"Fun, nearly flat, great people, music, weather" (about: 2006)

This was my first LA Marathon. I had been worried about the course, because it's downhill for the first 10 miles, then uphill toward the end. But once on the course, I was relieved that even the worst hill, around the middle of the course, wasn't bad at all. I was able to keep up the same turnover with a shorter stride.

The weather was perfect. The spectators were everywhere. I especially loved the bongo drummers who probably knew something about running, because they were beating out a perfect running tempo. LAPD on bicycles kept order, LAFD tended to the walking wounded, especially at the end of the race.

It was very well organized. (Except I, along with several other runners, was unable to find the sub-five-hour corral.) There were sufficient johns at the start and along the route, and the water and Gatorade were plentiful. (Note to runners: if you don't like Gatorade, don't throw it back at the volunteers, please. That's just rude.) I also liked the fact that mile markers were clear and easy to read, and working clocks at every mile showed the time, and especially helpful was the clock at mile 25.21, labeled "One mile to go!" because then I knew I had to run the last mile in 10 minutes to beat 4 hours, which I did, barely - a PR.

This was a lot of fun. I'm sure I'll be back next year.

"Outstanding race and outstanding support" (about: 2006)

My 1st LA Marathon and 30th overall. The race support and volunteers were second to none. Entertainment, both official and un-official, along the course was inspiring. While getting attended to at a Salonpas spray station, a woman, dressed courtesy of Victoria's Secret, offered me a lap dance. Did not take up the offer but will be a memory I will not forget.

The course offers some challenges during the last 7 miles, but nothing overwhelming. Congrats to the race organizers and volunteers.

I thought the race was run well. One thing I did not like was that somewhere in mid-course some woman was offering "lap dancing." People were taking them up on it. No class.

The los Angeles is a great event. I look forward to running it every year. It was my first marathon 5 years ago and this year will be my fifth year straight runnig it. I do wish the start time was earlier but other than that it is fun. A lot of sexy women runners always help the miles pass by. :)

I've done 5Ks with more finish-line festivities than the LA Marathon... and how do you have a race in LA and not see Hollywood? It was strip mall after strip mall....

If I'm not mistaken, that makes this one of the most special races anyone can run. PERIOD!!

I paid $45/day for at hotel room 5 blocks away. The plane ride was like $200 round-trip. The start line has it's own subway station. Your bib is a free all-day ticket for the whole public transportation system.

I've run NY twice, SF 3 times, and DC, among many others. LA just isn't set up to provide 26 continuous miles of interesting course. An unfortunate truth, though LA tries.

You really need to have a sense of humor to run this race. You'll see things like a Christian rap band and a lone African-American soul with a sign that says, "Police are Terrorists." You'll meet people who do nothing physical all year but run this race. You'll see children run the race. You'll meet runners who just runs this race. You'll see high school teams. The race has a strong sense of community. There are no lofty airs about it being an elite athletic event.

The LA Marathon is a big party for LA and you are invited. So run it with an open mind, have fun, and say good things about it. For crying out loud, Ali was there!!!

I was born July 26th, 1994 and in March of 2005 I finished the Los Angeles Marathon in 5:10. Sometimes I dream that I can fly, and on that day my dream came true forever. In 2006 I will live my dream again.

It's a big marathon, for sure, but has a long way to go before it equals the caliber of the alpha-marathons (Chicago, NY, London, Boston). The marathon is almost a little too big considering the organization. LA is such a sprawling suburb of a city, it is a little tough to organize such a large event. I guess it kind of mirrors LA itself, as LA struggles to become a real city and join the ranks of Chicago, NY, and London, the marathon is doing the same.

Running in LA in 1989 and 1990 was a thrill, and I would do it again.
