COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This marathon was my second in Austin. The new course is fabulous: scenic, but a bit challenging. Still, I increased my time from last year by 45 minutes. The fans were great, and best of all, I managed to get a size small finisher's shirt (last year, the smalls were gone by the time I finished). More porta-potties would be nice next year. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Overall, my husband and I had a wonderful time at this race. In fact, when I read the comments from others about poor organization, I wonder if those people were at the same race. Expo was large and solid; registration was a breeze. Everyone was friendly. Had no issues with port-a-potties, in fact, found a set with NO LINES and waited only for two people before use. Start was fun with fireworks; course was somewhat bland scenery-wise, but fine. Note: this is a pretty hilly course! Came here for the flat course - and was surprised at the hills. Still PR'd by 15 minutes and qualified for Boston, but probably could have run 2-4 minutes faster on a flatter course. By the way, weather was PERFECT. Overall, a fabulous race. Loved the city, loved the people, loved everything. Loved it. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This new "hilly" course was definitely do-able. It was also quite scenic, at least for 21 miles of it or so. The race packet was really lacking, not even any race info in there! But overall, it was a good run - a great day weather-wise and very enjoyable. | |

"Challenging But Fair Course" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 The great fear among many runners prior to this race was that the new marathon course would destroy all possibility of a fast race. I can only tell you that this was my sixth marathon and I set a personal record in Austin. I heard no complaints from other runners about the course. It is challenging, but not impossible. My reaction is that it was a fair test of my abilities as a marathoner. The expo went smoothly, the crowds were very enthusiastic, the weather was perfect, the course was scenic, the bands and the bagpipers got my blood stirring, the fireworks at the start were great, and the police did a good job of traffic control. Oh, I almost forgot about the lady in front of the Catholic church at the 10-mile marker sprinkling holy water on the racers. Nice touch! I gave the course only 4 stars because of the steep decline just past mile 23. That hurt! Something more gradual would have been better. I gave the organization only 4 stars because I thought the organizers were slow to post information to the website. It was not until the last month that a significant amount of information was posted there. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The course is boring, yes, except for the final run around the capital. The fans however were amazing. They brought their own stuff to offer runners. You couldn't go a half-mile without people screaming for you. The fans were great! | |

COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 I have run the Austin Marathon several times and had a satisfactory experience. However, this year the course was new and was advertised as fast and flat. In fact, it was the hardest course I have ever run - nothing but hills. The race was poorly organized. There was no visible medical personnel or first aid tents throughout the course. They ran out of water at mile 3, but did have PowerAde. There was no crowd support except at the finish line. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I have run the marathon in Austin three times before this year's race. In the past, the course was fast, but this year's, because of the hills, I increased my time from last year by 29 minutes. Maybe it is because I just ran a 100-mile race two weeks before. Not sure. Spectators were great, and aid stations great; it was just the course change that was not what I expected. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 The course was very hilly and challenging, but very scenic and enjoyable. I'm not opposed to a hilly marathon course; I felt I had earned my medal. The crowd support was terrific, and there were few parts of the course where there were no spectators. The organization seemed to be good, other than the late arrival of pace leaders in the starting corrals. The starting area was already jam-packed as the pace leaders arrived with their signs. The expo was great, and the medal and finisher's shirt were very nice. I hope Austin sticks with the loop course, despite the hills. | |

"Good event on a challenging course" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 The course was very scenic and takes you through some of the best of Austin. I have only a few marathons under my belt but this was by far the hilliest course I have ever run. It was very challenging. Very well organized. Very good aid stations and traffic control. Only problem was that there were a lot of slow runners at the front of the start. Good runner's etiquette would take care of this. The crowds were incredible. It was like a mini-Boston in that you have spectators the whole way. For the half-mile from the capitol to the finish, the crowd is five-deep on each side. Great support and great finish. |
