Race Details

The Grasslands Trail Run started in 1999 and is held in the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands, more than 20,000 acres managed by the U.S. Forest Service and situated north of Fort Worth. The trails loop among rolling hills and through a mixture of pine and oak grove forests, open fields, and livestock. Run the 50-Mile, Marathon, or Half marathon and enjoy the beauty of the Grasslands while sharing the trails with horses and running past cowsdon't let the cows out!

Super organization and well-run race about 1 hour northwest of Dallas. The race description mentioned sand, and about 1/3 of the course was sandy from 1-2 inches to 6-7 inches. But the rest of the course was dirt or running through the grasslands. No spectators but the volunteers were awesome. I love small races where I can lose myself in my thoughts and the surroundings and this one checked both of those boxes.

Gentle, easy course for a first trail marathon. Very well organized and a fun event overall!

This was a very fun trail race. It was my first trail marathon. I was told to expect to fall a couple times and get lost. I did both :-) The first loop ended up being a little more confusing than the map indicated, and a few of us who were separated from the leaders ran a little extra credit. The trails are real. It's very scenic, but the terrain ranges from mud, sand, to hardened mud w/ horse tracks, to rocky, to nice packed dirt. It's a slow race, so be ready to be out there for awhile.

Enjoyed the race, the great volunteers at the aid stations and the great food after the race

Aid stations were a joke (who hands out COKE and Oreos at aid stations?!). Course was all sand, and very hilly. Beautiful area, however. Don't know that I'd run it again unless they were better organized.

"A perfect race for a strong individual runner." (about: 2011)

This race is quite an adventure. It starts out at the first crack of light in the early morning. There is maybe 80 people in the race, so after a few miles people group of into little packs. A few miles after that, racers are much more spread out and most are running individually. There are virtually no spectators, and only 4 strategically placed water stops. The course is a bit challenging, but it goes by fast. The soft dirt is easy on the feet and knees, and many parts of the trail are shaded by trees. Race organization is fine too. At the end of the race, finishers receive a small medal and free BBQ sandwich. Overall, it was a great experience and I would be glad to run this race anytime it's not raining.

This was my first trail marathon after running 21 marathons. Definitely much more difficult if you are not use to running trails. Aid stations were well stocked, volunteers were friendly, and cows were harmless. Shirt was awesome. Temperatures were very warm this year, but overall it was nice for my one and only trail marathon. You'd best enjoy your own company if you decide to run this one.
