"Big improvement over previous years" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This was my ninth marathon. The start was very nice and uplifting - fireworks!! Good crowd support, plenty of aid stations, hilarious Dolly Parton Look Alikes, bands and lots of encouraging signs along the course. Good event, just a few things could still be improved. Still need more food at the finish, and need to order size small jackets, sweatshirts, etc.

"Great urban course w/ great support." (General Comments)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is a really beautiful urban course that winds through down town Dallas and then it's' older neighborhoods until you get to White Rock Lake. After a 9 mile spin around the lake, you head back to the downtown area. The hills at mile 19 are gradual, but they get your attention especially if you have any propensity towards leg cramps...as many runners seemed to have. Great on-course entertainment if your into that stuff and great water and nutrition stations throughout the entire race course. Some of the residents even put out tables of goodies for the runners. I prefer smaller fields in simpler environments, but this is definitely a great and very comfortable race.

"First-class marathon" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The White Rock marathon has everything: fireworks, music, spectators, scenic course. It is not, however, the best place to achieve a PR. There are some hills. No one I talked to was able to achieve their desired time. Many improvements were made over the 2001 race.

"great race" (General Comments)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran the Rock Relay, and split it with a friend, so we each ran a 1/2. White Rock is an excellent race. The aide stations are wonderfully spaced, well stocked and packed with spectators. The race started and ended outside the American Airlines center. so people were able to use the facilities. and it was great because this morning was a particularly cold day in Dallas. I will be back to this race again to run the marathon. Thanks Dallas.

"Excellent Management, Beautiful work" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This was my third run with Whiterock. It has been better every time. A lot of greatwork by the volunteers. Well managed. The past dinner was great. One point for improvement, probably the parking fee should be included with the entry fee as it is hard to remember to take any money to the marathon. I would rate this one at -A. It could have been an A but as I stated before parking fees and the short sleeve finisher's shirt could be and should be changed.

"Outstanding!!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Very well organized. Expo was outstanding-speakers very helpful for a newcomer. Course was challenging without being daunting, late hills were a killer though. Lots of spectators and support with ample water, ade, gel, fruit, etc. Kudos to organizers for reading past complaints and fixing problems.

"Just completed the 2002 White Rock Marathon" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Wow! Beautiful weather (maybe a little on the warm side), Great organization (organizers listened to last years complaints and made substantial positive changes), who can complain about the sceanary around White Rock Lake? My only issue with this run is those darn Dolly Parton hills that seem to bite you hard after the relatively flat 1st half of the race. This was my second White Rock run and I will be back next year! Good job Dallas!

"a HUGE step forward for the Rock" (General Comments)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Great race!! Much better organization and a lot more fun than prior races. Fan participation increased. The many bands on the course really helped as well. Weather....perfect. Folks from up north should really keep their eyes on this race. Dallas is a great destination and we now have a great late fall marathon. All we need now is a corporate sponsor who wants naming rights so we can get more cash behind this race. Kudos to all involved!

"Great race for Big D" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I have run 6 marathons including San Diego & Marine Corps, The race organization at the Rock beats them all. Friendly volunteers help you find plenty of food. Dallas can't compete with the scenery of some races but has a great course. The crowds are the best at the Marine Corps but this is a great race which I'll run again!

"A Model for other Marathons!" (General Comments)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I have run 7 marathons, big & small, including San Diego & Marine Corps, The post-race organization at White Rock beats them all. Great food and plenty of it, friendly volunteers, big signs to direct you when you're really tired, and beer! A few modifications, like opening up the entire American Airlines Center before and after the race for comfort, and this would be perfect. Thanks for a great race! |
