COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The Flying Pig is a must-do marathon for everyone. It was a very well organized event. The course is fantastic (even with the hills), the spectators are terrific, water stops every mile were outstanding, people passing out oranges in a number of spots along the course were the best ever, they had great freebies (shirt, poster, gym bag, golf towel) and lots of food at the finish line, and the race officials were at the finish to shake the hands of every person as they crossed the finish line. I must say I was a little intimidated coming into the finish line as there were so many photographers taking pictures. I thought it was the paparazzi and somebody important must be running, but it was just all of us marathoners they were taking pictures of. The race officials deserve special recognition for rerouting the course at the last minute due to the house fire near Mile 22. I bet not many races would be organized enough to have been able to pull that off! We stayed at a hotel across the river in Kentucky. You don't even need a car, as there are walking bridges to get you over to the expo and marathon. There were lots of great restaurants and entertainment on both sides of the river. This is a great destination marathon to attend. If I ever have the opportunity to do this one again, I will. | |

"Never Worry About Water" (about: 2008)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This run is fun. This one has the most water stations of the four different places I have run. The mountain at mile 8 is tough. But there is a good view at the top, if you don't care too much about your time. Three bridges at the beginning are not too bad. It is fun to run over the rivers. Points to be aware for anyone want to run: 1) The starting point and finish point are at two different stadiums. I had a hard time finding my way back because I tried to backtrack the way coming in. 2) The gear checks are in the row of yellow school buses. I had a little bit of a hard time finding them before and after. Even one staff member could not point them out for me after the race. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Didn't know Cincy was built on hills! This was a first-rate, organized and supported race! I stayed at the HI 0.8 miles from the start, and they treated me like royalty. The bus to downtown stopped right at the door, and also went straight to the airport. Cincinnati cares about their marathon and runners, and it showed 100% good, old Southern hospitality. I will definitely spread the word on this great race. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The Pig has it all! This was my first swine run - I had a great time! My race time was bad, but I had so much fun - it was a blast! TOUGH hills, no doubt; they will punish you if you are not trained adequately. I got spanked. I had not trained for them, so that's my own fault. Too many marathons too close together. The City of Cincinnati is great. The support was superb. I have run 10 marathons - some big, some small - and this one has it all. I will run it again, but will be better trained for hills. Hats off to the grunts!! Hats off to the firefighters in our midst that day - thank God for them. Hats off to the mayor for the welcome across the finish line! And to the runner who asked if anyone else saw the snake - YES, yuck! | |

"Great Race - Tough Hills" (about: 2008)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I had a great time running my first marathon. Everything was very well organized. The number of water stations was excellent. The crowd support - except in the last few miles - was excellent. When you look at the course elevation map, it appears as if the course is all downhill in the second half. In reality, the course has rolling hills throughout, with some steep hills in the beginning. I don't think the course was intentionally designed to be hilly - that's just the lay of the land in Cincinnati. A couple areas for improvement: 1. Need more speakers farther back in the starting corrals. 2. I would put a sign on the gear drop buses as to their location after the race. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I flew all the way from Alaska to run this race, and had a blast. I was very impressed with the organization of the race and the efforts they made to adjust the race course after a fire forced a detour around Mile 21. They even offer everyone a calculator on the website to figure their "true" marathon time (the course was 26.47 miles long). The people of Cincinnati are so friendly and helpful. I was impressed with the crowd support. I will recommend this race to my friends, and if I ever happen to be in the area again on the first Sunday in May, I will be on the starting line! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is my hometown marathon, so I have run it more than any other, and I'll be running it again in 2009. I always have a great time in this race which has great crowd support all the way(except for a one mile stretch). Positives: The expo is awesome and well-organized. The course is challenging but not too hard for the first- timer. The crowds are great. The course is beautiful. Minuses: The one- mile stretch on the highway. The new finish is a big improvement, but it was hard for families to get to the celebration area | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a fun and well-managed urban event. The organizers did a lot to make runners feel welcome and appreciated. Residents from the area really get into the theme. In the weeks prior to race day we received daily e-mail updates. Visitors should book a hotel early since everything close to the start/finish fills up fairly fast. The expo was in a large enough facility that even with so many people the congestion was not bad at all. Packet pick-up was smooth. Registrants each received a cool-looking technical T-shirt, poster, and tote bag all displaying the event logo. The artist who designed the poster and shirt was there autographing posters for free. The course goes through some nice parts of the city and crowd support was excellent. Each neighborhood had groups of people out cheering, partying, and handing out food and drink. It was not completely flat, but the hills were relatively modest and not really a factor. There's a rise of about 300 feet over miles 6 to 8, but otherwise the course is easy with some slight downhill portions. Like most large marathons the first couple miles were crowded making it hard to get going. Half-marathoners, relayers and marathoners all started together and some novice participants lined up too near the start line and got in the way. The weather in 2008 was excellent. Several musical acts of different genres were stationed throughout the course. Volunteers from various organizations (piglets) compete for having the best aid station and some of those were entertaining too. Adequate water, sport drink, and gels were available on the course. Traffic control was good. The finisher's medal is pretty cool and finishers were also given a towel with the event logo printed on it. Post-race refreshments were plentiful and easy to pick up. I recommend this event to anyone seeking a big-city marathon with a festive and friendly atmosphere. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my 14th marathon. It is one of the best I've done, and that includes Boston, NY, Marine Corps and Disney. As others have said, the water stops and porta-johns were numerous. The crowd was great, even with an early start time. While there are some hills, the worst come early in the race. It is a first-class race. My thanks to all involved! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I can't say enough about the quality of my race experience at the Flying Pig. Everything was top-notch. Great organization - even after a 3-alarm fire made for a need to re-route the course just before start. Expo was one of the best I've been too. Cinci is a clean, beautiful city. Water and Gatorade every mile. Great first-marathon experience. The only downside was choosing to stay at the Ramada in downtown Cinci. I highly recommend staying somewhere else. They gave away my room even after I called 3 days prior to confirm a late arrival. The hotel was close to the start, but dirty and in need of maintenance, and the staff was generally too busy to help you after you checked in. Pay a bit more and stay somewhere else. |
