"A great experience" (about: 2007)

A very friendly, well done race. The support along the route was wonderful. This was the first marathon I have ever run where the race director drove by and encouraged the runners. The only problem were the cones set out in the first half of the race in the middle of the road. They were hard to see ahead of time because of the crowd. People were dodging them all along. I missed one and went right over the top. I realize that they were there because for the second half of the race they wanted to be able to open one lane of traffic but they were a hazard. I thought it was overall a great race and city to visit. After-race food was great. The hotel accommodations were nice also.

This was our first time in Memphis, and we enjoyed it thoroughly. The course was outstanding and the organization great. Thanks for a great time!

"Great Event, Motivational, But Too Hilly" (about: 2007)

What a great event! The crowds were awesome and some seemed like they were working harder then us! I didn't think I could raise the money to be a hero, but seeing the importance of St. Jude Heroes makes me want to try next year. The signs for and from the kids touch your heart. Note to runners: this is a hilly course. I trained for hills but was still worn down by so many of them.

"Great half-marathon for my first time" (about: 2007)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first half marathon, and I could not ask for a better experience - from the Friday night check-in to Saturday morning. I could not ask for a smoother experience. The course was perfect, with just the right number of rolling hills. Fan support was better than I expected and really appreciated. Having all the families along the course thanking you for running for their children was a humbling experience, I only wish I could do more. The finish in AutoZone was fantastic, and the food and festivities were more grand than I anticipated. Thank you to St. Jude and all the sponsors for making this a great first event. Thanks to the the people of Memphis for their courtesy and support. I will be back again, but this time as a St. Jude hero.

"Great Job Memphis" (about: 2007)

I have run in all the St. Jude races the past 6 years, and will keep coming back. The food area seemed more crowded than usual, but this was more an indication of friends and family not knowing where to wait than any fault of the runners. As this race keeps growing, other arrangements might need to be made for crowd control in AutoZone park. The weather was great this year, and the course changed a little from past years so that runners actually run past the entrance to St. Jude - nice change!! Pictures of patients and families still gets me every time; my wife starts crying during these stages and we have to get it together to keep running. My biggest compliment is the t-shirt design; best one yet - stick with these colors and fun designs in the future.

Great job; will definitely be back.

I loved this race!! I don't know how they did it, but the race director managed to bring in PERFECT weather. It was great to have fully staffed and equipped water stations at EVERY MILE (LISTEN UP, CHICAGO). I was happy to run a race for a great cause, and the St. Jude signs along the way were truly inspiring. The finish in Autozone Park was great, and the food and beverages after the race were very nice. Great job, Memphis!! This is a must-do marathon, folks!

"Fabulous marathon - great finish-line experience" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Memphis Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my 27th marathon. I can state very affirmatively that the marathon experience doesn't get much better than this. I set a PR, the weather was perfect, the course is scenic and diverse, offering numerous attractions (e.g., Sun Studios, Beale Street, the Mississippi River, etc.) along the way, the medal is a winner, transportation and lodging are easy, organization was flawless, and I could go on.

The course, surprisingly, is very conducive to running a PR. I wasn't sure that would be the case, since the race dips down to Riverfront Drive, and then heads inland. But, the gentle rolls in the course offered diversity. Most of the inclines were pitched, but short, setting up nice, long declines - much better than a purely flat course, in my opinion. There were a disconcerting number of turns early on, but otherwise the course was run on long, straight lines.

And, as I mentioned in my subject line, the finish line is great. Runners run into the minor league baseball stadium onto the warning track in center field (and the stands were packed when I ran it - it was incredible), circle around the outfield to the third base line (for the marathon finish), and run to the finish. I was sobbing by the time I was done.

One other fabulous detail: Half-marathon food and drink was separated from the full-marathon food and drink. I can't tell you how many times I've run a marathon that combines with a half only to find out the half-marathon finishers have wolfed down all the food and Gatorade.

This was a great event.

"Terrific, inspiring marathon" (about: 2007)

Well organized, great crowd support, challenging course (rolling hills), and terrific entertainment. The weather was perfect this year. I enjoyed the city sights and the finish at AutoZone Park. It was truly an inspiration to run in support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a most worthy cause. The expo and goodie bags left something to be desired. Worth the trip from San Diego and I'll probably run this race again. Organizers should prepare for this race to continue to grow and plan accordingly.

Everything was very well done - from registration, to packet pickup, to the race itself, to the finish. They had by far the best food/beverages that I have seen at a marathon/half marathon. Nicely done, St. Jude. You should be proud of yourselves.
