"First 50K Trail Run" (about: 2015)

After running 11 full marathons, I decided to do my first ultramarathon and trail run. My first rookie mistake with a 6am start time was not having a headlamp. That error aside, this race and course (while a challenge) was a very rewarding experience. The volunteers were great. The aid stations spaced 4 miles apart were well organized with plenty of food, snacks, and other items. Most likely, I'll return next year and be better prepared, lower my time and enjoy the course.

I'm a 50 stater and I never repeat races but I ran this race last year and had so much time that I returned this year. You can read my comments from last year but trust me the best thing I can say about this race is that I've come back before I complete my 50 states.

Embrace your inner Hippie!

"One of the best running experiences ever!" (about: 2014)

As mentioned below this is a whole weekend of races featuring a 100M, 100k, 50 mile, 50K, Full marathon, half marathon, 5 mile and several free (if you ran another event) 5K's.

First, the course. It is a two loop marathon, mostly on fairly wide trails. You'll find downed trees, mud, and lots of hills, all mostly shaded. Really an incredible course. There are a million trails in this complex, with each even using different and parts of the same ones. It sounds like a reciepe for disaster, but everything was so very well marked it would have been hard to get off course.

The organization was top notch. Everything was pretty much perfect, and the most fun atmosphere ever. I highly recommend camping the entire weekend and just enjoying the running commune. We did not, but ended up staying Saturday night and sleeping in our car.

Everyone cheered everyone, and the volunteers were outstanding. Especially all the ultra runners. This was a tough course, and they all mastered it.

The medal is a very cool peace sign with a great ribbon. You also could collect little buttons for other events you participated in, like yoga, hula hooping, the natural (nude) run, etc. The natural run was the most fun of the day with free beer at the end. You can't beat that!

All in all it was one of my top 3 marathons ever.

"A little 'chaos' part of the Woodstock Experience?" (about: 2013)

Interesting experience. I wish I had joined the camping commune and stayed over (less having to drive in at 5:00am). I ran the 50K which was partly a different course than the marathon (more trail) HOWEVER, in the latter miles of the first 50K lap we ran smack into the thick of the 5 mile runners/walker horde on the hilliest part of single-track on the entire course! Annoying but not nearly as dangerous as the mountain bike rally around Richies Haven on the 2nd lap! For several miles there were a couple hundred bikers skidding head-on down the single track. Apparently both organizations were oblivious to the simultaneous events. For the most part, bikers and runners were cordial, but there were some very contentious close encounters/ wipeouts. Other than the two aid stations, there was noticeably no course control or marshalling despite all various different running events. Common finisher frills for all the different running events?

"Super fun vibe for this weekend festival" (about: 2013)

I had a blast at this event. I decided to embrace the whole weekend and not just come for the race. I would strongly encourage others to do the same. The marathon is only one race of this ultra weekend. Runners can run timed races from 5 miles to 100! Totally there were around 1600 runners (134 in full marathon and 600 in the half).

In keeping w/ the name the race organizers reserved an entire camp ground and runners are encouraged to camp Friday and Saturday nights. When not running there are pizza and lasagna dinners, yoga, tie dyeing, hikes, fun runs and continuous bands rocking out the sounds of the late 60's. So much fun!

The race is a trail race and it was my first trail marathon. I was ill prepared. I had run 2 5k trail races but they were much easier terrain. The entire race isn't run on trails since we run 5 miles on roads and cinder paths to thin out the field (which we run twice since its a 2 loop course). I can't imagine how tired I would've been had the entire race been on the trails. Since I'm a trail virgin I'm not sure how tough the real trail part actually was but to me it was challenging.

Another rookie mistake I made was not carrying a water bottle with me. There were only 7 aid stops but I noticed most runners carried a bottle and just refilled them along the way. Dumb!

Dispite the challenges and my mistakes I had fun during the race. It was pretty and almost entirely covered w/ shade. The volunteers at the aid stations were so friendly. All the stops had gatorade, water and some had gel. Most importantly the race was well marked. I've heard some horror stories told by trail runners at other races but here I heard only praise. With all the differant races overlapping on the trails it would've been very easy for runners to get confused but I didn't hear a single complaint about that.

After the race we get a great peace sign (of course) medal. After my shower I took the yoga class and tie dyed a t-shirt. I also hung around just to cheer the 100K and 100 milers finish their challenge. So inspiring!

I also took part in both of the nightime 5K's which include a 'natural' option. That is just what it sounds like and folks should throw caution to the wind and give it a go. They were both so much fun. The second night after all the positive reviews from Friday the event was packed. Beer, wine and water is part of this liberating event.

I'm going for 50 states so I never repeat races but I'm pretty sure I'll be back next year.
