First off, I am from central Illinois, the land of all things damn flat, making training for this race a bear. Knowing that ahead of time, my goal was to finish and knock PA off the 50 states list and I decided to do this by challenging myself on the first lap and then go into finish mode for the second lap. After watching so many people face-plant and come up bloody from wiping out on loose rocks, this plan seemed quite wise.

This course is not for the faint of heart, I was told when I picked up my packet that there were 60 registrants for the marathon, only 30 finished. This is a very tough course.

The people that were out at the water stops were awesome. At one stop, there was a fire and the guys were saying that they should have brought their marshmallows as they had the years before. Pretzel sticks were everywhere as well as Gatorade and water. The views from the tops of the ski runs down to the ski lodge are inspiring to say the least and when you run the abandoned airstrip you'll swear you can see a million miles.

The terrain is very diverse, sometimes you're on pavement and you'll hang a 90 degree turn and start zig-zagging down a double black diamond mountain biking trail for miles on end only to have to jump down a 4-5' embankment, turn right 90 degrees and start crawling up a fire access road that is more like a cliff than the crushed limestone road you wish it was. The ski run that you climb up on mile 12 and 24 is comical in it's steepness, I saw no-one even attempt to run any of it, but isn't that the point of this race? To see what you're made of? To see if you can finish?

Easily the hardest marathon I've ever run and I would gladly go back and do it again!!

"A Challenging Beast!" (about: 2015)

I should have known when the words 'marathon' and 'mountain' were put together that this would be a difficult course but I had no idea it would be as challenging as it was.

An elevation map is on the website but it by no means does the course justice. You start with a nice paved downhill for about half a mile then the fun begins.

You literally run up a ski slope for the next mile or so before eventually getting to the top of the mountain and hitting the trails. And these aren't the rail/trail C&O canal tow path trails. These are real deal mountain hiking trails with all of the natural rocks and roots to go with them. About two miles of this mostly uphill.

Then finally to some pavement. I have never enjoyed running on pavement so much! A road then an old airstrip runway to a gravel/dirt/muddy road for 3 miles or so then back to the trails.

Literally looking down almost the whole time as getting your feet down on the single track trails without breaking an ankle on the rocks and roots was a challenge in itself. At least the trail was heading downhill. That was a nice 3 or so miles. Then you bottom out.

And the climb to the top begins again. Gravel/dirt/mud climb for about a mile then it leveled off a bit then you hit the mother of all hills. I don't know if it was a black diamond ski slope or not but, it had to be. Almost straight up at the top man. You could not run. You could barley lean into the mountain and walk up as the dirt and rocks were so slick and the incline so steep.

Finally make it to the top, run around a pond and ascent quickly down to the finish. Very slick on the rocks and damp grass ski slopes down but what a view of the valley and lodge below! And that was lap one. Yep, we fullers got to do it again!

It was nuts. It was great. It was maddening at times but what a challenge! I was literally mad at the mountain the second time I went up that steep ski slope. I guess I was really mad at myself for not training more.

It was my 8th marathon, only one with real trails, and definitely the most rewarding upon finishing! My wife did the half and felt the same way.

I recommend it very much but obviously do some hill training before you take this beast on!
