"PERFECT DAY FOR A RACE" (about: 2007)

From last year's comments, I had very low expectations. I felt the course was very well marked. Except for being packed like sardines with the 1/2 marathoners through the waterfront condo area, the course was great....

"Pleasant little race" (about: 2007)

This was my second Buffalo Marathon. I enjoyed this race very much. I thought the new course was better. There isn't much crowd support. Usually there wasn't any. However, the pockets of the course that did have support really helped out the runners. Traffic support was a lot better this year than two years ago. The police along with the volunteers really seemed to take their task seriously and were very nice when we ran by.

Pick-up for the race packet was also improved. It seemed more streamlined and efficient. The expo is still pretty small. Not too much to see there. One thing that I didn't care for was the lack of food and drink at the finish line. Two years ago there were fruit drinks, bananas, and crackers at the finish line. This year there wasn't anything except water. Even then we had to hunt for it and found it under a table in the back of the finish area. I wish that next year there would be some bananas or something for finishers. I live locally so I only had a ten-minute car ride home to re-fuel. I didn't bother going into the convention center because a few years ago there wasn't anything left when I got there. I finish races anywhere between 4 and 4 1/2 hours. I felt bad for the people who came from out of town. Speaking of which, I ran for a few miles with a very nice woman from Maryland. So I just wanted to say, "Thank you" to her for making the miles go by easily.

Overall, this is a nice race. I'd like to see a larger expo and more support at the finish line but for the small entrance fee you can't complain much. I'll definitely run this again next year.

Ran the half. I liked the new course. We didn't have to bus it to the start, and the host hotel was great, as were the start and finish. I will be back in 2008.

"Very Sweet!!!!" (about: 2007)

This was my first and definitely not my last Buffalo event. I ran the half marathon and would like to say, "Thank you for a well done job." First the positives: A well thought-out, fast course, nice scenery, good size field, nice awards, excellent pasta party and post-race party, nice size expo for a smaller race, and local folks who were out along the course. Overall, an excellent event. My only negatives are: Two of the mile marks missing in the first six miles, and one or two of the marks may have been off a bit. But that is easily fixable. I could ramble on here but I think I said it best when I said, "THANK YOU for a wonderful weekend!!!!"

"Great course; lousy mile markers" (about: 2007)

The first 5 or 6 mile markers seemed to be way off, which made it difficult to judge pace. The course itself was great. The first half travels along an interesting, old, industrial waterfront. The second half takes you through a scenic parks and some nice residential areas. The downtown start, finish and middle were great as well. I will definitely run this flat and scenic course again, but will remember to wear a watch that records distance and pace to avoid relying on the posted mile markers.

"Had a great weekend in Buffalo" (about: 2007)

We stayed at the Hyatt Hotel, which was minutes from the start and finish and offered a good deal for marathoners. The Hyatt also allowed me a late checkout. The race went by the hotel at the halfway point so it was easy for family support. The free pasta meal was a surprise and the atmosphere was great, as it was well attended with a DJ.

The course went through downtown Buffalo, by the lake, through parks, and by a golf course and affluent old neighbourhoods. It had a few hills but nothing too bad. The aid stations were well supplied and attended. Crowd support was strong in the expected areas. I enjoyed the course and found it very interesting to run. All turns and intersections were supervised. The early start at seven was ideal, as it got warm by the end of the race.

Congratulations to Buffalo for holding a successful marathon. I have never been to Buffalo before and enjoyed all aspects of my weekend. I enjoy marathons that provide a host hotel close to everything, taking many of the stresses out of your race.

"Getting there!" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 2 Buffalo Marathons

Based on comments from the 2006 event, 2007 was a marked improvement. The expo is not much more than a packet pickup, and very cramped, but the RD went out of his way to help me with a couple of things and was very accommodating. This race has very easy logistics: abundant parking near the start/finish; the host hotel is nearby; the moderate field size minimizes starting line hassles; and the after-party is right at the finish line. The course is relatively easy, and scenic. Other strong points include good traffic control, and good post-race food and drink including beer!

Areas for improvement: Move the porta-johns from in front of the start line; place the mile markers accurately (mile marker 3 was 1/4 mile off! How can so many races fail to get this simple thing right?); and a technical shirt would be nice, although I acknowledge that the race is a bargain and that may jack up the price. I would run this race again.

"fast course; no spectators" (about: 2007)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Buffalo Marathon

This is a very small marathon, with a fast course. The spectators that do show up are extremely quiet - I had to yell at them to get them to cheer. Delaware Park is very nice and I would suggest running the whole marathon in and around the park.

A trouble spot for me was that the marathon shut down after 5 hours; I ran in under 4 hours but felt extremely bad for the 100 or so runners who had no support on the course. I would suggest that if you can't stay open for 6 hours, don't organize the event.

"Change name to Buffalo Half Marathon" (about: 2007)

2 previous marathons | 1 Buffalo Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

Since there were almost 2 half marathoners/relay runners for every marathoner, maybe this is better off being a half marathon. First half of the course was nice, except for the logjam when all the half marathoners combine with marathoners on a 3-foot-wide bike path. Maybe a 15-minute head start for the marathoners would be a good idea? Course would be better off being a lakeside loop with different start times (maybe the half starts 1 hour later?); the party after would be better.

"A great, smaller race" (about: 2007)

This was my first time running a half-marathon, and I'm very glad I did it. I chose it because of the date, and the fact that I live in Buffalo. The course was beautiful and fast. The spectators, though lacking in numbers, were all enthusiastic. I'll definitely do it again next year!
