Nice small marathon (plus other distances). Great as a training run for the Fall marathons. Had race day registration and package pick-up - NICE!

-Course: Scenic and diverse with small rolling hills. 3 out and backs: 1) nice run thru a wooded park on a paved path, then onto a single-track trail (rooty, but easy); 2) out to the bright sunshine on a paved bike path along Lake Michigan with nice views of the lake and Milwaukee skyline; 3) repeat #1.

-Support: simple aid stations with water, Gatorade and grapes.

-Post-race: a little lacking with water, pancakes, and choice of drink (beer, soda). Don't recall seeing any other food.

-Swag: nice technical shirt, OK medal

-Overall: It's convenient if you live in the area. I drove in and out from Chicago area the same day. I really liked the course (although too many out and backs). Since I live in the area, I would do it again.

This was a smaller size race in a large city (metro-Milwaukee). In addition to the marathon, they offered a half-marathon, 20 miler, and a 50K. And they started early. The first wave was the 50K runners at 6:00 a.m. Marathoners started at 6:30 and half-marathoners at 7:00. Since the 20 miler folks were not timed with the mats, etc. they had flexibility to start with the group they wanted to run with. It was nice the way they did it because there was not a traffic jam at the start-line.

The park was along the shoreline of Lake Michigan just south of Milwaukee. Parking was in the neighborhoods adjacent to the start-line area and some were able to park along the roads that entered the park. The course consisted of two loops; one to the south and the other north of the picnic area where the start and finish line were located. The loop to the south was kind of a modified out and back, mostly following a paved bike/foot path heading south. At the turn-around point, we were on a paved road, then stayed on that road for part of the return. Then part was on the same bike/foot path, and then there were 3 or 4 times where we actually went into the woods on a dirt, single file foot-path, always reconnecting with the paved trail. The end of the south loop had us back at the start/finish line picnic area. Then we did a loop to the north (toward Milwaukee) which was an out and back on the same bike/foot path we were on from near the start. The turn-around point of the north loop was also the mid-way point of the marathon course. Returning to the start/finish line area, we did the south loop a second time. It was novel.

It was a good course. The running surface was adequate, but there were exposed roots on the dirt trail part that were trip hazards, and there were some shear drop-offs near the lake, while on the dirt path, that probably should have had safety rails. There were also other people using the paved trail while the race was in progress, but I was never aware of any conflict. The course to the south except the mile closest to the picnic area, was mostly shaded and cool. The loop to the north was mostly exposed to the sun and there was no cloud cover in the morning. So that part got pretty hot. I was glad to have used sun-screen in the morning.

There were hydration stations at the picnic area, the turnaround points, and a couple more in the middle part. So we passed the same stations multiple times. They had plenty of fluids available. Some stations had protein bars, bananas, and the one in the picnic area had Clif-shot gel too. The volunteers were cordial and friendly.

The post-race had water, and each runner got a beverage (Gatorade, soda pop, or beer) and then there were chips, Clif-bars, and bagels too. I did not see any bananas at the finish line. That would be a good addition for next year.

Again, this was a smaller size race I think 131 marathoners finished, plus those from the other three races being hosted. The course was good, and you got to see a lot of Lake Michigan too. And near 80 degrees, it was on the warm side, but there was still lots of shade on the course too, and cooler temperature prevailed in the shade.

Packet pickup on race day was hassle free. Great parking close and free.I loved the marathon course that was well marked and the volunteers were very helpful. Which had to be hard on a 90 degree day. The medal and t-shirt were very nice. The after race brat and beer really hit the spot.
