"Run in Rainwater" (about: 2014)

| 2 Run for Waters
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I did the Run For Water marathon in Abbotsford for the second time in three years on May 25, the last 18 km in pouring rain. When it started to rain, I just took out the dispensable poncho that I had been carrying in one of my sweatpants pockets and enjoyed every moment even more for the next two hours. Mind you, my bib was well hidden under the poncho. That did not deter the official photographers from taking pictures the rest of the way. They even took the trouble of identifying me despite the blue poncho and posted my pictures in one portfolio. I was really touched. This could never happen in a big race. Small the Abbotsford marathon may be in terms of entrants-less than 250-the personal touch that it gives the runners is out of this world. There are nine other reasons I prefer Abbotsford over a race 20 times its size in the Lower Mainland. 1) They have two video cameras capturing the immortal seconds as the runners cross the finish line. The image of me celebrating the climax of another beautiful journey is something for posterity. 2) The marathon starts at 7:00. On a clear day, most runners would finish before the noonday sun comes up to greet them warmly. 3) You can park close to the start/finish line. To my wife, who waited in the car for five hours, this was a luxury. 4) Soaking wet was I when I collected my medal. Within moments, though, I was literally home and dry. 5) Race-day pickup saved me a trip to the Expo and parking fees the day before. 6) No corrals at the start means not having to wait 20 minutes for my turn. 7) Running in the middle of nowhere amid the sights and sounds of nature is pure poetry. 8) With no other runner in sight half of the time, I had ample space to enjoy inner peace. 9) Running for Water, that's the spirit.

"Its actually nicer than would expect" (about: 2014)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Run for Water
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This is a small marathon. Total number of runners for 2014 was approximately 300. Despite the small number there are actually a lot of volunteers. Aid/water stations are frequent and spectators are much more than expected. The marathon runs in the farm lands around Abbotsford and the there are quite a few locals that come out to cheer you on. The scenery is nicer than you would expect. The worst thing about the marathon is the manure that some of the farms use as fertilizer. At one farm it made me want to vomit. But that was just one farm. Cows also smell some what. This race also had a 5km, 10km, 1/2 marathon being run at the same time. Near the end the 1/2 marathon course overlaps with the full. I actually enjoyed this since there were more people around at the end. The 10km course overlaps even closer to the end so there is quite the crowd at the end. The race ends with some pretty good food. Nothing fancy but bagels, chocolate milk, yogurt, chips, fruit, etc....All pretty good. There is quite the festival atmosphere at the finish. I would recommend this marathon if you are looking for a small one. I stayed at the Sandman Hotel which is close to the start/finish line. It's top notch and not expensive.

"a well organized small marathon" (about: 2012)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Run for Water
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Well-organized small marathon, they have women's size long sleeve technical shirts, medals and plaques at the finish. Generally flat or slightly rolling course winds through farms and fields. The volunteers were enthusiatic and smiley. Crowds were sparse but friendly. Do not expect too much entertainment enroute other than dairy cows and horses. The significant uphill for the last few kilometres was a bit tough. All in all, with the wonderful weather during this year race, it was quite enjoyable, would do this again some time. |
