First Marathon

This was my first and I will be back. Thanks to all of the volunteers for all of the support and encouragement. The course was more of a challenge than I expected and the heat was tough after a long cold winter of training. The workers and spectators were awesome. GREAT RACE for first-timers!!!

This was my first marathon and what an experience. As others have commented the course is not as flat as the elevation graph seems to indicate. The heat and very strong winds added a lot of time to my run. The fans, though few and far between, were genuinely enthusiastic. The volunteers also did an excellent job with the same day race packet pick-up. There was virtually no line up. All in all an enjoyable experience!

"A fine half-marathon, but should start earlier." (about: 2004)

This was my fourth half marathon. They have all been different races and I would rank this one 3rd out of the 4. Two of the others were a very gentle down hill with no looping or backtracking.

It was well organized and the route was fine, but the race should have started earlier in the day. It started at 8:30 am and after 20 minutes of running it was warmer than comfortable. I heard more than one runner mumbling under his/her breath about the heat. Water stations were nicely spaced, so that helped. Other races I have run started at 6:30 or 7:00 am so that you avoid a lot of the heat of the day. Granted, it was a little chilly when those races started, but you warm up quickly and avoid over-heating later.

I saw two runners at different locations on the race route being loaded onto ambulance and I couldn't help but wonder if they had gotten heat stroke. I felt really bad for the full marathon runners who wouldn't be finishing the race until 12 noon or later. I think the temperature was almost 70 degrees.

The last mile or so of the race track also made us run past a spot where we could see the finish line, but then we had to run away from the finish line, down the road and then U-turn back to the finish line, which was frustrating psychologically.

Other than that, the volunteers were great, the course went around some pretty farming properties, and the food at the end was nice. Overall, good race. I'll probably go back next year.

It?s tough to plan out a 26-mile course that will please everyone. I felt it had a little of everything and enjoyed every mile. Great locations and intervals for all the water stops - I would just be getting thirsty when I could see the next one up ahead. The volunteers were great always encouraging. Can?t wait to see the photos. I hope I look as good as I felt. Thanks for a great race!

I ran this in 2001 and I love the updated course. The last 2 miles were beautiful. I thought the volunteer bikers were very encouraging, and all the volunteers did a great job. Also, in spite of the heat (70s) I ran my 2nd best marathon time.

Ran this marathon as a last minute thing, and was very pleasantly surprised.

Course is awesome. Only one short section of road with any traffic to speak of, lots of nice farmland. The course is also easy. A few gradual ascents, but no real hills to speak of.

I had volunteers on bikes come talk to me many times throughout the race. That made the things much easier, as I ran almost the last 16 miles alone.

The wind is to be expected being so close to the lake. Fortunately, it's mostly at your back the last 8-10 miles.

Not many spectators, but the ones that were there made noise.

Lots of food at the end, and a nice finish area with an announcer saying all the finisher's names.

Excellent marathon overall.

"A great time and an easy course!" (about: 2004)

Although it was a really hot day, and few of us were used to running in the heat, this half marathon was a great time. I really appreciated the water stops every 2 miles. The course was an easy, flat loop, but the occasional passing of cars was a bit unnerving. All of the runners encouraged each other, and although I did not PR this course do to the heat, I had a fantastic time. I plan to run this race again next year.

Today was the day! I am now home and recovering! The course was nice and since we aren't living in Nebraska, the 'relatively flat' description was right on the money. I am giving the spectators a 5++ because although they were sparse, they were AWESOME! My fellow runners, the volunteers and those spectators helped me more than I can say. This was a VERY GREAT DAY!!!! Thank you!!!! Woooohooooo!

$60.00 is way overpriced for a marathon where you are running in a state park and on a road where there is no traffic control.

2003 was my first, and really enjoyed the experience. Warning - this course is not as flat as advertised, and it was unfortunate that it was that close to the lake without getting any good views during the run. There are not many fans, so I was really glad to have run with friends. Really well organized and plenty of food after. Volunteers were GREAT! It was a real pain to track down the finish line photo and took several (like more than 2!) months for them to be available... which was disappointing for a first-timer excited to have something to frame.
