"a race of two halves" (about: 2011)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I especially enjoyed it because I got my PB (although this may be due to me doing more training than usual). All in all, the organisation was great; well marshalled, ample water stations with energy gels and isotonic. The first half was very scenic and a bit hilly but I think it's better to have the hills at the start. There were also pace makers to help you keep on track. It seemed to get a bit lonely at half way though as about 80% of the athletes chose to do the half marathon and we split from them just after 12 1/2 miles. The pace makers also finished then. Apart from being flatter the second half of the race was further out of the centre with not as many landmarks. I've seen other comments mentioning the wind and because this section is more out in the open I really struggled at miles 20-25 when I had to run/walk into a strong headwind. The finish was well organised too, but the goody bag wasn't the best I've ever had. The medal was impressive but if you wanted a T-shirt you had to pay extra for it. I would say it was one of the more enjoyable marathons I have completed and would consider running it again.

"tough 1st 10 miles up hill..and strong winds" (about: 2011)

| 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Really tough hilly start...strong winds hindered the flat route. Not a race to achieve a PB,though surprisingly I did. Narrow path slows down your pace considerably. Crowd wonderfully encouraging. Plenty of hydration stations situated on narrow paths...not ideal.Wouldn't run it again.

"Extremely well run event" (about: 2010)

| 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon, and it was such a memorable experience that I am looking forward to many more. The organization was spot on. Ample drinks stations, many times on both sides of the road and well spread out to allow for plenty of room. Isotonic drinks were always available as were gels at some stops, although I brought my own GU gels since that is what I am used to. Support along the course was great and the people of Nottingham were fantastic. Perfect weather for the start. The course is really nice for the first half with a few small hills. The second half takes you out of the town center and it got a little windy, but not too bad. Great last mile when you cross the bridge and can hear the crowd at the finish. Overall, a first-rate marathon. Highly recommended.

"Great 1st Half" (about: 2009)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The first half of this marathon is fantastic (although very hilly in parts) and shows Nottingham off really well, especially around Wollaton Park, and the university, and along the Trent with good levels of support. The second half is a bit boring, with quiet country lanes and a long back-and-forward stretch at the National WaterSports Centre, although it's completely flat and support is very sparse. The organization is really good, with motorcyclists taking unused water forward to the next water stations. Water stations were plentiful and well stocked. Very very well organized indeed. I would definitely do this marathon again.

"Race of two halves" (about: 2008)
11-50 previous marathons
| 3 Robin Hood Marathons
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 I ran this twice in the early 90's and again yesterday (September 14, 2008). The nature has not changed much, but the organization is better. The first half is in town - there was lots of support, but it was too hilly for my liking. The second half goes out of town, around a rowing lake, and back again. There were lots of drink stations - great, but a little too many extra loops made it feel like the organizers were struggling to add miles on to the half. I would rather run to somewhere and back than to keep doubling back on little loops. As a previous comment said - it's worth doing, but not worth traveling a long way for.

"Very good half marathon" (about: 2008)

| 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I ran the Robin Hood Half for the first time today. What a super race. The course is "undulating" (in fact, some bits are plain hilly), but on the whole this adds to the challenge. It's an attractive route through the university, by the castle, Woolaton Park and by the River Trent. Organization was very good on the day - plenty of drinks and a good race start and finish site. You got a medal or plaque, as well as a goody bag. I'll give this another go next year.

"An excellent mid-size half. A good full marathon." (about: 2007)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This is a marathon of two halves. The first half is the course used for the half marathon. It goes through the city center (past the castle) and round the scenic university and Wollaton Hall. Crowd support is very good (though a bit sporadic) and the course is generally flat and wide (although there are some narrower patches and a few short steep-ish hills that some may find tricky). In the second half, the route leaves the city and heads through an old housing estate onto rural roads, tracks (although they are generally flat and solid underfoot), round the water sports center and then along a track next to the river. If the weather is good, then the scenery is marvelous (but if it is wet and particularly if it is windy, then parts are very exposed and tricky). The second half is almost completely flat. Crowd support is small (although the volunteers at the drinks stations are enthusiastic) and the size of the field drops by about 90% once the half-marathon runners have stopped. Overall the organization is good, with adequate facilities at the finish. Aid stations are adequate (although don't expect to get any gels - we finished in 4 and a half hours but all stations had run out before we got there). It is my local marathon so I will certainly do it again as it is good. But it is no better than that, and you shouldn't necessarily make a huge effort to run it. But, if you are local, or it fits your schedule then go for it. If you are looking for a half-marathon, however, then I can highly recommend it, as nearly all the best bits of the day (course, crowd support, other runners, etc.) are in the first half.

"Good first 20 miles - and enjoyable" (about: 2007)
6-10 previous marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I just ran this race today and this was my first race outside the US. The organizers did a nice job, picking up the race pack (I registered just three days before the race) was easy, and the organization on race morning was very solid. This is not a small race as there are many that run the half marathon. This means lots of people were pushing the pace, which makes it tough to hold back as you are being passed frequently for the first half. I really enjoyed the first 18-20 miles of this race. There are several miles of trails on the course (most neatly maintained with the exception for the poor footing for about a half-mile between 17 and 18 miles). The first 10 are also undulating and crowd support over the first half is quite strong. My only complaint: between miles 20 and 23 you are running by a large regatta center that is completely exposed to the wind (it happened to be very windy today - ripped my number partially off) and that portion of the race seems never to end. You run alongside this regatta center for about 4750 meters before finally making your way to a small dirt trail which eventually leads you back into the city. Routing us away from the finish line and then making a hairpin turn just 1000 meters from the finish was just plain cruel. All in all, this was a good marathon and a good experience. With no wind, this could be a fast course.

"A well organized event" (about: 2006)
6-10 previous marathons
| 2 Robin Hood Marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I have completed this event 21 times but this was only my second time doing the full (previous - 1992). Very well organized and the best spectator support I can remember in many years. Particularly enjoyed running through the university grounds - a great addition for 2006. By way of minor criticism and not wanting to sound ungrateful to the organizers, I do think the entry fee of £25.00 (almost London Marathon prices!) warrants a more substantial goody bag than just the panel (extra £1.00 !) or medal. Anyway, looking forward to being back in 2007 to get my 22nd panel - but probably will only do the half. I think the new route is excellent.
