2 last year.
The course was mostly flat, except running over the Bridge (1% incline), and coming out of the Windsor/Detroit Tunnel.
Pros: There were plenty of water and Gatorade stations, as well as stations handing out gels, M&M's, pretzels and hard candy. Running over the Bridge as the sun came out was beautiful to see.
Cons: no Gatorade at the finish line?! I only found water.
Other: I didn't like the people standing at mile markers yelling out split times, b/c i don't like hearing my times (but that's just my own personal complaint, I'm sure some people want to hear splits). Also, some officials let spectators cross the street when there were gaps between the racers, but more than once i almost ran into the spectators crossing. I guess they thought i was running slower than it looked.
Overall it was a good marathon, some first-timers might not like the inclines that occur a couple times on the course.

"Great event - well organized" (about: 2007)

Loved the race, very well organized. Loved that the race start was organized by finish time.
Would have like one additional water station on the Canadian side - it was a long haul from the last one before the bridge and the one water station in Windsor.

Hated the tunnel - it was like running in a sauna that never ends - very hot, humid, no air flow

But everything else was wonderful.

"Great time in Motown" (about: 2007)

I may be a bit jaded, since I PR'ed for the first time in 8 years, but I can't think of a bad thing to write about the Detroit Marathon. The international crossings were unique and fun (yes, the tunnel was humid, but there was a nice breeze waiting at the exit). The crowd was strong through much of the course, and the fluid stations were all well-manned and stocked. The expo was large but efficient (unlike Vegas). And the weather was unseasonably warm, with a few head-winds, but most people seem to have been prepared for that.

Overall, Detroit was an awesome experience.

The course is very good, with the bridge and tunnel. The expo has gone down since I started running this race 6 years ago. Goodie bag ? Nothing in it. And what happened to the marathon merchandise? It's all by New Balance now ? The other company was much better. This is the first year I did not buy anything. And not enough porta potties at the start - need them on the 1/2 marathon side too. Finish line was a bit confusing after crossing. All I could see was water. Was there any fruit ?

"Awesome" (about: 2007)

The 2007 Detroit Marathon was awesome. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, which was about two blocks from the start line. Spectators were outstanding with support throughout the race. The best was crossing the border and having the border patrol cheering you on. Water stations were every two miles except the last 5-6 miles when there were more. Weather was great! Can't go wrong with this race.

"YEAH Detroit!!!" (about: 2007)

I have ran 16 marathons, 5 of these in Detroit. Each year Detroit puts on a better and better marathon. This year was outstanding! Everything from a world class expo, to start corrals based on estimated finish time, to 20 drink stations with plenty of water and Gatorade. Thank you Detroit Marathon staff and volunteers for showcasing our city in such a good light!!

Thanks also to Windsor. Windsor does a great job of hosting a portion of the marathon in their wonderful city. We had the pleasure of running over the Ambassador Bridge to Canada and returning through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel back into Detroit.

The crowd this year was terrific. There were a large number of spectators to cheer us on at the start, at the exit from the tunnel, enter/exit from Bella Isle and many, many at the finish. Thanks to all the people of Detroit, and surrounding areas, for coming out and making it a wonderful day. Thanks especially to the people of Indian Village. You guys rock! M&Ms...what a wonder surprise when you are feeling like crap!

I have run marathons all over the world. I highly recommend Detroit to all runners out there who are looking for a great marathon to run. Detroit gets lots of bad press, ignore all that because good things can happen in Detroit. This marathon is a prefect example. YEAH Detroit!
