Race Details
This is a trail race. Entrants run four counterclockwise loops of superb single track trail to complete the marathon. The trail is almost completely shaded with many twists and turns. There are few rocks on the trail, but there are plenty of roots on the very run-able trail.

"A friendly and well organized trail marathon" (about: 2014)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is a trail marathon and half in (near) Memphis, TN. It was the first year for this race and also my first trail marathon so, I thought it would be a good match. The course is a 6.5 mile loop that you repeat (2 or 4 times for half of full). I have never done a trail marathon, so I really don't know how typical or good or bad the course is compared to others, but I liked it. The first half of the loop is pretty easy and flat, the second had quite a few more turns and hills, but Memphis is not a hilly area, so nothing was too tough (well one was pretty nasty - but in a good way). Good: 1. Race director. Everyone was nice and got to know you. Sure it was tiny (16 full finishers) but the organizers still could have been aloof. The race director personally greeted you by name every time through the loop. He gave you updates on your time and provided good feedback and personal encouragement. On my second time through the loop he commented, 'Way to go Jonathan, amazing consistency, your first two loops were the same time, you are doing awesome.' That may not be an exact quote, but it's pretty close. 2. Aid stations - There were 3 aid stations on each 6.5 mile loop (so about every 2 miles) and they were well stocked with both food and volunteers. 3. Volunteers. I think the volunteer to runner ration was about 1:3-4. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. 4. Course. See above for other course comments, but it was also very well marked. I had never been to this course before but it was still very easy to follow. Bad: Nothing was bad. Maybe two recommendations though: 1. It would have been hard to do given the size, but maybe some warm food at the end (it was a very cold day). But the hot coffee at the finish was great. 2. Also, consider adding a few extra trash receptacles along the course or move the trash further away from the aid stations. They said we could just through the cups on the trail and they would pick them up, but regardless, I just inherently can't through trash on a nature trail, even if I know it will be picked up. This was a great race. I want to thank the race director and all volunteers immensely. This was a great race. I had an amazing time and would like to run this race or another from this director and group again. |
