"Great race overall; would consider again." (about: 2012)

This was my 5th marathon, my sister's 1st. Thanks Jim Cummings for the frequent amusing email updates. Pasta dinner was good. We were very impressed with the bus line-up (and sorry there were so many wasted!) Spectators were sometimes rare, but we appreciated any and all support from complete strangers. The scenery was beautiful this time of year! There were more uphills than expected (but aren't there always?!) This about sums it up: a very nice race overall - THANK YOU

"Steamtown 2012 was the perfect race" (about: 2012)

I really enjoyed the Steamtown marathon this year. It is my 9th marathon and my fastest by seven minutes! I really enjoyed the pre-race e-mail updates. Full of good info and humor. The people helping run the race were helpful and kind. It was in the high 30's at the start but you could stay warm in the high school. Race day the temps were perfect, mainly in the 40's and overcast. For a smaller race there were a number of spots with good sized crowds out cheering the racers on, playing music, and providing additional water. After the first mile it was very easy to dial into a specific pace and maintain it. I ran the first half at a conversational pace, which is still fast because it is downhill I worked a little harder the last quarter and managed negative splits. The hills at the end are a pain but you get warned about them so I was definitely mentally prepared. I will definitely run Steamtown again.

"Best race EVER" (about: 2012)

I had never run a full distance marathon until the 2012 Steamtown. I have run in a couple 1/2 marathons (1 at Disney World) which had about 15,000 entrants in each. The support of the NEPa community was AMAZING. There were more people cheering for this race than the races with nearly 10x the competitors!! Of note, there are uphills throughout the race, not just at the end (as I had read). I plan to run it again in the future and hope to encourage some friends/family to do it with me:)

This is the 5th marathon that I have run, and I have to say that the course was not only great (i.e. really damn fast) but it was also during peak foliage and beautiful. The organization was superb and the spectators, although not as name as some races were more enthusiastic that any others that I have even encountered. Truly a race that I look forward to doing again!

"Thank you" (about: 2012)

I did Steam Town yesterday, this was my very first Marathon. What a wonderful day. I was in awe of the crowds. The course was fanstastic for beginners. I thought everything ran perfectly. My only complaint I had, which I do understand, is that the crowds and the volunteers seemed to died down when the majority of the runners passed through. Being that this was my first marathon I started to get alittle discouraged when I saw people 'closing' shop. I could have used that support those of just trying to finish need that support more then those who crossed the finish line when i was on mile 15 or something like that. However, I was in complete awe at a couple places
The cheerleaders lining the streat...Amazing.
Running on the trails with the leaves falling around me...breath taking
The community block parties, that is what kept me going. I went through one housing division right about mile 23 I think and whatching the kids play in the leaf piles really helped me continue. Because thats what its all about, right? Having fun.
So thank you for making my first marathon experience a fantastic one. The people of Steam Town are fantastic, the runners where so supportive, and the race organizers...well they sure know what they are doing because not once did I get confuse, and I easly do that. I just may see you next year!

"Everything about this event is great" (about: 2012)

I have run this race twice before I will go back again in the future. Everything about this event is great.

The most important part is the course and it is very good. I liked the change of pace of very easy trail midway through. I also liked the brief turn around at mile 18 so I could call out to friends I'd made who were ahead and also behind me.

The host school volunteers were nice and the portolavs were clean. At the end, there was enough food. Along the way, there were plenty of aid stations and cleaning crews. Debris was cleaned up almost immediately after I missed a few garbage cans.

I thought the medal was fine, and my wife liked the ribbon, but I must admit I just balled it up and tossed it on a shelf with all of the others, so medals don't mean a ton to me. Some people will complain about little details to find something.

I didn't go to the expo so I can't comment on that, but another good aspect is that someone else can get your packet for you.

From start to finish, this was an amazing marathon. This was my 2nd full marathon, and my first was a big city, huge event - so they were two very different marathons. That said, I would run Steamtown over that big event ANY DAY after the experience yesterday. The volunteers were fantastic, the local crowd support far surpassed anything I've ever experienced in another full or half marathon, the course was great to run, and the organization was flawless. This was so much fun from start to finish. Thank you Steamtown for an amazing marathon experience!

Just had to write my comments because this was easily the most fun marathon I have run. The people were awesome. So many volunteers and everybody was fabulous. There were plenty of water stops, along with many local people helping out, and I don't remember ever feeling a lack of cheering along the course.

This is one marathon I'd love to do again!

Thanks to all for your support and cheers - they were greatly appreciated.

"Better than I expected!!!!!" (about: 2012)

I can't say enough about how Awesome this race was! A perfect size! I was never on the road alone, yet never had to fight through crowds after the first 1/4 mile. Was freaked-out about the downhills before the race, but they weren't a factor negatively; but positively allowed gravity to save my legs for the last 18 miles! YAY!! Every town had cheering spectators who were also awesome!! Very Friendly My challenges were a few uphill sections that were not on the elevation chart! I was really ready to free-fall for the first 23 miles!! They weren't really that bad, just annoying that they caught me off guard. My other challenge was the trail portion! I had a good rhythm on the black top, but the rocks, gravel, and leaves meant every step was was different from the last. The good thing was when you got back on the road you were in the home-stretch. I would run this again exactly as it is. Will just be more prepared. Definitely had a great time, nothing I didn't like ... except maybe the long drive from VA.
