"Good, big race" (about: 2009)

This was my first truly large race. At completion, I think I prefer smaller races but not because of anything lacking in this race. It was done very well, great spectators, etc.

The hills I kept hearing about were really not that bad. It wasn't flat, but it wasn't that bad either.

The only thing I'd change is to add more porta=johns on the course! Waiting in line during a race on top of already having GI issues is sad! The 6:30 start time is early, but I can see why, given the potential for heat in May and the big-city roads.

A wonderful race but really tough course (if you live and train where there are no hills!). However, I enjoyed this marathon immensely. Great organization, HUGE expo, wonderful City... a fabulous marathon weekend.

"What an amazing race!" (about: 2009)

Wow, what a day! The Flying Pig was my first marathon and I know I am now spoiled for all other races. The course is rather hilly and challenging but runs through a lot of interesting parts of town. The organization is excellent; even a first-timer had no problems getting around and figuring out what to do. But what really sets Cincinnati apart from other races is the crowd support. There are aid stations everywhere and they are fantastic (they have a competition to be your favorite, and you get to vote at the end, so they all try to outdo each other for your entertainment), but the fans are what's most amazing. Everywhere on the course there were folks out yelling and cheering, and so many were giving out oranges and candy to help you through; these are just helpful Cincinnatians, not official volunteers. I wore my name on my shirt and everybody yelled for me. I felt like a rock star crossing the finish line, waving and smiling. There was no lack of support, even though it took me 5:43 to finish. Come to the Pig and be ruined for other marathons!

I want to thank the police and the many volunteers on the course - we cannot do the race without the support they give us. Everything was done great. It was a little confusing at the expo; I think they should have everything bundled together for pick-up. But I'll be back. Thanks again.

"Very pleased with the Pig" (about: 2009)

I really enjoyed this race. The course was fun, with the worst hills being early. The last part of the course was flat to downhill. Spectators were enthusiastic. The water stops were well run and staffed. I wish GU had been available in more than one spot.

My only two gripes are these. One is the need to police the start. I started with the 3:30 pace group and literally ran over two groups of walkers on the first turn. Secondly, escaping the finish area was tough. I'm a slow marathoner, with a finish time of 3:35. I finish with a large number of halfers who have shuffled or walked the race. I don't stop for food. All I want is to walk out. It took five minutes with all of the people standing and loading up on the food. Could it be widened or opened up?

Other than that, the race was outstanding.

"GREAT RACE, BUT COULD IMPROVE" (about: 2009)

11-50 previous marathons | 4-5 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 5

This is my favorite marathon in the 33 I have run since 2005, including Boston. The medal is absolutely the best and the fans, bands, volunteers, and crazy-costumed runners make it a genuinely fun experience. No doubt, all marathon runners should have the opportunity to run the Pig.

But it can improve.

1. Start the half-marathon at least 10 minutes after the full marathon. Period. Many other large marathons do this and it relieves the awful congestion at the start. Put the walkers at the back of each pack and announce loudly that they should walk no more than two-abreast. Walkers are great and they don't like to be told to move out of the way. A double start would help enormously.

2. The post-race food used to be outstanding but has deteriorated. Suggestion: package the food in a bag for each runner and hand it out right after the chip removal. Akron does this and it works well. That way, there is plenty for each runner.

3. Have bib numbers posted on a board outside the expo to eliminate long lines.

Wanting to improve is part of the journey towards excellence. I hope that the race directors continue on this journey.

Awesome! I've run Chicago, NYC, and Cleveland previously. Hands down, Cincinnati was the best. The race director greeted us when we walked into the expo and shook our hands at the finish line. They had more water, Gatorade, nutrition and porta-potties than I've ever seen. The enthusiastic GRUNTS (volunteers) were there to help with words of encouragement at every water stop. Bikes were roaming the course... especially miles 17-26. They were EVERYWHERE, watching the runners and responding if anyone looked even slightly distressed. My favorite water stop included volunteers holding up boxes of tissues for us! Wow. They called our names and where we're from at the finish line. Amazing for such a big race. I PRed despite the hills and my bronchitis! LOVE IT! Great job, Cincinnati.

I've run 21 marathons, including Grandma's, Chicago, Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Quad Cities, Madison, and Twin Cities; and when taking everything into consideration, this is the best. I'll be driving 425 miles again to do it again this year.

"Awesome Boston Qualifier" (about: 2008)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This race was an awesome Boston qualifier. The course kept my interest the entire race. I felt spoiled with water stops and clocks at every mile. The hills were minimal (especially after running the Equinox Marathon) and I could not tell the course was re-routed for the fire (a race director's nightmare - especial on a qualifying course), but they did a fabulous job. Excellent food at the finish too!
