"211 laps for a marathon" (about: 2017)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 End of June in Virginia can be hot and humid. To run a marathon outdoor can be brutal under steaming hot condition. If you'd like to run a marathon in Virginia during summer time, an indoor marathon is the best option. The temperature was controlled to low 70s entire time for the 2017 event. The starting time was 10:00am to allow the runners to make all necessary preparation before the run. The course is a 4 lane indoor track. The ground is cement with a very thin layer of padding. The padding is good to preventing slippery; it does not provide much of impact absorbing. Each lap is 200 meter to this track. You have to run 211 laps to complete a marathon. There were about 30 runners started the race in 2017. There were about 15 volunteers to count the laps for individual runner. My lap counter is a very responsive lady. Without her help, I would get myself confused. I asked her a few times of how many laps I completed. Starting from 200 lap, she shouted out loud to encourage me to complete the marathon. I really appreciate her help. If you have trained in the track, you would know that the actual distance is measured at the inner line of a track. If you run at the middle of the track, you would run longer distance than the recorded track distance. If you try to pass a slower runner, you have to run outside track. So, the actual running distance is obvious longer than 200 meter per lap. It may not be much for each lap. A 211 times that extra distance can be significant. In addition, physics tells us that one has to spend more energy to run a curve than a straight line. For these reasons, one has to spend 10~15 minutes more for an indoor track marathon than a relatively flat road marathon. The event is well organized. I received a personal greetings right after I have registered. The organizer sent update emails to each runner, informing that who would be the other runners to this event. There was one aid station, loaded with Gatorade, water, and food. You are always less than 200 meter away from the next water station. You can stop by your own bag to fetch whatever you feel comfortable food/drink. There were volunteers to mop the floor to keep the track clean and dry. The field has an audience deck for your support team. Your supporters can keep track of every move you made to the entire run. In 2017 event, there were a few support teams there. They cheered and encouraged the other runners as well. It was a cheerful environment.

"An Odd Kind of Fantastic Fun" (about: 2014)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I like loops...even 251 of them for a 50K! This was great fun, indoors, on a 200 meter track. It was awesome to run it and also cheer on Chuck Engle, Marathon Junkie, to the win. Course was consistent. Management was low key and right on. Lap counters were involved, engaged, and accurate. The small group of fans were 'fantastic'! The DJ Chuck Williams was full of rhythm and blues...and rocked the house. And, the Marathon Maniacs were Everywhere! You cannot have a bad day indoors on a hot Virginia day. I hope to return.

"Pretty much as advertised" (about: 2013)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I had completed an indoor marathon previously(Ada, OH), so I knew what I was getting into. It's pretty hard to make 211 indoor laps exciting, but the RD did a pretty good job of keeping the music going, and the trackside announcer did a good job of trying to mention runners' names on occasion. Lots of Marathon Maniacs at this race. They had chip timing, and had a monitor set up for runners to see our times as we ran by. The only problem was that the monitor may have been too close to the sensors. I could only pick up my name 3 times in 211 laps. Perhaps if the monitor could be moved 'x' number of feet past the sensors, we would be able to see our times more often. This would reduce stress on the timing people. Overall, good job by everyone. Special mention to the manual timers who each kept track of multiple runners.
