COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Out of all my marathons (Vancouver, San Francisco, Sahara, Rwanda, Victoria, Marine Corps), this was easily the best in terms of the actual course and crowd support. The crowd is awesome; it's called the 'friendliest' for a reason. And the course itself is wonderful--a very beautiful run through trees and along a river. The autumn weather was perfect. I PRed on this course, and I look forward to running it again. And there's lots of fun stuff in Richmond, too! The people are friendly, and there are plenty of great post-race walking areas in the city. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Loved the whole experience. Though this is my first marathon, based on everything I have read as problems in other marathons, almost every aspect of this race was perfect. Their enthusiasm, energy, organization and expertise were incredible. The one and only little complaint: having been used to running long runs on bike trails, the 26 miles of concrete-based highway killed my back. Not much anyone could do about that. Other than that the course was great. Even had a member of the local running club biking beside me for the last 6 miles talking me through my misery ;-). Thanks to everyone involved. | |

"Excellant Marathon Experience" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This is a great marathon experience for me. The expo is fantastic as they have many difference vendors. I'm grateful as I picked up a pair of CW-X running pants, which are unavailable in Singapore. There are also numerous pieces of marathon merchandise and I especially like their Brooks jacket. Also, runners are given a marathon glass on top of a long-sleeve t-shirt as part of the souvenir package, and both were GREAT! On top of that, runners can also sign up to take a free tour of the marathnon route! This helped me prepare mentally for the marathon. The marathon was brilliant. Weather was just about right. There were enough drinks along the way. Plus Pepsi and cookies at 2 of the stations! Thta was really motivating for me. : ) Crowd support was great too, although it would be even better if they have sufficient food and sports drinks at the end. The finisher medal give me enough energy to walk back to my hotel. This is a marathon that's worth running again. It fits the Runners' World report as the American's Friendliest Marathon! Keep it up! And thank you everyone in Richmond, Virginia. | |

"okay but wouldn't do it again" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I think the course leaves something to be desired - while there were some very pretty areas when we were running through neighborhoods and forested areas, I remember running alongside traffic in sort of rundown-looking areas most of the time. I understand why they only close off half the street and have traffic right next to you, I just don't like it. I also have to say the roads are VERY cambered so most of the time you are on a slant (really aggravated my IT band) with nowhere else to go. The hills were fine - I've seen worse. I didn't see very many bands and spectators were few and far between. | |

"Lack of port-a-potties" (about: 2005)
First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Great race. However, at the start of the race their were a number of toilets. However, there were many spectators and it took me 12 minutes to be able to use one and I was almost late for the race. However, the bigger problem by far was the lack of them on the race course. I stopped four times and had to wait in line at each one costing me 12 minutes. Three or four at a location is not enough. | |

"Fantastic marathon experience" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 My first Richmond Marathon was in 2003. I liked it so much I came back in 2005 expecting much the same as I did two years ago, but I've got to say this one was better. The weather was ideal, the course excellent, amenities very good, expo wonderful, and organization that was about as good as you can get. I suppose you can't give the race organizers credit for the good weather in that part of the country in November, but you can give them credit for everything else. The course is mostly gently rolling, with only two short hills of any significance, and a nice downhill finish. It was definitely to my liking; two times there and two PRs. The biggest difference to me between the two races was that this one seemed to have much more spectator support. It's not overwhelming at most parts of the course, but good enough to keep you going. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 I was reading the previous comments and began to wonder if I had run the same route as the others had. I don't even know where to start. Agree with the other comments about the aid stations. I actually had small ice cubes, about the size that won't go down without some chewing, in a cup of Powerade given to me. Luckily, I had pinched the cup together so I didn't get any in my mouth. Just about every station I had to fight to get the cup away from the person handing it to me. Race directors: Train the people at the aid stations. The course was hilly. Missed the advertised monster at mile 17. But definitely found the hill at the end of the race. I couldn't find the food at the end of the race; I guess I didn't walk far enough. The expo needs to be bigger so that people can get a around without bumping into each other. It was cool to run along the Jamestown River. Don't think I will be back. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Although I did not run as well as I wanted, I do not hold the race responsible. The coverage was fantastic. Plenty of support before, during, and after the race. I really like the mix of flat and hills and especially like the downhill finish. I would recommend this to all marathoners!! | |

"A great marathon" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was a great marathon. I had my doubts due to other's opinions but I had a great time. The weather was awesome this year which probably helped a lot! It was 40 to start but quickly warmed up and minimal wind which really helped on the infamous Lee Bridge which was a piece of cake. I had listened to those who said it was a very large hill. I had no problem with it. There were only 3 hills and not even that big. The spectators were awesome, the course was very scenic and the post-race food and drinks were plentiful! The downhill finish was incredible. I would do this one again! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I thoroughly enjoyed the race. The aid stations were plentiful, well stocked and lots of porta-potties! My family enjoyed the party stations & it seemed that there were very few spots without cheering fans. Though the course had some inclines, I enjoyed the varied scenery... from running along the James, to neighborhoods, to downtown. Thanks, Richmond, for a great experience. I definitely plan to return! |
