COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I have run NYC seven times, initially in 1991 and for the last six years as a member of Fred's Team (named in honor of the late Fred Lebow, former president of the NYRRC), raising funds for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. I will do so again this November. The course is quite challenging but the huge crowds of spectators provide a tremendous psychological boost to the runners. Enjoy the experience! Go Fred's Team! | |

"Most Exciting Marathon; Changed My Life" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 In the summer of 2003, I knew a few friends that told me someone always backs out the last minute of the NYC Marathon, so that I should train for it anyway. So someone did drop out, and I ran under someone else's name. In November 2003, it was the 3rd NYC Marathon I ran, but I was in the best shape of my life, sometimes exceeding 90 miles/week. I ran an unofficial time of 2:43, averaging 6:18/mile. The whole race felt like I wasn't even running fast because of the excitement! To this day, I haven't been able to relive those glory days, but I'll get back to that again! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran the New York City Marathon for the first time in 2006 and I can not wait to run it again in 2007. It was an incredible experience. Contrary to to some of the negative comments posted about the organization of this race, I thought that the marathon was extremely well organized. Yes, it is a little cold at the start, but wear layers, bring a sleeping bag, and savor the experience. True, the wait at the beginning is long, but there really is no other way to get 37,000+ individuals from one island to another when one considers the logistics of closing 5 bridges, etc. I am not a fast runner at all, but I felt like a champion on this day. At every point along the course there were individuals of all races, ethnicities, socioeconomic classes, etc. cheering you on. I live in New York City and this is one day where the city feels like a small town. It was well over 5 hours by the time I arrived at the last 3 miles of the course and there were still huge crowds out, cheering me on. Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue is VERY DIFFICULT. I went out to dinner that evening with my medal around my neck and received cheers and a standing ovation from a restaurant full of cynical, jaded New Yorkers. This was truly one of life's greatest experiences. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 There is only one NYC! It's an incredibly scenic course and an example to the world on how a marathon is organized. I wish they would increase the number of participants. Why not let all 90,000 applicants run? For those in NY, join NYRR before January 31, 2008, run the 9 NYRR-scored, qualifying races and get guaranteed entry for the 2009 race. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Came all the way from New Zealand for it. Was by far the best event I have ever been part of. The crowds are amazing - they really lift you! The chance to run through all five boroughs is awesome. The course is tough and a lot of the roads have their share of potholes, but this is one not too be missed. Will be back this year! | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 5 I know you're supposed to love this marathon, but I didn't. Here's the rant: Start: the bus ride was unnecessarily stuck in long traffic? When were the roads closed? Even our driver was upset. And, please, someone educate all the foreigners about waiting their turn. They cut in line getting on the buses and at the starting line for coffee and bagels which, being a polite person, I was not able to access. I had planned on eating at the starting line - don't. Bathrooms were also nearly impossible to access. People were peeing everywhere! You can bet Lance didn't put up with the starting line that the teeming masses had to put up with. Once the race started, people were discarding clothing in the middle of the road creating tripping hazards galore. The crowds never thinned out and runners were less than polite shoving etc. Ok, so the big deal is running through all 5 boroughs, well, I'm from CA and don't know the bronx from queens. In contrast, Chicago was very ethnic-you knew when you were in the Chinese,Jewish, Mexican etc neighborhoods because spectators were proudly displaying their heritage/culture. CHICAGO IS MUCH BETTER The finish was a fiasco! IT WAS ONE HOUR OF WALKING BY THE TIME I NEGOTIATED THE MANDATORY (UNLESS YOU WANT TO BUY YOUR CHIP AND DON'T WANT YOUR SWEATS) MAZE. I have never been so cold and miserable! The positives: NY was great fun; I wasn't at all sore probably all the walking in the finish line chute combines with the fact that I couldn't run as fast as I wanted to due to the crowds. Bye! | |

"Amazing Experience; Incredible Crowd Support!" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Best part of the race: The crowds and the amazing NYC views. Each borough was like entering a new race. The feeling of support was overwhelming. Got my PR, even better than my Chicago Marathons, which is a MUCH flatter and faster course. Worst part of the race: Waiting for 4 hours in the cold on Staten Island before the start of race - not exaggerating a bit. You can't read because it's too dark out. You can't bring your iPod unless you aren't worried about ever getting it back from the UPS truck (your bag drop off). All in all, an INCREDIBLE experience, but hope you've done your homework on the course and the bridges, or you're in for a surprise! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Wow- what a great race! My first NYC. Terrific fall weather. Amazing energy from the crowd. And you get to run all 5 boroughs of The Big Apple. Amazing to see the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn/Queens. Organization was great although the long corral lines at the end was sort of frustrating because I was cold and tired... didn't want to walk another quarter mile to exit the park. One note: It's not exactly an easy race - all those bridges, in addition to the hills of Central Park and the incline of 5th Avenue take their toll if you are not prepared for the course. Great organization from ING/NYRR. Oh, one more thing: nice medal. | |

"Disappointing" (about: 2006)

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 5 Other than running in a great city and being very international, I found this race very disappointing. First, at the expo, they only had small shirts available when I got there. Don't you put your size on the app? Waiting around freezing for hours on the island before the start was awful. It was so crowded and never opened up until mile 17. If you didn't look down, you could trip and slip on the clothes, banana peels and sponges people had thrown down in front of them instead of to the side of the road. I have never been elbowed and pushed out of the way so much as I have in this race. I have run Chicago, Dallas, White Rock and Marine Corps. So I have run big races. The end of the race we had to walk through long corrals just to find a place to sit down. The spectators were great and running through all 5 boroughs was cool. Overall I will never run this race again or recommend it. | |
