Race Details

The Brazos Bend 100 Miler is the fastest race in Texas and the NATION with its mostly flat course, easy aid stations and wildlife to watch its the perfect set up for some PRs and some records to be set.

Wildlife is diverse and abundant. The white-tailed deer is the largest of more than 25 different species of mammals present, which also include bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, gray and red foxes, river otters, feral hogs and several species of rodents. Approximately 21 species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded, and the smaller turtles, lizards, snakes and frogs are overshadowed in general interest by the American alligator, which is present mainly in the wetland areas of Elm, 40-Acre and Pilant lakes. (Feeding/harassment of wildlife is prohibited.) Birds of 290 species have been sighted in and around the park. The diverse habitat is a haven for migratory waterfowl, a variety of shorebirds, wading birds, songbirds and raptors.

"'Easy' trail race, well-organized" (about: 2018)

The park was surprisingly nice, and the course is super-flat. Marathoners have to do two loops, 50 milers do three, and 100mi runners do it six times. There are some out-and-back sections on each loop, so you may get too familiar with some sections.

If the course is dry, you can do it with regular running shoes, but I'd recommend trail shoes (esp if there's been any rain). The course was muddy in 2018 due to heavy rain.

It's a great course for anyone trying their first marathon/50mi/100mi.

Pros:
The aid stations were well-stocked with food.
The course is well-marked.
Its a nice, flat course. I saw a bunch of birds but didn't get to see any gators.
People are friendly
The race organizer was great. He's very responsive to questions via Facebook and was giving high-5s to runners as they finished each loop.
They have lots of swag for sale.

Cons:
The 'ugly Christmas sweater' t-shirt is different; I wish that it were long-sleeve and made from better material, either a technical shirt or just a better cotton (it's a bit rough).
There was no food at the end of the race (aside from the aid station there). Something more substantive (pizza, burgers, etc) would've been great, esp for the ultra runners.
There are no age-group awards.
There isn't much crowd support (which wasn't surprising, but anyone who's used to doing larger road races may find that disappointing)

Overall great trail run.

Would mention more about muddy sections of race course, usually expected.

Also the park entry cost is per person and not per vehicle.

Glad to have been a part of the experience at Brazos Bend State Park.

"Love the scenery but organization lacking." (about: 2014)

Great course and great scenery in the park. A different environment for someone from the Northeast. Two issues, however. First, course was poorly marked in some places leading to confusion and some people cutting corners. Second, water stations were dry by the time I got to the ~20 mile mark (about 3.25 hours in). Finished pretty parched and probably cost me a few minutes. If you do this race, study the map thoroughly before you race so that you know the course well.
Otherwise, lots of fun.
