COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 I have run 43 marathons. Increasingly I like small city events like SoJo. Easy to park; registration and pickup is a snap; volunteers are friendly and helpful; cost is low and can register a few days beforehand. First 9 miles are pretty; the last two on a bike path were OK, the rest was urban streets. Odd things: 1)much of the race was on city streets without any lane protection (you just ran on the edge of the street with traffic in your lane); 2) food was a little skimpy and limited selection. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 If you are looking for a small, local marathon, look no further than the SoJo Marathon. I found the price to be reasonable (about $88) and was able to sign up a few weeks from the start of the race. The t-shirt and finishing medal were both of high quality. The 'expo' / packet pickup was at a local rec center with no vendors. I was in an out in a few minutes. The course is actually challenging. While it does boast about 1000 feet of decline, there are also several climbs that will definitely take a toll on you. The first 10 miles or so are absolutely beautiful. You begin your run on the west side of the valley near the mining operations. It is tranquil and the race director had the roads safely closed (in fact the course was well protected from traffic). The last 16 miles or so are average at best as you run through the residential / business areas of Herriman and South Jordan. The final 2 miles are on the bike trail. The mile markers were accurate and the water / Powerade stops were as advertised. Most of the aid stations did have gels and some even had food. The volunteers were awesome and I have absolutely no complaints about the organization. The race started on time too. If you need spectators this race isn't one for you. With the exception of the finish line, there are only a handful of people cheering you on throughout the course. The post race / finish line area was adequate although not spectacular. Water, fruit, soda and ice cream sandwiches were present as well as chicken sandwiches. There also seemed to be plenty of activities for kids as well. Plenty of medical services as well. I'd definitely run this race again and would recommend it for those looking to have a well run, low stress, small / local marathon on a challenging course. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Nice, run. Chilly in beginning which is great. No sports drink at first aid station but thereafter yes. Several miles downhill, then an uphill where you regain most of that altitude, then downhill alternating with flat, ending with 1-2 miles flat when its getting warm. Fell apart here but BQ'd because was right on the cusp of the age group. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 1 I ran the SOJO Marathon in 2013 and had a mixed experience. It is a fairly new race, and a small race, about 250 runners when I participated. The race begins near the Kennecott Copper Mines and winds through very small towns and rural areas. They could have used a few more porta potties (what race starting line couldn't), but they started on time, which earns them points in my book. There were almost no spectators, which is to be expected from a rural race of this size. That said, there were plenty of volunteers on the course to make sure runners never had to contend with traffic on cross streets, which I appreciated. The aid stations had a variety of food and drinks (trail mix, bananas, gel, Power Aid and water), and the volunteers were friendly. Some of the aid stations do lose a few points in my book for not having the water ready. They made us stand there while they filled the cups from the Coleman jugs. It wasn't that they were busy - just that they waited until runners reached them to prepare the cups. That cost me precious seconds, and though I'm slow, I still care about doing my best. This is just a training issue and it can be fixed. I hope the race director does a better job in the future educating volunteers about how to run an aid station. The course itself was a gentle downhill for most of the way, with a 1 1/2 mile hill starting at about mile 6. A few parts were quite scenic, but for the most part I found it unremarkable (lots of running through cookie cutter McSubdivisions) especially compared to some of Utah's other spectacularly breathtaking races. My real disappointment with this race was the finish line. When we crossed, near the back of the pack but well within the cutoff time, there was silence. The announcer was having a conversation with someone and didn't even say our names. We had to track down a volunteer and ask for our medals because she was busy eating a sandwich. There was one banana left and my friend and I had to dig around under a table to find a bottle of water (the volunteers were nowhere to be found). My friend commented that it was the worst finish line experience she'd ever had, and I have to agree. If we had not finished within the allotted time, this would be understandable, but we were well within the limits. We were bummed, and probably will not run this race again. |
