This was my 6th marathon but 1st at Steamtown. I really enjoyed the weekend. I love that it has an all volunteer committee so more of the money can go to a worthwhile charity. Great job!

"Steamtown Marathon was great!" (about: 2014)

I will start with my only negative comment. We received a call from the hotel we booked for our pre-race night - the Ramada Inn in Clarks Summit. They gave our room away just as we were leaving for Scranton. They said there were plumbing problems? So we got up early & drove to the race in the am. Don't book your pre-race night at the Ramada Inn in Clarks Summit! With that said I was a little worried about how everything else would continue.

The rest of the experience was great! We parked at the finish & boarded a bus to the start that was only a block away. The bus ride was long, but expected. I would advise others to make sure they empty their bladder well before boarding, because the ride got uncomfortable toward the end and as usual the port-a-potty lines at the start were long. This is expected at any race. The weather was perfect! I know it may not be fair to rate a marathon by weather, but let's face it the best races are run in perfect weather! It was perfect! The medal was nice with the train on the front. I loved the color of the shirt! Dark purple! I would advise others to order up a size. I thought the shirts were running small & a few others I talked to agreed. The spectators through the towns were all enthusiastic & generous with plenty of food and high fives. The post-race massage from the physical therapy students was also a 5! There was no wait at all for this perk! Could not believe this! No wait for a post-marathon massage? Wow! Last, the updates from the assistant race director were the most informative I have ever experienced in nine marathons and dozens of other races!!! I do believe I will be repeating this race next year!

Awesome experience. I started running 2 years ago for health reasons and after I ran my first 5K i swore that I would 'never' run another race. Well.....many 5 and 10 ks and a few 1/2's later-I decided to 'go for it' and run the marathon. I chose steamtown because of its proximity to home and its reviews. OK OK OK - I am hooked. So.....in 2 years, you have led me from 1 mile to get in shape to the marathon and I thank you. I WILL be back. LOVED IT !!!!!!

"Your PR Race" (about: 2014)

A down-hill course, stress-free logistics, hysterical race director, reasonable race fee...Steamtown Marathon is a hidden gem of a marathon in the North-east. I can't wait to tout this marathon to any runner asking me which fall marathon they should run next year.

The course: Yes, it really is downhill, with a few rollers in the beginning and three difficult climbs in the end. While this is a technical course, it is possible to run it strategically and have a major PR. I myself had a 8 minute PR I didn't think I had in me that day. My advice is to train on hills and put yourself on cruise control the first 16 miles of this race. The downhill will easily carry you with minimal effort. I also enjoyed the trails section, it wasn't long whatsoever, the trail was in great condition and it felt good on the legs running on a soft surface for a bit.

Logistics: There are plenty of hotels in the Scranton/Wilkes Barre area for reasonable prices to stay in the night before. I do recommend reserving your hotel as soon as you register though. I booked in May and it was slim pickings.
Race morning was very easy to navigate. Get dropped off downtown, load onto a school bus which takes you to the start. I LOVED that they allowed you to hang in the high school almost minutes before the start to keep warm and set yourself up for the race.

"Great race!" (about: 2014)

Steamtown was my 12th marathon and by far my favorite! The mostly downhill course got me an 11-minute PR and one minute from a BQ (never expected that result), the towns were amazing, the course was easy to navigate, plenty of aid stations, I cannot say enough! I will be back next year!!!

"Great experience, but water stop concerns" (about: 2014)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Steamtown Marathon

Thanks for the superb race. I would like to suggest something to do with the water stops from mile 18 on. It was difficult to discern official water stops, from neighbors and nice people having their own water stop. With all that happened in Boston and safety of runners, I will not drink from anything but an 'official' water stop. Could you please consider putting a sign at official water stops or a sign with a number, so we know how many more official ones there are. Thanks again!

"Awesome Marathon!!" (about: 2014)

This was my second marathon (1st Steamtown) and it was great!!
Pros:
-Funny emails from asst. race director
-Very well organized
-Great expo with lots of information and running apparel for sale
-Water/Gatorade stations were timed out very well and organized as to where which beverage was
-THE best spectators by far!! The Greenridge section of spectators were so welcoming and made me want to stop and party with them!!
-LOVED seeing the residents of St. Joseph's Center there. It made so many things be put into perspective.
-Great medal
-ALthough I didn't go through the food tent, I heard that it was a great assortment of goodies.
-Great job by patrol on bikes
-Great first aid stations/food stations and the variety of things that were available if needed.
-I have been running on trails for years so I found the course trails to be great! Considering the trails that I run on in my hometown are MUCH worse so it was a nice welcome for some softer and better conditions.

Cons:
-First Aid stations with the vaseline were NOT accompanied by a porta-jon nearby. That's a necessity if you need to use the Vaseline in some places!!
-Although I am happy I got a large for my shirt, they are small in size. I hope it doesn't shrink when I wash it.

I truly enjoyed this race!! Nice down hill for the first half, scenic fall colors and well supported race for a small town! Great Boston qualifier!! Just note that the course is very hilly at the end and is longer than 26.2!

"Local Support AMAZING!" (about: 2014)

6-10 previous marathons | 3 Steamtown Marathons

I consider this my homecoming race. Originally from the Scranton area, I moved to Florida almost a decade ago. But NEPA holds a place in my heart and I will run this race as long as I can. Seeing the local support, running thru the towns I grew up in, nothing compares to it. For those looking for a small, fast race, consider Steamtown. You'll love the scenery; you'll love the speed; and you'll never forget the people.
