"Fast flat course" (about: 2015)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 The Buckeye Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 1 Course is flat I thought (compared to all other courses I've been on). The only set back was the out and back portion about midway - too many tight turns. Last mile probably the worse part (off-road uneven surface). Upon finishing, it got cold and windy pretty quick; also, it was extremely cold inside the van/bus I rode back on to the starting line (driver seemed to have the air conditioner running in spite of the cold weather). Overall, this has to be the best marathon course I've been on (qualified for B/M). Certainly a fair course, but would be nice to have organizers get rid of the out and back and do something about the last mile (wishful thinking I guess). Thank you to all the volunteers, the police, the nice people of the town of Buckeye and organizers.

"Run it smart for a BQ" (about: 2015)

| 2 The Buckeye Marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Small local race, good if you'd rather avoid PF Chang's. Cute swag bags and overall better organized than last year. Volunteers at the expo and along the course deserve big kudos. Course has a couple easy downhill miles early on, then long but very gradual uphill stretches through mile 15. Not hard on the quads, but something to be aware of if you're pacing to BQ. Miles 21-25 are downhill and super fast, so save your legs. Tough sections of the course are miles 16-17, when you merge with half marathoners running a pace 1-3 min/mile slower than you, and then at mile 25 you have to run on a rutted soft shoulder to stay inside the cones. If these two sections were corrected, I would give the course 4 stars. No big cheering crowds here, but a friendly, well-organized, fairly fast race in cool weather. The city of Buckeye seems committed to making this a better event each year.

"Not downhill" (about: 2015)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 The Buckeye Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 I agree with all who said the course went uphill to mile 15. Actually miles 2 and 3 were downhill and I was running a better pace. Then it went uphill. It wasn't an optical illusion. It slowed down by about 30 seconds a mile. Miles 21 to the finish were downhill. Other problems for a race advertised as a Boston Qualifier: No mat at the start although one was used for the finish. But the bigger issue was the five mile out and back. There were two young females handing out drinks at the turnaround, but no timing mat and no one watching. People could have easily turned around and cut the course. That needs correcting.

"Small town marathon with a lot of heart" (about: 2014)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 The Buckeye Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 Less than a 100 runners for the A to B marathon. Thus few spectators along the way. Water stops every 2 miles was a bit sparse especially with kids (ages about 8 to 10) handing the small cups out. No 13.1 mile marker. Asphalt in Arizona has pretty wide cracks. These are small things. Volunteers cooked breakfast at the start for the spectators. Lots of booths at the end. The medal is very cool. The course is flat and down hill. My Garmin 910 had the first half at 76 feet up and 391 feet down. Total was about a 1,000 down and 350 up for a net 650 down. The road appeared to rise more than it did. A local running next to me explained this is an optical illusion. But it sure felt like more of rise. Most of the course is on a single road which is nice. The views of the mountains in the distance are spectacular and kept your head up staring at them. (I'm from out of town) At mile 16 we merged with the half marathoners. They started an hour later and were on mile 5 at the merge. Most were significantly slower than the marathoners causing the weaving to begin right when it was most painful. Of course passing lots of runners at the end of marathon helps with the ego. It is a great marathon.

"regarding course description" (about: 2014)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 The Buckeye Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 Billed as a downhill and fast marathon. 75% approx. of the course had a gentle uphill. I ran with several others and we can all verify this. There is a listed elevation drop of 600 feet, but there's no way. The course needs to be re measured. False advertisement. I spoke with a dozen or so runners who said the same thing. It's not a bad course. It needs to be advertised the right way.

"Small, low-key marathon" (about: 2014)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 The Buckeye Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 Inaugural year for this race, so of course a bit of room for improvement. Not the race for you if you like lots of hoopla, but if you're used to ultras you'll like the low-key vibe. Positives: Friendly volunteers 8 AM is a late start for a marathon, but we were lucky with the weather this year. It could have been super warm, or it could have dumped rain (which was in the forecast) but it was cool and the rain was done. Didn't have to worry about car traffic, since much of the race was on a parkway. Cops did a fine job at later intersections. Nitpicky items: Nice that they allowed day-of-race bib pick-up, but it was tense when I was told my name was checked off so someone else must have picked up my bib. Fortunately this was cleared up quickly. The course isn't tough, but isn't a super fast downhill shot (for that look to the Tucson or Phoenix Marathons). This one is best described as gently rolling in most areas. Not a quad killer and can be a PR course, but just don't expect long stretches of fast downhills. Gel at the aid station mile 16 was a bit tricky to get to as there were half marathoners running in the opposite direction. Had to cut in and I dropped my gel. Should have brought my own. Lack of food left for the full marathoners at the finish (milers and half marathoners must have taken off with a lot of it). Confusion as to where to pick up my drop bag. Didn't like wandering around getting chilled trying to find it. The duffle bag they gave out is a nice concept, but has the date of next year's race (oversight or an advertising method?) and the prongs on the finishing medal broke quickly. Couldn't hang my AG award on it. Kind of a downer for a race that costs close to $100. Awards: why not announce the first place male and female right away? Marathon awards seemed an afterthought once the mile and half marathon awards were given out. This marathon seemed to attract some speedy runners and a bunch of out-of-staters for such a small inaugural race (marathon field was probably only 130 total). Many were probably hoping to BQ or improve their BQ times. If you don't need a lot of crowd support or spectators, this is a fine race, but tweaks will need to be made to keep marathoners returning.

"Well Organized but Not as Advertised" (about: 2014)
2 previous marathons
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Being an inaugeral marathon added to the other distance it was very small for the marathoners (about 100). All of that was fine for me and my daughter. Good value for the entry fee. Two problems with the course. 1. It was advertised as fast and flat with a 640ft drop. That was EXTREMELY overstated. First 2/3 of course was very rolling with not steep but long in length inclines. No one could leave this course thinking it was a flat and downhill course. 2. There was a ribbon turnoff from the main course and it has a million turns which psychologically deflating for the turnaround.
