"A Decent Trail Marathon" (about: 2015)

First off, never trust reviews where everyone gives 5 stars out of 5 stars for everything. It is impossible for a trail marathon to have 5 stars for fans/spectators given the nature of running in the woods almost the entire race. There were a handful of spectators near the start/finish area but outside of that, fans were non-existent. The marathon is a three-loop course with several short climbs and one longer climb that seemed to be about half a mile long. The longer climb was on the 'summit loop trail' about three miles into the loop. Summit is a relative term, as the top of the climb is only 325 feet above sea level. Ups and downs are frequent later on in the course, and those take a tole on your legs by the third loop of the marathon. Overall, the trails are challenging yet very doable for a marathon distance. Aid stations were roughly three miles apart and well stocked with gels and snacks. I did not carry my own water, but I would recommend doing so for this race. At times I definitely felt thirsty between the aid stations. The marathon organization was good enough, and the race directors were up front about certain issues they experienced leading up to the race (some of the shirts did not arrive by race day, although the race directors made it clear that everyone would get a shirt eventually). Nonetheless, in its 8th year, you should not be having issues with any race logistics. The marathon did offer free camping at the park the night before and the night after the race. Wanting to take in the whole trail marathon experience, I camped the night before and don't regret it. However, most camp sites were taken over by various running clubs who made an event out of camping and running a race (it seemed that most campers were running the 10 mile race that was part of the event rather than running the marathon). Because of these running clubs, my camp site felt exclusionary and people stayed awake talking by the camp fire until at least 11pm. If you are looking for a fall trail marathon in the mid-Atlantic area, I would recommend this race. Be mindful, though, that it is not the greatest race in the U.S. as you might believe given all of the 5 star reviews. It's decent, just not great.

"My favorite Marathon" (about: 2015)

11-50 previous marathons | 6+ Medoc Trail Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This is by far my favorite marathon as I have run all 8 that have been held. I will be back for my 9th next year. This a great race on beautiful scenic trails that have a bit of everything: rocks, roots, some nice climbs/descents, as well as some nice runnable sections. The race team has managed to make this a must do race with their emphasis on making this a runner friendly event from beginning to end from the course being well marked, with great aid station and the best volunteers manning them, to the best swag (shirt, medal, and finishers surprise). Put this on your must do list!

This race was an awesome first race. The volunteers and organizers were so amazingly friendly and motivating I did not feel intimidated at this race. The trail is so beautifully brutal. I will never forget the uniqueness of this course.

This race is so much fun. The volunteers are awesome and the swag is cool. They have a finisher's surprise which was a nice quarter zip sweat shirt this year and the finishers medal is huge. I can't say enough about the Medoc Trail Marathon.

Bling Galore! Aid Stations are well stocked and perfectly placed. Just enough hills to make it fun and not kill you. Volunteers and participants are awesome folks.

This was my first marathon and I couldn't have been more happy with it. The trails and course were great and the mud made it more exciting! The aid stations were stocked really well and the volunteers did an awesome job keeping us hydrated and motivated. I couldn't have been more pleased.
