"Great marathon to race - once." (about: 2008)

The course was amazing, and the spectators were great. Walking nearly a mile to meet up with my friends after enduring 26.2 miles on my feet was not my idea of a good time. Forty years ago we put a man on the moon, yet the wait to get on the train was nearly an hour. I would recommend that out-of-towners book their hotel as close to the finishing area as possible. If you don't mind the massive congestion at the finish area, this is one of the most beautiful courses in the United States.

Everything about the marathon was great. I only have one complaint, and that pertains to the finishing area. It appeared to be the case that family members were taking some of the food and beverages at the end that were meant for the runners. It was SO crowded, and getting out of the area was hard because of the solid wall of people that I followed for about half a mile before the congestion died down. The families and spectators should be kept out of the finishing area!

"Mega-marathon; mega-mess at the end" (about: 2008)

This race is all its hyped up to be - huge, memorable, and pretty, with nice weather, cute Marines, a giant expo, and great organization at the water stations. The 3 issues I had with this race are all due to its size, so if you can forgive them these items, then go for it!

1) The price: when it's all said and done, it's $115 to run this race. Can you really consume $115 worth of PowerAde in the hours that you are on the course? Do you want a finisher's shirt? Well, you need to pay for that too - SEPARATELY. It's not included in the $115 you already paid.

2) Post-race food. I ran a 5:10 there, so maybe it's my own fault for being so slow, but my post-race food was a 3-ounce box of Sun Maid raisins. That's IT.

3) The family meet-up area was AT LEAST 1 mile from the finish. Don't plan to meet your family at Iwo Jima. The place is a mass of humanity. Completely obscene. I asked a police officer where the family meet-up area was, and then I laughed when he showed me a skyscraper in the distance. Sadly, he wasn't joking. It was at least a 25-minute walk from the finish area.

I paid my money and did the race, but for me and mega marathons, it's ONE AND DONE. Great experience - ONCE.

"I'm running again and bringing my friends to run." (about: 2008)

Organization was superb, and from packet pick up to recovering my gear bag at the end, everything was well done. I must disagree with those who complained about packing up water stations at the end. I'm a solid back-of-the-pack runner, and finished in 6:18 - that's hours and minutes, not a minutes-per-mile pace. Yes, water stations were being packed up and cleaned up, but the Marines at the water stations at miles 22, 24, and 25 were just as enthusiastic as the Marines at the water stations 1, 2, and 3. Receiving the finisher's medal from one of the Marines was the highlight of my race. My favorite part was the Marine gunnery sergeant at mile 17 ribbing some runners - "I can't BELIEVE you're walking on my course!"

I did the Marine Corps Marathon in 2007. My wife was able to take the metro to the halfway point to meet me and then take it back to the finish line. You would not have flexibility like that in New York. The start was great. Going into the city of Arlington, and seeing all of those people on top of an overpass was great! Going past the Washington Monument and the capitol was beautiful. I'd like to thank those armed service people who volunteered; thank you for making it possible.

"An outstanding and must-run event." (about: 2007)

I ran the MCM in 2007 as my second marathon. I've heard from many marathoners that the MCM is a must-run event, so I tried it. Outstanding choice. The setting and entire race for me was very emotional and patriotic (coming from a military involved family). Having our courageous marines at each water station was inspiring and energetic... a nice touch when the pain sets in. A little hilly at the start, but flat most of the way. Large numbers of fans throughout, especially miles 18-23, when most folks hit "the wall." This stage of the race (18-23) was the most memorable part of the event. The excited fans pump you up. I'm planning to revisit the course again in 2009.

Have fun and run the MCM.

"Best Race Yet" (about: 2008)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Marine Corps Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

This was my 4th marathon. I will absolutely consider this one the best, including course, fans and organization. The lines at the expo were not long it was well organized to accommodate the lines they expected. The course, although hillier than I expected, was worth it. The areas we ran were the best in DC, including Georgetown and the National Mall. And the best part of it all was having the Marines along the entirety of the course, as well as at the end giving us our medals. My only complaint with the entire marathon was the placement of the family meeting area. It was quite a walk from the finish line and located on a sloped concrete pad - not the most comfortable place after you have completed a 26.2. Although this was not by best time, it was definitely my best race.

"Very Exciting Run" (about: 2008)

My first MCM. I was very excited to see so many runners. The start was fast paced and flowed very smoothly. The organization was incredible for so many runners. Hats off to UPS! My only complaint is that at the end of the race, the spectators kept creeping in on the water stops looking for their runners that it bottle-necked the course. Otherwise, I hope to run again next year!

Simply put, the MCM is AWESOME. The Marines can really put on a good show. This is my 8th running of the MCM, and each time has been filled with excitement. For any marathoner, starting out or seasoned, I highly recommend you put this on your calendar - you will not be disappointed.

What an amazing experience running through the streets of Washington. There is so much history and American spirit. Hundreds of thousands of people come out to support this marathon. Everyone should experience this amazing feeling. I ran this marathon in honor of my brother who died in Iraq in February of 2007.
