"Small, Scenic and Super Hot/Humid" (about: 2012)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This is not your typical marathon and definitely should not be your first. The run was well organized and very small - probably less than 20 people. Runners looking to run a double may want to do this run, which is on the Saturday preceding Sunday's MAD marathon. The course is rural, very scenic and hilly, at least if you are from the NYC metro area like me. I number of farm animals that I saw and hills that I ran surpassed the number of spectators by a large factor. Indeed, I remember passing less than 10 supporters, although I was somewhat bonked by 20 given the hills and 2012 heat and humidity (possibly I missed some in my daze). As mentioned, the race is organized very well. What was lacking was made up for by the efforts of a small army of volunteers. For example, there weren't true water stops on the course, but there were volunteers traveling the course with fluids available for the runners. As you might guess from its name, the race has a Mormon flavor to it. However, across the packet pick-up, race, and finish area conversations, I experienced nothing but friendly folks - none asking about my spirituality. Well done, Joseph Smith Memorial! |
