"Fun race, but deceivingly tough hills" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I must say that I have never seen such short porta-pottie lines before a marathon. I never waited more then 5 minutes, there were tons of them! I have run Chicago, Boston and New York and have found that to be my biggest complaint at the start of all of them except this one. There was a bit of a wait when I went to get my race packet (Saturday morning) due to only two security people handing/searching everyone who had to come in. After getting past that it was smooth sailing. Race was fun, but the hills can really beat up your legs if you don't watch yourself in the beginning. I suffered the last 11 miles because of it. The winds were tough and I found my self alone a lot of the time for people trying to run around or near sub 3 hours. I'll try it again next year and hope for a better experience with the hills. | |

"Great first marathon! I can't wait for 2008!" (about: 2007)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This was my first full marathon and it was amazing!!! The course was great and the spectators really supported everyone out there. My only gripe was at the finish line. It took nearly 1/2 an hour after crossing to get to the baggage and family areas. It was a dead stop! Otherwise perfect. I can't wait to run it again next year! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This marathon was a load of fun, and despite it's billing as 'The People's Marathon' and embracing of novice runners, MC is a great experience for seasoned runners as well. The course, which I guess was a little different this year, had some great hills early on. The scenery was pretty cool throughout, and though there were a few spots with no spectators (bridges, Hains Point out and back), most of the way there were lots of cheering crowds. Getting water, Powerade and support from the Marines was fun and inspiring. Crossing the 20 mile mark on the bridge back into Virginia helped define that all-important split point in the race and the crowds in Crystal City were unexpected and fantastic. The hill from mile 25 to the finish was expected, but that didn't make it any easier. The last steep bit up to the Iwo Jima Memorial, however, was painless. Yes, the Metro was crowded, but manageable. The expo was just all right, but that's not why we run. All said, this was a really great race. | |

"2 Matathons in 2 Days" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The Marines were the best. Running near the historical sites was a lot of fun for a first-time visitor to the DC area. The hills at the beginning were expected since they were shown on the course map. I do not like the bigger marathons because they are crowded, but this one was too special to pass up. I ran the Ridge to Bridge marathon the day before in North Carolina, and by the time my plane arrived in Washington, I did not have enough time to get my packet, but my friends were able to get it for me. Considering the sheer number or runners, this was a very well organized race. Plenty of fluids at each aid station. The last two tenths of a mile were up a hill and ended very close to the Iwo Jima monument, but what an awesome challenge to charge up that hill at the end, especially after running a marathon the day before. Excellent finisher's medal. | |

"Don't Follow the 3:30 Pace Setter!" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 After speaking with the 3:30 pace setter before the race and him telling everyone that he was going to start off slow, I was fairly confident in him. Big mistake! This guy shot off at the gun and left most of his group behind. I ended up running 15 seconds faster per mile than pace for the first 5 miles on those hills, and still couldn't even see him up ahead. The rest of the group was cursing him by mile 3. It didn't help that the mile markers for the first few miles were way off. I appreciate the job these pace leaders try to do, but if you can't do it, don't ruin the race for others who are relying on you. Great race otherwise, though the Rosslyn Metro after the race was ridiculous. I took a cab back my hotel instead. | |

"MCM is definitely one of the best marathons" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is my 7th MCM, and I definitely have to say that this is one marathon event that every marathoner should run. From the expo to the finish line, the marines have proven once again that the MCM is definitely a Class A event. The only part that threw me for a loop this year was the finish - expecting to take the left heading towards the finish line, we ended up going towards Rosslyn and looping back. This part, the last 1.2 miles, really tested my mental toughness. But, all in all, great event. For those who have not run this, you need to add this to your fall event schedule. See you next year! | |

"Great Run, Poor Finish Area" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 The course was great. A bit tight at many of the water stations. Could of used a hill or two to break up the flat areas of the run (I train on hills.) The run up to the memorial was not an issue, but the crowd at the end to get water (and get out) was a problem. Also no bagels when I got there (4h 19m) And the bus back to Crystal City was a disaster. We took a bus to another station and then took the metro back to Crystal City. We beat a friend who decided to wait for the bus. (A 65 minute wait for a bus) Also party at Crystal City was non-existent after the race ended. Maybe 300 people there for the Spin Doctors concert. But I had a great time overall and hope to be back for 2008. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon and I absolutely loved it. The course had more hills then I had anticipated in the first 9 miles but they were a nice challenge. I have done a few 1/2 marathons and I thought for the number of people in this race, the marines did a spectacular job. Oohrah and semper fi to the MANY marines and volunteers who supported this year's event. |
