"Small Race, Fun Times" (about: 2019)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Gate City Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Course is double loop of Half course and is run on open roads for the most part. That being said the volunteers at all the intersections were great, I never felt lost (as I ran 20 miles alone) and I felt safe the entire time. Small race that is very well organized considering the size. 7am start is great at this time of year. Bonus gift (beach towel) for all those who BQ, which was a nice touch. Not many fans out to watch but was more than I expected for a 150 person Marathon race.

"Hopeful 50-Stater Mistake" (about: 2018)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Gate City Marathon
COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 1 After 35 fun, well-managed Marathons, a different experience. Waiting 3.5 months, five follow-ups, and still waiting for RD- 'promised' race medal. Confusing five crossing-loops course for runners and untrained volunteers leading runners off-course and unable to direct for real finish. Misleading course maps, missing water stations, and bag-check volunteers leaving for local bar with checked bags with runners still on course. No spectators except for start/finish. No Expo. Not for 50-Staters used to normal organized effort. Waste of travel time and money! New Hampshire has many other good options.

"Small, friendly, well-organized marathon race!" (about: 2018)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 Gate City Marathon
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 From packet pick-up to crossing the finishing line the race volunteers (namely Amanda) made me feel welcomed! Packet pick-up was organized and volunteers were very informative/helpful especially for an individual who wasn't from the area. Additionally, the store had all the needed essentials available. Getting to the start and parking was the easiest I have ever encountered for a marathon. Lots of volunteers available in the morning to assist if needed. Course for the marathon was 5 loops with all loops concluding at the start area which made it helpful for spectators and gave it a party atmosphere. One suggestion would be to have 5 distinct loops versus repeating an earlier loop. The volunteers at start, water stops, finish area were amazing. They were enthusiastic, helpful, and genuinely cheerful. Special thanks to Amanda who made me feel like a local. Race swag was pretty good especially if you were local to the area given movie/ball game tickets. Key improvement opportunity would be to have a technical shirt with a cool design. Recommend this race to anyone who is looking for a small, friendly, welcoming race!

"small but well done" (about: 2017)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Gate City Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Coming into this marathon, I was worried about the logistics. With 5 loops and a relatively small field of runners that included full marathoners, half-marathoners and relay runners, I was concerned that I'd take a wrong turn somewhere or start on the wrong loop. The organizers did a great job of clearly marking the loops and had volunteers stationed throughout to make sure runners avoided mistakes. Even though I'm a 'back of the pack' runner, there was still a lot of support and excitement at the finish line. Great time - thanks Nashua!

"Great small race" (about: 2017)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Gate City Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I really enjoyed this race, but I think your mileage may vary depending on what type of race you like. For me the pros outweighed the cons. Pros: Small race, so easy to pick up your bib even the morning of, and not too packed at the start. Good aid stations with enthusiastic volunteers. Well organized. Several miles were actually on a trail, around mile 20, which for me was a great way to break through that 20 mile sag in energy I usually feel (also was nice and cool with plenty of shade). Cons (not necessarily for me) Course is made up of loops although each loop was different enough for me to keep it interesting. Half marathon and relay means there are people running that are of course not running the full which I think can distract some people. Small race, so very thin in late miles of the race. Trails around mile 20 some people might not like.

| 1 Gate City Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I really enjoyed this race. It was very well organized, with lots of volunteers. Nice course through downtown, residential areas and along the river. There are quite a few road crossings but there were volunteers directing traffic at almost every one. The route loops back to the downtown about every 5 miles which makes it easy to see your spectators. |
