"challenging trail 1/2" (about: 2019)

Didn't know what I expect coming in. For a 1/2 marathon trail I would say this is either a 7-8 out of 10. Many roots and undulating hills throughout until the end. Its a great workout. Don't come into this race expecting a PR or maintain a certain pace unless you are familiar. Only gripe is that I wish there were porta johns on the trail. I didn't see any. Otherwise the organization was top notch along with a small group of runners. Good prep for a full marathon. But they also offer a 40k and 40 mile run.

The course was great and the temps were perfect. Almost all of the course is on trails except for road crossings. Very well organized and well marked for the entire course. Past comments noted that the course has a lot of roots, but I thought it was no more than any trail.

"Marathon was only 25 miles." (about: 2015)

Which is fine except that they advertise it as a marathon? Even on the marathon/40 mile map I now see they have 25/40 miles at the end. The last mile marker I saw was 24, and my garmin which was closely tracking the mile markers said 25.0 miles at the finish. Also, be aware that we shared some of the trails with mountain bikers.
So, bottom line imo, its a nice 25 mile run, but don't do it if you have your heart set on completing a marathon, because it is NOT.

"Beautiful race" (about: 2014)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Triple Lakes Trail Race
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 4

For someone looking for a challenge in a beautiful setting, this run delivers. The course is rocky, covered in roots, and has a lot of elevation and direction changes. Most of the run is in a beautiful forested setting with occasional views of the lake that you run around. This is definitely one of the prettiest marathons I have run.

Spectators were sparse but encouraging, and while the trails were not closed for the race, other users were polite. The runners themselves were very pleasant and friendly.

The organization was well below average. The course map was almost impossible to interpret, and course markings were sparse and only barely adequate. This was particularly true towards the end of the race, and there were many times my wife and I had to continue on pure faith that we had the right path. We only got lost once, with a group of other people, and it only cost about a minute. Aid stations were few and far between, so I recommend that most runners carry their own water. Fortunately this was clearly communicated and we came prepared.

All of this made for a pretty and pleasant small town marathon with a very friendly atmosphere and some live-able quirks.

HOWEVER, and this is a big HOWEVER... the Marathon is not actually a marathon! Imagine my confusion when we rejoin the half marathon path, and the half marathon signs show that they have one less mile until the finish than the marathoners. When our mile 21 sign showed up, the half-marathoners were on mile 9. Were the signs wrong? No we only ran 25+ miles. It wasn't until we finished that we realized we had been cheated a mile. Fortunately the race was challenging enough that I think I more than made up for that lost mile in terms of calories burned. But I can't imagine the thought process of advertising a marathon and then laying out a 25 mile-and-change course. To this day I still don't know exactly how far we ran. I should note that nowhere in any of the course materials or promotional materials was there any mention that this was not a full marathon.

If you are a local or someone looking for a pleasant and challenging 25 mile trail run in a fantastic setting, this is a good marathon to try. I struggled with the challenging course, but my wife and I both had a great time. But be advised that you'll have about a mile to make up in the parking lot before or after the official run, if you want to run a true marathon on race day.

"BEAUTIFUL." (about: 2013)

This is the BEST organization I have seen for a race. Super friendly pickup and patient race director waiting for the late starters!
The treat is obviously the trail course, with beautiful scenic views - of course, the gorgeous weather helped a little, no fog today. The shade of the woods, and silence except for birds is super relaxing, except that you have to watch every step for roots and continuous elevation changes, steep ups and downs - but you already knew that lakes weren't flat, right ?
Very friendly spectators, bring your own - it is easy for them to catch you on the course.
Since the venue also hosts a 40-miler, you feel privileged to stop at 26.2.
Scott and his team have put together an extraordinary event, with a superb medal and a feast at the finish, and results posted in real-time. You wonder how they do that for $55, really. Try it, you will come back!

"Great Course, Terrible race organization" (about: 2012)

The course of this race was brutal for my first marathon. However, I was banking on what the website told me about the aid stations in way of goods and the distance between each one. Their website says they will have gels at 2 aid stations which was not true, they were no where to be found. The water was luke warm along with the gatorade and the snacks were just not doing it for me the type of terrain and the beating the body is taking. Also the rules cleary state in BOLD letters that no headphones are authorized and a great number of people had them on. Rules are rules. If they put out in the race packets what will be at each aid station then that's what they should have, at least some. Luckily we were smart to bring our own water bottles because there is no way the aid stations were close enough to supply the body enough fluid for the duration and distance. Great course though and am happy I completed it but seriously, Scott the race director should have a better handle on it. Oh..one more thing, there was no water point at the pre race area to get water before leaving.

First Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

I did come in last with my time 6:34...however, since I do not consider myself a runner, this was HUGE. I am so happy to finish my first marathon...coming across the finish line hearing my incredible husband cheering me on was the BEST! I trained on some trails but mostly streets/bike paths so my time was slower than I thought. This course will keep your attention on the up & up or you will fall. I saw 8 other runners (3 of them were the 40 milers passing me (very sad) 'oh well'. If you are thinking about running this one watch your feet, have fun and trust me, if I can finish this, you can too! During this race, I thought of many people that have touched me and are very sick right now with Cancer and other diseases and all of them pulled me through this run...I just keep thinking, 'don't quit on them them, because if they could be running this right now they would.'

"A real 'toe-stubber' of a trail!" (about: 2011)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Triple Lakes Trail Race
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

This was a nice early autumn trail run. You start on the road but other than some short biketrail segments and bridge crossings, the rest is trail. I would guess that the majority of the trail system is actually single track. You are mostly in the shade and you travel through marsh, pines, oaks and even a section with bamboo! The weather was nice this year, a slight chill at sunrise, an occasional breeze but probably not more than 70 degrees or so. I must admit though that of all my trail runs, this was not the most difficult technically, but it was certainly the most prolific in toe-stubbing roots that I've ever seen. There are some portions of the trail that were like running over bridge grating they were so dense. Minimalist trail shoes are probably not advised. There was at least one runner with a broken toe. Mine were pretty sore.
The water/aid stations were well stocked and there was plenty of post race food/drink. The course (road and trail) are not closed and it was a little annoying later in the race bumping into mountain bikers. I think overall the course was well marked but there was some confusion on the distance markers. All race events shared the same finisher medal which was a little disappointing.

"Nice trail run" (about: 2009)

3 previous marathons | 1 Triple Lakes Trail Race
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

Pros:
Nice course
Good time of year
Peaceful
Good food and drinks at finish
Awesome volunteers (I ran with a water bottle and was able to pop the top and have two volunteers fill my bottle up with Gatorade at the same time)
Nice start and finish area (my wife and little boy hung out at the park while I ran)

Cons:
I had to leave before the awards ceremony
Aid stations are really far apart
Minimal spectators (understandable; where are they going to access the trail from?)
Lots of roots (I fell three times, but I still liked the trail)
Not very many runners (I was lucky to have another runner with me for the last half, but if it weren't for him, I would have been really lonely)

I would like to run this race again. You just need to be aware that the aid stations are far apart and you won't hear very many cheers. Bring your own fluids and gel and have at it.

"GREAT RACE OVERALL" (about: 2009)

2 previous marathons | 1 Triple Lakes Trail Race
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I enjoyed the race, but it seems like the half-marathon is treated like a second cousin. Why are there no mile markers for the half? We should know how far we are down the course as well just like the marathoners.

I loved the blanket as well; they gave nice prizes, and the course is on lovely (if difficult) trails.
