"Disappointed" (about: 2023)

They pulled several runners at mile 22 because of possible storm coming. It did not happen.

"Great course for a fast time" (about: 2019)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Athens Marathon (Ohio)

This course is great for a fast time. It is almost entirely on a bike path and is almost entirely flat. Seems like there might be an ever so slight decline on the bike path coming back to the finish. I was worried about congestion on the path but that was totally not an issue. I think a course like this with few turns and just straight out and back is the best type of course to run a fast time. There are few spectators, and for my age group award I received a pair of really cheap sunglasses (like the ones they give out for free at a lot of races) but I don't care about any of that. I came for a fast course and that's what I got. I would definitely recommend this course if you are out for a fast time.

"Flat, kinda scenic, inexpensive, good aid stations" (about: 2017)

My 4th time here. Small town with large state university. Interesting restaurants and things to do. Entry fee and lodging very inexpensive: bang for your buck! Terrific farmer's market the day before.

"flat course, small low key event" (about: 2017)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Athens Marathon (Ohio)
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

This was a low key, small town marathon but it was 26.2+. I'm not sure what/if there was a 'host hotel' for the event but I stayed close by anyway. Since it is a small town its best to make arrangements when you sign up for the race. Getting around Athens is easy, its a small town. Best advice is to just park around the college campus and walk to where you need to be. Pkt pick-up was easy at the Ohio Valley Running Company. There was no expo, just well organized and quick pkt pick-up. The men's race shirt was a very nice half zip pullover. Race day weather was cool but perfect for running. There was not much fanfare to the start. Maybe something like a 5 minute til race start warning or playing/singing the national anthem would add to the start. Also, there was no gear drop but parking around the finish area was encouraged so it was not necessary. The first couple miles were through side streets to get on a bike path. The path was in good shape but had plenty of tree debris on it. It was flat with little crowd support but the volunteers did a decent job handing out Gatorade and/or water. There were a couple porta-potties on the course. I realize it is a low key event but I thought gel should have been given out at a couple different spots on the course, even if it was just for us marathoners. The last couple miles of the course seemed long and we came off the paved course into the OU campus where we entered the track. At the point where we entered the track my watch, as many others, already read 26.2. Once I crossed the finish I was at 26.38. Finisher medals were very nice and finish line refreshments were ok at best...pizza, choc milk, maybe some fruit. No, I wouldn't run it again since I don't run the same marathon twice but even if I did I doubt if I'd run it again.

"Beautiful, scenic, and fast, small-town marathon" (about: 2017)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Athens Marathon (Ohio)
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I really had a lot of fun with this marathon. It was small, less than 200 runners, in the full. The weather was beautiful this year, and it starts out on the historic, Ohio U campus, and then winds it way through an off the beaten path bike trail. Some rolling hills. Great water stop support. I had the best time here. Not a lot of crowds, but if you are looking for a fast, small marathon, you might want to consider this one. I think the race director did a fantastic job.

"Fast, boring course" (about: 2015)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Athens Marathon (Ohio)
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

In general, I was happy with the race however there's room for improvement. At the very end, the course turns from the bike path, across some grass to the finish on the track. That grass was like a swamp and slowed down my finish by about 5 seconds. I was 4th overall, and first Master, in the race but only won a generic coffee mug, which I had to pick up from a shack. No awards ceremony. If you arrive the Saturday before and find the streets full of drunken zombies, don't worry, it's a college town. They'll all be dead asleep at race time.

"As close to Boston As I've gotten." (about: 2016)

50+ previous marathons | 1 Athens Marathon (Ohio)

It was a brisk spring morning with a few snow flakes falling. I like the start downhill from downtown to a bike path. The out and back was very flat and runners were sparse after the half turn-around. I was running well so the monotony of the course never set in. The aid stations were plentiful well stocked and staffed. The mile markers seemed dead on. I was on pace for BQ but losing steam around mile 20. I battled on almost afraid to look at my watch. The wind was picking up but it was a cross wind so it neither helped nor hindered. Then with a half mile to go the course turned left into the wind and at mile 26 the finish line seemed somewhat further than .2 miles. alas my Garmin read 26.38 as I crossed the finish at 3:42:38 ....2:38 over my BQ time. As I walked to my truck second guessing my decision to drive the 190 miles to the race the morning of a tear slid down my cheek. 85th time was not a charm.

Run was great but trying to find my time sucks. Been trying to find my time for 20 mins and it just keeps taking me to home page.

Great shirt, lots of aid stations with porta-johns. Flat rail bed trail. No spectators to speak of. The weather is usually good. This year it was 25 degrees at the start. Too cold

"Very Well Organized" (about: 2015)

6-10 previous marathons
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

This was my 6th Marathon and since it was only 45 minutes from the house I decided to give it a try. It was a very small, organized, fun race on a long bike trail. The scenery out and back was good, water stops were at every mile, well stocked with cold water & Gatorade, banana's & oranges. Medals were nice. Dave and I stopped at Booney's after the race for a few cocktails. There were a lot of college kids in there already with the same idea. Very good Marathon and would recommend it.
