COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my 9th marathon and by far my favorite. I loved everything about it. The funny emails, the beautiful course and, most of all, the amazing, generous and spirited spectators. I'll certainly run this race again! | |

There are so many Streets in each little town with the same or similar name that your GPS gets thrown of. We are from Pittsburgh where there are no straight street but this one was tough Jim | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon. I appreciated all the funny but informative emails, the pre-race run, the expo question and answer. The volunteers at FC High school were great. Being able to stay warm inside the school before the start was also great. I cannot say enough about the many spectator and volunteers along the route. Overall I am extremely impressed at how well organized the event was!!!! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I generally gravitate towards the hardest, trail marathons, and this was definitely an 'easy' marathon... but it was a blast. The course is interesting and varied, the towns you run through give amazing support, and everything was well organized. My only complaint was that the emails, while well-written and entertaining, were so frequent and detailed that it was hard to find the information I actually needed. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my 7th marathon and my 1st Steamtown, while I was trying to qualify for Boston (didn't happen due to my own set backs) I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this race! For such a small field the communities were out in full force and there were not many areas of quiet time(which is a good thing) Supportive spectators! Phenomenal post race staff! Amazing volunteers offering cheers at EVERY SINGLE water station!! Beautiful scenery!! And the icing for me was the kids from St. Joseph's cheering (I am a pediatric ER nurse so that really tugged at my heart strings!) thank you for a great race experience!! Looking forward to running Steamtown again! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Loved Steamtown. My first 'small' marathon. Super well organized, crowd in the towns were great. PR by over 10 minutes. Tough parts were those gentle inclines before the downhills. Got to train a little more for the downhills and I will definitely be back! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a pretty great marathon. Sure there are a little things to improve but... Runners really are welcomed warmly by the vols and the folks along the way. They seem to go out of their way to haul out water and fruit and candy all along the route. One women saved my life with two Advil! All set up in little cups if you needed to grab one. People on their porches waving and cheering from the start to finish. Sure they are a fraction of what you see in Boston but the genuine enthusiasm is more motivating. The kids at the school where the race starts were really terrific. Helpful and supportive. Again, it didn't seem that they had to do this but that they wanted toget up at 5am on Sunday morning! The second half of the course is less wonderful as it runs along a rail trail and through industrial outskirts of Scranton. But I'll be back. Kudos to the organizers and the local community for making this memorable experience. | |

A great mix of roads through small towns and some rails to trails that make you feel like you're moving so fast! Great job Steamtown organizers. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my frist marathon and it truly was a great one! PRO's -funny e-mails from asst. race director -warming up before the race in the school gym was very nice -gatorade/water stations frequent -amazing organization for spectators -St. Jude spectators by Mile 24, very moving and motivational. CON's -I was not a fan of the trail surface...I do trail run but this surface was very rocky and didn't feel good on my joints. -Smoking by the finish line. I was sitting down after the race and there was a woman smoking right by me, it was the last thing I wanted to smell after running 26.2 miles! | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Everything about this race is very well organized. A big plus is there's no half marathon or relay with the full marathon, which seems increasingly rare these days. This was my first Steamtown, and I finished in 3:04. I've run 8 other marathons and other than Boston this was my favorite. My family and I stayed near the start in a quaint roadside hotel that was straight out of the 1950's. It was spartan, but clean and quiet. While we were eating dinner in the attached restaurant, the proprietor brought us a copy of that day's newspaper that had each of the runners names printed in it. Nice touch. The course for me was deceptively fast. I train in the mountains of central Pennsylvania, so wasn't worried too much about pounding the quads on the downhills. Though despite constant warnings not to go out too fast, that's exactly what I did! Every time I looked at my splits in the early miles, I was 10-15 seconds faster than where I should have been. Which made the small hills at the end really feel steeper and longer than they were. I can't wait to do this race again and pace myself properly. As much as I liked this race, I do have one complaint about the course, and that's the 2.5 miles or so you run on the bike trail. If you're running for time or a PR or BQ, listen up. I train on a bike trail at home quite often, and it's covered with finely ground stone dust. The bike trail you run on in Steamtown has many larger rocks, and there isn't a grooved section where the trail is worn down and you can avoid the rocks. Constantly having to be on the lookout for rocks and trying to find a smooth part of the trail really disrupted my rhythm. A couple of times I stepped on a larger rock and I could definitely feel it through my racing shoes. I heard many similar comments afterward when talking with runners who finished before/after me. A local runner told me after the race the directors are considering expanding the mileage run on the bike trail. I really hope this isn't the case. It would make me think twice about going back. The course volunteers were awesome! At EVERY aid station a volunteer was clearly and loudly announcing who had water and who had gatorade. Additionally, many of the residents along the course had their own aid stations that were well stocked. Spectator support picks up/drops off as you enter/leave each town. It's like a miniature version of Boston in that regard. Post race party was AWESOME! My son loved being at the minor league baseball stadium and I couldn't believe they didn't charge for my family to eat. What a deal! |
