"Great place for a PR" (about: 2012)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Earth Day Challenge
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is a very small marathon, about 99 finishers in 2012. You run the first half with about 300 half-marathoners, but then keep going. First four miles are hilly, but remaining 21.2 consist of two big out-and-backs, one to the west and one to the east, on an asphalt trail created from an abandoned rail bed next to a river. Because of the out-and-backs, any head-wind will also be a tail-wind, so it helps you as much as hurts you (and kind of makes up for the monotonous flatness, in my opinion). The size made it ideal in terms of parking, and the setting made it beautiful. Plus having it start and finish at the Kenyon Athletic Center meant great showers at the end for the marathoners. If big crowds cheering for you is crucial to you, you wouldn't want this marathon, but if setting a PR on a mostly dead flat course is your goal, with small numbers of very nice supporters, this is perfect. If you are a Kenyon alumnus/a (as I am), it is all that much more fun.

"Great small race" (about: 2012)

| 1 Earth Day Challenge
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This was a great small race. The first four miles were hilly, but the rest of the course was flat. Not a lot of spectators, but the volunteers and other runners on the course were friendly and encouraging.

"Small, scenic and serene!" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I can only think of very positive things to say about this marathon. After doing several larger races, this race was a welcome change. No crowds, no stress. Organization was perfect. The other runners were the friendliest I have encountered anywhere. Yes, there was the headwind in the last section, but the weather cannot be controlled!

"Had a great time!" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 We enjoyed this low-key, scenic race. We walked the half-marathon and enjoyed the company of one of the volunteers on bicycle who, like all the volunteers, was very encouraging. The Sports Center is beautiful and the food after the race was great!

"Overall, very nice race" (about: 2011)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 This is a great little race. My only comment is that I thought the aid stations were too far apart. I prefer not to carry water with me and 2 miles was too long to wait for a drink, especially given the windy conditions. Otherwise, great, great job all around.

"Nice, no hussle." (about: 2011)

| 1 Earth Day Challenge
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Superb organization. Great volunteers and spectators - nice people all around. The trail is scenic, but could become somewhat monotonous (too straight), especially in the second half. Strong winds were among the factors I had a slower time than expected (still a PR). Great expo afterward, as it was mostly about the Earth Day. Kenyon Athletic Center rocks - made me want to go back to college. All in all, a great, small-scale race. Would recommend it to anyone!

"Great race" (about: 2011)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Earth Day Challenge
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my fourth marathon but first time running this one. Everything flowed easily. Packet pick up was super easy but I did pick mine up the day before so that made it a bit easier. The race felt like a local 5K but about 12 times longer. :) The only bad thing was the wind. Of course that is nothing that the organizers could help, but the last 6 miles of the full marathon were against a 20-30 mph headwind. The same wind that helped the runners at Boston the next day. I would run this marathon again. Great job.

"Nice Race" (about: 2010)
3 previous marathons
| 1 Earth Day Challenge
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 A very nice marathon with a small number of runners. Not many spectators, which is fine. Only concern was the lack of nutrients during the race. Gel stations were late in the race (mile 17), and then on the return they were out of gel. No fruit was offered during the race or after the race. I could not find the meals after the race due to the number of individuals in the arena. Not sure if I would run this race again, due to the lack of nutrients following the race. |
