"Breath taking climbs, and breath taking views" (about: 2012)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 WOW, what a trail race! This course was brutally tought and the temps were a bit warm as well. But, overall the experience was amazing. The course has a tough climb from miles 4-9 but that is where you get the best views of the day. Some quick decents then relatively flat back half marathon. There are 2 quick and tough climbs on the back side of the run but they have aid stations at the top so you get to rest briefly. The aid stations were well stocked, and the volunteers were great. No spectators on the course (thats whu I gave it a 5 star). Its a trail marathon, there should not be any spectators. Just you getting your butt through 26miles! Recommendations for runners; get some altitude training before this run. Include downhills since this really fatigues your quads. Bring a camelback/nathan back or hand-held water device. It was hot and dry out tehre and drinking only at the aid stations will not work. Overall a great experience. It was probably the toughest trail run I have ever done, but well organized and lots of fun.

"Challenging High-Altitude Marathon" (about: 2012)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Well organized. Difficult but not terrible. Only crossing a flat portion of the course where you are exposed to wind is not pleasant. LOTS of hills up and down. A lot of soft dirt. You definitely need to carry a water bottle that you can refill at every aid station. Dehydration is a concern because of the altitude, wind and low-humidity. Spectators were limited to the aids stations. They did a great job and were very helpful.

"A very scenic and challenging course" (about: 2011)
50+ previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This has to rank among the top marathons I have run. It is so beautiful in the mountains of New Mexico. This race starts at 8,000 ft elevation. From miles 3 to 10 you trek up the side of the mountain to 10,000 feet. Then it is primarily down hill to mile 19. The rises at 19 and 20 did not go as high as the first, but were equally challenging because the the grade was so steep that not only you couldn't run it, but it was difficult to walk them entirely. Much of this because of the altitude, it was difficult to ever catch your breath up there. The final 5 miles were downhill. Race organization was very good. Aid stations had all sorts of food and drink. My only two complaints about the organization: 1. No vasoline at the aid stations 2. Lack of pre-race information. Until a week prior to the race I did not know the race start time or when/where packet pick-up would be. A few tweaks and this race would be perfect. I would definitely run this marathon again.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 Really great aid stations, as they should be for a hardcore, 9,000 feet-plus trail run. Spectacular scenery and an amazingly hard course. |
