"Organization not taking advantage of Hilton Head" (about: 2014)

The draw for a marathon in Hilton Head should be fast and flat and a scenic course. There has been a half-marathon for years. So the course was apparently an extension of the half-marathon course, which goes up and down the Cross Island expressway and over a bridge a couple times. It wouldn't have been so bad if the course went somewhere else after the first half, but, instead, it went across the highway and then up and down the expressway a second time with two more bridge crossings. Not enough scenery, no view of the lighthouse or the ocean at all. Other tweaks needed: Start the 5K after the half and full, instead of all together. Do the awards earlier. By two o'clock only a couple dozen people were left.

"Well organized and fun." (about: 2014)

The course was uncrowded and flat except for crossing the causeway bridge four times. The bridge crossing was scenic and not as difficult as the multiple up and down hills presented by most marathons. Water stations were adequate and Hammer Jel was offered three times. It was well organized and offered the usual refreshments including beer at the finish. There were very few spectators. I have done 46 marathons in the last 12 years and I would rate the location of Hilton Head Island as excellent and the course as relatively fast and enjoyable. Out of my last seven marathons, this was my fastest time.

"Incredibly Boring Course" (about: 2014)

Of the 40+ marathons I have run, this course ranks number one or two for utter boringness! It is hard to fathom why the organizers of the marathon didn't show off the beauty of the island with their course layout. Instead, much of the course was run on high traffic roads. I was shocked that we not only ran over the Fraser Bridge twice, but then repeated the up and over twice more. The bridge crossing was okay the first time and probably necessary the second time to return us to the correct side of the island, but why did they take us over this high traffic bridge a total of four times? This made an already boring course even worse. Why didn't they ever take us by the ocean?

The organizers need someone on their team with creative abilities. Someone who can take the beauty of the island and use it to their advantage in creating a fun, interesting course.

This creative person would also develop a new finisher's medal as the current one doesn't show off any features of the island. It couldn't be more bland. I will give them credit for a shirt that has color to it and has nice artwork.

The volunteers were great and took good care of us.

The course was flat except for the four crossings of the bridge. The final crossing was around mile 22 which will get your attention as it has a fairly good incline as most long bridges have.

If you need the state of SC for your 50 states, I would look elsewhere unless they change the course to feature the island.

"Great course & a job well done for an inagural." (about: 2014)

Thought the course was great, a mixture of roads, bridges, bike paths, woods & residential. 2nd. half for marathon was'nt just a repeat loop, it varied some. Good start for their first full. Need another portalet or 2, better controls at the finish on food so it lasts
and perhaps add coke or chocolate milk.
Volunteers friendly & helpful, especially in the rain. Will run again.
