"A perfect trail race." (about: 2010)

This is what trail running is all about. The race is compose mostly of great single track trails during the fall with some great scenery. The course couldn't have been marked any better and the aid stations were spaced out just right

The race organization was amazing and made every finisher feel like they won the race. The medal and shirt are top quality. You can tell that the race director puts a lot of care and effort into this race.

This is a must-do for anyone who wants to experience a trail marathon or for seasoned veterans looking to branch out onto trails.

Surprisingly different the second time out. I ran the half again, but this year the half was the day before and it ran point-to-point mostly over the marathon's out-and-back course. This made a big difference because the trail on the east side of the lake is a lot easier, which, when combined with both the gentle last mile and the mile over the dam, makes the run a lot less overwhelming. Also, the trail appeared to have been recently groomed (by the state park, I assume), which meant no briars or low-hanging branches this time. The race was also three weeks earlier, which meant both a warmer day and many fewer leaves to hide tripping hazards. On Saturday there was no mud at all. You may see all of that as good or bad, depending on how you like your cake, but it definitely goes to show the vagaries of trail running. Still, a beautiful, challenging run with friendly, low-key organization. The later start time made getting to the race much easier, and sunrise over the lake was still gorgeous. Five runners finished both the half and full - hats off to you.

I love this race; it is very scenic. The course was marked much better this year. There aren't many spectators, but the volunteers are wonderful. :) I will do it again next year!

"Challenging trail run" (about: 2010)

I ran the half. Very nice shirt and medal. Most of the course is a constant up or down (nothing very long) on a narrow dirt trail with lots of roots and some stone. Beautiful scenery (when you dared to take a peek). Second half of the half is tougher. No problem following markers to stay on the correct trail. Although I enjoyed the race, I likely would not do it again. I'm just too much of a klutz not to hurt myself on a course like this.

I have run many, many marathons. I am from Utah and have run trails from Moab to Yellowstone. Overall for the full 26 miles this course was amazingly scenic. The fall colors were awesome, the creeks, lake, trees and the little settler village near the midway point were great. The course was challenging and slow, with lots of little ups and downs and slick surfaces, but what do you expect from a trail run? I took my camera and shot over 50 photos along the way. The directions to the start were a little sketchy.

"Challenging but worthwhile" (about: 2009)

I ran the half-marathon. As others have said, the trail was bumpy and slick, although the scenery was ironically tranquil.

This was the first time I've run in a race where, when someone approached from behind, the runner in front would invariably ask, "Would you like to go around?" because there was no room to pass, sometimes for more than a mile or so.

The medals that were handed out to finishers were hard to read, because the writing is written over a graphic with trees (it would have looked better had the graphic been cropped, so that the letters stood out by themselves). Given how hard it was to see where we were running, though, maybe it's an aptly suited memento after all.

Overall, though, a VERY fun experience.

I must ask, though, was the half really 14.1 miles??? If so, that would explain the high run times....

"Worth the Challenge" (about: 2009)

This was a great little inaugural marathon. The trails were challenging but definitely worth the effort. Can't say enough about the beautiful fall scenery. The race director was very laid back and looked for any feedback to make this marathon better in the future. As this was a trail marathon, there were few spectators, but who wants screaming crowds in the middle of the forest? The aid station volunteers were enthusiast and encouraging. A few people had difficulty staying on course but I did not find that was a problem. If you are looking for crowds, a flat course and lots of fanfare, this race is not for you. Looking for adventure, quiet, serenity, beautiful colors and a challenge? This race is a definite must. Overall, a well organized, adventurous, fun marathon. I would definitely recommend this race.

"roots, rocks, mud, leaves, turns, hills, streams" (about: 2009)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 White Tail Trail Marathon

I ran the half after test running the course ahead of time. This was my first trail race after training some in the woods, but the consensus seemed to be that it's a moderately difficult trail. It starts out on pavement for a couple of miles, then has a relatively flat trail section, and then, after passing a boat ramp area, it plunges into serious trail running: Turns, hills, roots, rocks, leaves, mud, briars, fallen trees and streams. The course is challenging, and certainly so for those of us who primarily run roads. With few straight, flat sections it always seems to be throwing another hill at you. It's a strict out-and-back on a single-path trail, so you pass everyone before finishing, which can be tricky in places.

October leaves over the lake at sunrise made for a beautiful day with a crisp start (around 38F). It was a bit of a trick getting into the parking lot in the dark, but for a new race, I thought the organization was to be commended. I had no difficulty at all with course markings. HEED, water and gel were provided in places, but bring your water bottle.

Hope the White Tail runs again; if you haven't tried a trail, come out and give it a shot!

"Which way do I go?" (about: 2009)

This course is a good test. I tripped 34 times but managed to save myself from falling to the ground. A very rough trail, especially with the autumn leaves covering many roots and rocks. There was not enough "yellow flags" along the way so many of us had to backtrack. All things considered, a fun marathon.

"Great trail race" (about: 2009)

First, I ran the half-marathon option of this race (there is a full marathon and 5K option too).

I've done a lot of half-marathons and a couple of fulls, but this was an AWESOME first half trail-marathon experience. The course was beautiful and well groomed/marked, and the aid stations were well stocked. I would follow the race directors' suggestion of carrying your own water/Gatorade. I didn't care for the HEED that was offered.

Some post-race snacks were available, but selection is limited (bagels, some oranges, water, cookies).

Even after raining two days prior, the course was great to run on - not too muddy. It had some challenging areas, but great for all skill levels.

Being on trails, I didn't expect too many people, but there were quite of few people cheering at the aid stations (and they were all very friendly).

The half-marathon turned out to be 14.1 miles, but it was an enjoyable course so I didn't mind.
