"Tough but awesome" (about: 2018)

This race was wonderful. Very well supported. I personally enjoy loops as you have support often and do not need to carry anything with you.

I did the 24hour so carrying things can add extra weight you don't need.

The volunteers are incredibly helpful and supportive. I even had some offer to do loops with me. I needed 45 in total to reach 100km.

There are not many spectators, but the ones who are there cheer you on and are also awesome because they want you to finish just as much as the person they are there to support.

The hill is not large. Even towards the end when I was shuffling my feet in pain I didn't even notice it.

If you are a trail runner I don't think this hill will bother you at all. If you run roads I'm sure hitting it over and over will start to add up.

One of the things at the aid station that I thought was different was how they pre packed baggies of food. Like chips, pretzels etc. It was actually very helpful because you could grab and go and eat throughout the loops without spending tonnes of time at the aid station.

Weather this year was beyond hot. I think with humidity felt like 40. In sept not common but the RD provided us with ice bandanas and they were amazing and really helped us get through those temps.

Overall would highly recommend this race. Well supported and put together ;)

"Unique Challenge" (about: 2017)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 That Dam Hill Marathon

I ran the 2017 Dam Hill marathon event.. woah what a marathon.

This is a 18.5 lap course ending with a hill for each lap.

I was worried about the loop concept being redundant prior to running it; however, the loop was totally fine. It actually helped in breaking down the time and distance remaining.

The course is relatively flat with some slight incline / downhill for a small stretch.

The actual 'dam hill' is at the end of each loop and quite the challenge.

For the first approx. 22 K, I was way on pace for my goal time of 4:12 / not allowing the hill to slow me down.. But as I began to tire my recovery times were gradually getting longer. Then for the last ten - I was really hating that dam hill...hhaha

Although I didn't get a PB I am quite pleased with my finish time considering the hill repeats. I (personally) would not recommend this course for a personal best but rather a damn good challenge!

It is truly unique and the organization is top-notch, with a super friendly community in London. The hoodies in the bib packets were awesome - I can't wait to sport mine. Also we were given ice packs for our necks which immediately cooled me down on a hot September day. A lot of thought and detail went in to the organization which I appreciated.

I can't say enough how much I would recommend this race. It is truly a one of a kind race, with a challenging (but entirely feasible) hill, amazing small town feel and a truly rewarding experience. I can't wait to run it again in the future. Every runner should go for it!!!

"Fantastic Organization. Utterly fantastic." (about: 2017)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 That Dam Hill Marathon

It was my first time running a 'small marathon' (referring to size of field, of course - not distance!) - so I wasn't sure what to expect.

The organization was fantastic. The volunteers were soooooo incredibly friendly. The aid station had everything I could want and more.

The only downside was the weather - Mother Nature decided to turn up the blast furnace. Not the organizers' fault.

Like reviewers from previous years, I gave 'spectators' a 3. There are none. So if you need the roar of the crowd, this may not be the marathon for you. Otherwise, it is top-notch.

I ran my first marathon here and loved it. Concerned about the hill at first but it wasn't a bad hill. I thought I'd get bored by the same course for 19 laps but I didn't, and it was a beautifully maintained and scenic track. The volunteers were extremely friendly and helpful, more than enough food/water/gatorade, chips, sandwiches, candy, pizza too. Very organized. 10/10 Highly recommend!

"Nice loop course" (about: 2017)

The marathon is at a nice park, which you run 19 total loops with the marathon. Yes there are a couple of hills including one right after the dam, but nothing too tough. It was very well organized and the course was very pretty. It did get a little humid and warm, but I thought the volunteers did a great job at the aid station and finish line. I did have heat issues after I finished and they helped me get back to normal. My kids loved the playground at the park. I highly recommend this marathon. Very good food at the end, and great SWAG items.

I too had some concerns about doing 19 laps - but have done a few like this before so knew what to expect. Short 1.4 mile lap means you are at aid station regularly - great support - had water Gatorade soft drinks - food wise - had little baggies of cheesees - chips - PB sandwiches - Cheese sandwiches - timing was good - big TV screen for each lap - get your lap time and totals each time - had the little ice packs for the neck if needed - rained pretty much the entire day - will try to make it back there next year - great job - end of race - had pizza and bagels and chips.

Great small town feel even in a city! The small circuit is great, allowing people to see you 19 times and great for getting supplies. I thought the hill was going to kill me but I loved it. I will be back. So good.

"Awesome race to meet your long distance goals!" (about: 2016)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 That Dam Hill Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I wanted a race that was close to home and same day race kit pick up (I drove 2 hours the morning of) I came across 'that dam hill' by searching google. I read some comments and knew this was the race that would get me to my goal of 50km. We looped springbank park 23 times to meet this goal...the park is gorgeous, looping was not a problem when u r surrounded by the gorgeous scenery that nature has to offer! The aid station was fully stalked with a buffet lol...the people always asked us if we needed anything, my friend ended up getting Tylenol! I liked how every time we looped it showed us our name and mileage and how many laps we completed. Awesome event! I will be back!

"Good Course, friendly atmosphere, good aid station" (about: 2016)

4-5 previous marathons

First time running a 24 hour looped (1.4 mile) course. For me, these ultras are a matter of survival, not setting course records. Thought it would be boring but found it was nicely laid out. Psychologically there were enough ups and downs and markers along the way where you could keep motivated by saying ok if I just get to xxx then I have a downhill or an aid station and that will be easy for a while. Liked friendliness of staff/ volunteers and other runners, encouragement of spectators, well stocked aid stations, real washrooms.
