COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I travelled from Ireland to take part in this event and am so glad I did. The organisers went out of their way to help me and the organization leading up too and on the day itself was A Plus. The course itself is challenging but the scenery is spectacular- unlike any race I have run. To add to it's charms the aid stations were manned by kids from the area who gave up their Saturday to help us out and cheer us on. Very low key event but would highly recommend.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 An amazing experience to be able to run in this race. The course is beautiful - completely within the national park. Very well organized and small enough to be very friendly. All water stops were enthusiastic and well done. Plan on 30 min drive to and from hotel and there is an active train track that you will need to drive across to reach buses to start.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 Difficult course, but gorgeous. Very small but with fantastic organization, and focus on each runner. 15 water stops for the marathon with enthusiastic volunteers at each. I would recommend this race for everyone.

"Most Special Attention of Any Race I have Ran" (about: 2016)

| 1 Petrified Forest Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I loved the course for its beauty and challenging hills but the people were what made this marathon extra special. It felt like a training run with my own coach, making sure my needs were met during the entire course. Unfortunately because of a flight delay, I didn't get to experience the pasta dinner pre-race night. However, I did get to experience the post-race Enchilada dinner. The food and the great conversation with the owner of the Wig Wam Motel and her family (also organizers of the race) was a wonderful experience. They were so friendly and eager to get information to help improve next year's race. The only thing that I would suggest to improve this race is to provide more information on their website, including a break-down of the race results (men, women, age-groups). Some people may prefer something different for the shirt but I liked it myself. I liked the medal too. This is a great race for 50-staters and anyone who enjoys a beautiful scenery, spending time with great people! I also highly recommend the Wig Wam Motel.

"Great small town marathon" (about: 2016)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 What a great experience, the nicest race director in the world, welcomed each runner with open arms. A homestyle pasta dinner was offered for a small donation the night before the race. The high school volunteers were awesome, not many spectators but beautiful views in every direction. For a small town race it was well organized. Thank you!

"Excellent, small marathon" (about: 2015)

| 1 Petrified Forest Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This is a Boston Qualifying, point-to-point, small marathon. There were less than 100 starters, but the field at the front was very competitive. There were no spectators along the course, but the water stops were plentiful and staffed with great volunteers. The race director placed some humorous, entertaining signs along the way and toured the course making sure everyone was okay. Hey, this is the petrified forest! Fantastic wide open views in all directions along the route. When you are done, drive the route and check out all the stops in the national forest it is fantastic! Make sure you bring your camera. Oh, the winners, trophies are beautifully polished cross-sections of petrified logs. I am a 3:35 marathoner, but I finished this one in 3:41 (good enough for a BQ). There are some challenging hills (which helped me win the 50+ age group, but not by a lot). I think this is a great marathon for beginners all the way to someone wanting an age group or outright win. And I have to say, I stayed at the Wigwam hotel - thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. |
