"Good people, hard concrete" (about: 2016)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Year's Day Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

The staff and volunteers were fantastic. The fireworks medals and plate were great. The post-race food was adequate. The concrete was really tough on me. I should have trained on something other than gravel back home in Minnesota. Race time temp this year was 37 degrees - it warmed up to 45 by noon, so no complaints. The 4 laps for a full was a little bit of a psychological hurdle for me - going right next to the finish to run more laps and seeing all of the mile markers through the course was tough. I did the marathon on Day 1 and the Half on Day 2. Very glad I did it that way.

All in all, I am glad I ran this one. The organizers and the fellow runners were great.

Day two of the Double Marathon challenge. It was very cold and rained the entire time. It was my fault that I did not have waterproof gloves. Despite my own suffering, I was most impressed with the crew who stuck it out at the stations. Running back to back marathons is a serious challenge and I am glad I did it in Allen, TX. I earned my Marathon Maniacs four stars that day. Very thankful that the race was not cancelled and much respect for the volunteers who handed out drinks and snacks with a smile through freezing rain. The medals are most impressive when combined for a challenge plate. Until they learn how to control the weather or make concrete softer, you will not find a better place to run double marathons.

"Running in the New Year!" (about: 2014)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

My second completion of the Double Marathons in Allen, TX during my holiday visit from California. Multiple out and back (4 times) course on concrete walkways within a park. Event was well organized with good course support but few other spectators. Of course, it is New Year's Eve day and New Year's Day so event is for marathoners that enjoy running without all of the hoopla of a large event. The closed course does not involve any traffic control which is safe for the runners and entrances to the park have volunteers where the runnners cross. Always check the weather forecast and layer for comfort. You have close access to your car if need be. The best features are the two finishing medals mounted on a large plate. BIG Texas Bling! Thanks, Libby, RD. See you next year!

"Mind Numbingly Boring Course!" (about: 2014)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Year's Day Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

Here are the pros and cons of this race as I experienced them. (I did the NY Day marathon.)
PROS: race organization was great, plenty of close parking, started on time, beautiful race shirt, water stops were well manned.
CONS: The race course of 4 loops is so mind numbingly boring I thought I would lose my mind. One loop actually consists of a couple of loops around the park before heading out and back on the trail so I think I passed my car about 16 times. I can't imagine the people who did the marathon both days! It would help to extend the out and back by a mile or so and cut out all the looping within the park. It also got confusing with few course monitors within the park to know which way to go. Course is all on concrete so it's hard on the joints. Need more portapotties at the start. The food at the finish was dismal: pretzels, chips, water, bananas. I'm used to smaller races like this excelling in this area so I was disappointed and hungry at the finish. The marathon start is too late (almost 9:00 a.m. so many finishers are getting done after 2:00, way too late. The finisher medal for the full was disappointing. It was very plain and was the same for the half and full (even said Full/Half). If you did the double (both days) that medal 'grouping' looked GREAT. But if you just did one day, it was very disappointing. Crowds are not plentiful, but then you expect that in a smaller race like this and that doesn't bother me at all. There was no Gu or much of anything else besides water and Gatorade at the water stops.

"The absolute flattest course you will ever run" (about: 2014)

4-5 previous marathons | 2 New Year's Day Marathons
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I think there is probably, maybe, possibly one spot when, for 10-20 feet, you are technically going 'uphill'. Other than that it's severely flat - Plains flat. And given the time of year and good weather, it's easy to get a PR as such.

Race coordinator is amazing - the information drip on FB before/after the race is great and they do a great job with volunteers. And the bring? Holy smokes - it's the best anywhere!

"Well-run, simple marathon" (about: 2014)

1 previous marathon | 1 New Year's Day Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

This marathon is very well-run by the organizers. The medal (and challenge plate, if you run both) is very impressive, and I love the long-sleeve technical shirt. The course is flat, paved sidewalks, no street crossings, which is nice. It is a down-and-back loop course, so you end up covering the same area a LOT, which is a little repetitive. The spectators are pretty thin, since it's a small run, but very enthusiastic.

"It's a low key, very we'll organized ru" (about: 2014)

50+ previous marathons | 1 New Year's Day Marathon

Very we'll organized event, both days. You know what you get going into it with the multiple loops. Crowds aren't big, but this isn't a cheesy, overpriced Rock N Roll run either. Coming from an ultra background, I thought the crowds were just fine and the aid station support was very good. Overall very good , we'll put on event that I'd do again.

"Started my year off splendidly!" (about: 2014)

11-50 previous marathons | 3 New Year's Day Marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Libby (RD) is a gem. She surrounds herself with an amazing team to put together a first-class event. I was privileged to run both the NYE and NYD races the last two (or is it four?!) years...and hope to for many more to come.

The course is without any vehicle traffic and offers plenty of spots to be seen by your loved ones multiple times per lap. It's also littered with countless spectators who cheer on each and every runner as if they know 'em. The aid stations are staffed with knowledgable and cheerful folks and the announcer is amazing!

Run it!

This is a very well organized event every year. I highly recommend it for any of the distances. Anyone talking bad about it probably doesn't not have a lot of racing experience at all.
