"Well organized run on tough course for good cause" (about: 2010)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 I've run the Grandfather and Hatfield & McCoy Marathons, and this one was every bit as challenging. The roots, rocks and stream crossings surprised me on my first trail marathon, but they made finishing extremely rewarding. I would highly recommend this run to everyone looking for a small, well-organized run held for a good cause.

"Great, low-key, technical course" (about: 2010)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 If you want to run a good, technical course, this one is for you. This was my second trail marathon. Great course for a trail marathon - not many spectators, but hey, it's a trail run in the woods; where would they be? Aid stations were well stocked and every 3 to 3.5 miles. The red beans and rice after the race really hit the spot, and we got a late check-out, so we had time to shower before starting home.

"Great small marathon in a beautiful park" (about: 2009)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This was a very nice small race, although it grew in size from its 2008 inaugural run. Aubrey Hogan did a great job of organizing. The trail was already well-marked for bikers, but any questionable areas were marked off with rope/tape to prevent you from making a wrong turn. The runners spread out quickly, so I was alone for most of the race, which was very peaceful. Although there had been heavy rain for a few days, the path wasn't really slippery, although I did slow way down on steep downhills and sharp switchbacks. There was plenty of food at the end, and the race director and all volunteers were EXTREMELY friendly people. I hope to run this again.

"Awesome trail run." (about: 2009)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 If you like small, low-key, well supported, somewhat challenging trail runs, this race is for you. Starting with a very nice dedicated race director and staff, and culminating in a beautiful and fabulous trail, this is a 5-star event. The race is located in Ruston, Louisiana, and makes a great double with Little Rock, Arkansas the next day. The course is a 10-mile dirt loop, which is repeated approximately 2 and 1/2 times. There are many hills, up and down, and many turns on the course. The trail was very runnable, but there were some roots, or foot grabbers along the way, as well as a few minor stream crossings. The course was well marked, with easy to follow signs. There were 3 or 4 aid stations along the way, which you passed several times. They were well stocked with Gatorade, water and a large variety of snacks. There were no spectators (that's why I put in only 4 stars), but the volunteers were all very friendly and supportive. There was a home-cooked meal of Louisiana red beans and rice, but unfortunately, we had to go quickly back to the hotel for our late checkout. Make sure you get a late checkout in advance before you make reservations, as some of the hotels were a little stingy with the checkout time. Do not expect a fast time on this course, but do plan on having an enjoyable time. I would highly recommend this race to anyone who enjoys a small group or even complete solitude in a lovely and slightly challenging environment.

"This was a tough course" (about: 2009)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 A cold wet day was met with muddy slick conditions on the trail. It had rained pretty hard the night before, but mostly stopped during the race. It was one of those races where you were unsure of whether to bring the rain gear or not. The course was composed of two 10-mile loops, plus the first 6 miles for the last loop. The course did not have a lot of large hills, but there were lots of ups and downs. It was a run where you had to keep your eyes on the trail or risk falling over a tree root. The staff was great and friendly. The three aid stations were about 3 miles apart, but adequate. They has a nice selection of food and drinks. I would recommend bringing a water bottle. The course was pretty well marked and a lot of locals ran who were able to offer guidance on the trail. This is not a PR type of course... it's more of a worse type of course. The staff had plenty of food even for the slowpokes who finished at 7 hours. I liked the race and it was a reasonable drive to Little Rock for those folks looking for a second marathon to run on Sunday! I got an okay medal and a very nice cotton shirt. The long-sleeve shirt was a nice auburn color. For the modest price, it was a real bargain.

"Fantastic, small, no-frills marathon" (about: 2009)

| 1 Larry Yeagle Trail Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 The Yeagle Trail Marathon was fantastic. It is a very small event with only 50-ish marathoners. It is run on a very nice 10-mile loop of mountain bike trails with constant small hills, lots of roots, and several small creek crossings. With a week of steady rain prior to the race the creeks were a bit more substantial than usual, but made it more a true test. There were 4 water/food stops in the 10 mile loop, so supplies were ample. I ditched my fuel belt after the first lap. Spectators were minimal, which I like on the trails. The trail was marked exceedingly well; I never felt lost or had any questions as to the directions, despite having never been on these trails. Post-race spread was minimal, but the steaming hot bowl of red beans and rice was outstanding and really tasted great. The shirt and medal were nothing special, but for a $30 entry fee, what do you expect? I thought this was a great race, a tough but fair and well marked trail, and would highly recommend this race. If you are one who needs large crowds, lots of spectators, or long flat stretches of smooth road, find another race. |
