Circling the Park by Sarasota Bay (5/15/11)

The 11-11-11 Marathon of Sarasota has it roots 1400 miles away in Northfield, MN. That is where the renowned Zoom! Yah! Yah! Indoor Marathon takes place at St. Olaf College, every January. That race is run indoors, with about 40 runners, 150 laps, and more fun that you can ever imagine.

Well, move the location outdoors, warm it up by about 80 degrees (from 20 below), and shorten the number of loops to just 58+, and you have an idea of that the 11-11-11 Marathon will be like.

It is guaranteed to be one of the most fun, most energetic, and most unusual marathons that you will ever run - and it is all about the bling. There will be 11-11-11 everywhere, a BIG finisher's medal, age groups of three people and medals for the top three in each age group, free food, and oh yes, it is in beautiful, sunny and FLAT Sarasota. Some say it is a party disguised as a marathon.

Race entry is limited to 66 entrants - 33 men and 33 women. A lottery will take place on May 23 to determine the field for this inaugural event (next year's event is on 12-12-12). To register for the lottery you must register and join the lottery group on the event's website - www.111111marathon.com .

Normal November temps are highs in in the low 70s and lows about 55. Come, run and enjoy!

(It also makes the perfect triple-weekend opportunity with easy drives/flights to Saturday and Sunday events.)

Because the course was a .44 loop, the competitors WERE the course support. We all chatted, supported one another, never a lonely moment, and able to meet EVERYONE regardless of speed. Also, one loop made Aid easy to access and pass by, and having a bathroom (not port a pot) in the middle and a DJ taking requests was awesome. So much more fun than a typical marathon.

This was my 67th marathon and one of the most fun ones. I was initially concerned the 58 loops would drive me crazy but turned out the loops were the best part, saw everyone again and again and again. Made for a fun day!

The concrete chewed up my legs and the bathrooms not being opened before the start were the only low points. But at least we could all stop at the bathroom on any of the many loops. And you could move off the concrete onto the grass for relief.

I loved all the signs along the course with information about each of the runners. Great pasta party and awesome post party!

The course did have a slight downhill by the water which wrecked havoc on my knee from going in the same direction for so many loops. And a slight uphill which by the 58th loop became a mountain.

Watermelon at the finish was a great touch! Loved it more than the pizza. The finisher and age group medals are awesome! And can't forget the extraordinary volunteers at the water stop, they were great and cheered as you passed on each loop.

Greg and Ali did a great job and made this a first class event, kudos to both. And to all of the volunteers who assisted in making this a memorable marathon.

This was a very well organized race. The RD and volunteers made this race one of the most memorable marathons I have ran to date.

The 11-11-11 Marathon of Sarasota was the farthest I've ever travelled for a race. Over 3,000 miles. It was totally worth it for the experience of the race and great memories made. Greg and Ali Goebel made each participant their top priority!

We ran in circles, but that's what made this more fun. We saw each other all day long which was a blast. Sarasota Bay was beautiful. Great hosts and great volunteers. Can't wait for next year.

I had the best time running this race. It really didn't bother me to run 58 laps because the company of the other runners, spectators and volunteers made this such an enjoyable event. The only reason I gave the course 4 stars is because of the slight slant near the water. Running that over and over in the same direction messed with my knee a bit.

I have run 74 marathons and nothing compares to the friendliness of this race. This is a race to see all of your friends over and over again (either you are passing them or they are passing you!) The race director is THE BEST! He went out of his way to make sure everyone was taken care of and had a great time. I met a lot of new friends on this course that I will keep for a lifetime. No other race will ever top this one for me! Thanks Greg Goebel!

RD Greg Goebel put on the race of the century. Made for Maniacs, and run by Maniacs. What a fun race it was. Pre race pasta dinner was held at the Sarasota Yacht Club where the RD personally called each runner to the front and gave them their race bibs. As an added touch, each runner received a back bib that listed their name, where they were from, number of Maniac stars, and number of States they have completed if they were 50 State Club members.

Race day was cool and windy for Sarasota and only glitch was the city forgot to unlock the bathrooms causing a slight delay in the start. No big deal and no one was upset about it. Just made for another story about the race. Race was held in a city park on a .44 mile concrete paved path next to the ocean. The course had plenty of shade and the ocean views were awesome. There was chip timing so the 58 laps could be accounted for. The great thing about this race was the people running it.

Where else could you run with 66 runners who are the friendliest and most fun around! The stats for each runner was amazing, from Larry Macon who has run over 700 marathons to a 70 year old who has completed over 100 marathons since he turned 70. Race times were not the fastest by average but this race was not meant to be a PR chase. It was meant to enjoy and celebrate the marathon and what running is truly about. The course had one aid station which was well stocked with great volunteers. Post race pizza and other food was provided. The medals were the best ever. Each runner got two, one for the race and one for their age group place. With only 3 in each age group, everyone placed somewhere!

And for those that were able to stay the night, the RD hosted a post race get together party at Marina Jacks, all included. Can't say how honored I am to have been able to participate in this event and the 58 loops was really not bad at all. Seeing friends over and over again was priceless. If you can get in on the 12/12/12 event do it!! You won't be disappointed!
