"Very challenging race" (about: 2022)

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 At over 6,000 feet elevation, most runners will not expect to PR in Cheyenne. Add the very difficult hills in the back half, no shade on a sunny day, and several miles of gravel roads and you have quite a challenge. Keep your expectations for time low and you can enjoy this race. Easy logistics as you park within yards of the start and finish. You may want to carry water as there is sometimes a 3 mile gap between aid stations. Surprisingly there are pacers for a race of only 60 full marathoners. Thanks to Charley who was excellent. Very nice shirt and medal and food at the finish. No real crowds of spectators but enough folks at the finish to give you a boost. For liquid refreshment go to Black Tooth Brewing or Blue Raven. Excellent burgers at Accomplice Brewing

| 1 Cheyenne Marathon: Run the Legend
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This was the second year of the Cheyenne Marathon. It is put on by the Kiwanis and some other civic organizations. They had a large number of volunteers doing their best. Packet pick-up was done in the plaza outside the Depot and it went smoothly when I was there. There was no expo. Despite advertising no race day packet pick-up they accommodated several runners before the start. There was only a mat at the finish, so all marathon times were gun times. It was not a huge issue since there were only about 200 marathoners. The first half of this year's course went out and through an Air Force base. It was gently rolling with decent scenery. However, since it was on a base there were no spectators. The second half went through the downtown area and the out into residential areas. Starting at about mile 15 we did a lot of climbing with it being mainly uphill between mile 19 and 22. The mile markers were long in the first half and then short for most of the second half. The overall mileage was correct though. Water stops were plentiful every 2 to 3 miles. They offered water, Powerade, Stingers, and Gu at most stops. At a few of the water stops you had to grab what you wanted off the table. The medal was cool and the shirt was a decent tech shirt. You were provided a bag with post race food in it. Not much of a selection. Overall the race organization did a good job, but they would benefit from consulting with some marathoners to continue to improve and add the niceties.

"A Great Start" (about: 2018)

| 1 Cheyenne Marathon: Run the Legend
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 For an inaugural race this was a really well organized marathon. The first half was mostly run on dirt roads outside of town (going West, so with the morning sun in your back, yah!), and during the second half wonderful course marshals made sure that you stayed on course, and away from cars, at almost every intersection. The pasta dinner the day before provided great opportunities to meet fellow runners, near and far. The course was well marked with pylons, and only once, in the parking lot of the Frontier Days, I got slightly confused, but a spectator helped me to stay on track. The RD was very responsive on Facebook, and would even accommodate late bib pickups at the pasta dinner. What could be improved? 1. It would be great if there was one more water stop on the first half, even if it was self-serve only. 2. I would also love if there were electrolyte or pretzels at every water stop. 3. Additional porta potties at the start would be appreciated. 4. Rather than bussing runners from the finish to the start after their race, I would recommend to consider to do so in the morning. After I had finished I waited for almost 45 minutes until we could persuade the 'half marathon bus' to bring us to the 'full marathon' start. Alternatively, have all three busses go on a circular route to all starts, depending on each runner's destination. I really, really hope that this race will be with us for many years to come, as the first iteration was such a success! I do recommend it, and would like to thank the RD and all the volunteers. You were amazing.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Way to go Cheyenne! What a wonderful first year! The sunrise was beautiful, rolling hills, and breathtaking countryside. I beyond enjoyed the change of scenery. As we ran into town, even got a honk from the train engineer! Perfect location for the finish, brewery right at the end, fun Band, and good hangout location. This small marathon is one to put on your to-do list. A little tid bit, it is higher elevation and dry... if you are from closer to sea level it will be a bit more difficult, but enjoy the new scenery and have fun! There are volunteers on every corner cheering you on!

| 1 Cheyenne Marathon: Run the Legend
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 Much of the first half was run on (surprise!) gravel roads - ugh. No water stop until mile 6 - ugh. The second half had a gazillion turns, and was confusing at several junctions - ugh. Thankfully the volunteers were there in droves, and they were awesome. Great band for the post-party, and very nice medals, but the post-race food was lacking.

"Great Inaugural Marathon" (about: 2018)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Very pretty and well run marathon. Started east of town at sunrises. Proceeded West into town. Numerous antelope initially running across road, later through the WY Hereford Ranch. After in town (just a little before half starting point) the fairly modest hills smoothed out with the exception of one at approx mile 16. Course also went past the capital building, Big Ben train locomotive and Frontier Days park. Aid stations every couple miles, gels only at 8 mile one but gummy's later. Relatively small crowds. The runner should remember that elevation 6200 ft and drier than average climate.

| 1 Cheyenne Marathon: Run the Legend
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This year was the inaugural year for this marathon so I went into this race with an open mind because with many inaugural races, there's always going to be some kinks. Packet pick up was pretty flawless although the window to pick up was very small (1-5pm) but the RD did offer to have packets delivered to people's hotels so that was nice. Race morning: It was a little confusing to get to the start from the parking lot, maybe there should've been some signs to point to where to go. Also, there wasn't very many restrooms. There was a building with a few stalls I heard and there was only one porta potty at the start. I would've recommended at least 5-6 porta potties. The first half of the race was a combo of gravel road/asphalt. It was very pretty in my opinion. The second half ran through town and I liked that set up. You definitely need more of the community and support for the second race for sure. Though I was not a fan of the ransom zig zags through parking lots. The spacing for the aid stations seemed off and was not a fan of the sport tea drink they had at some of the aid stations. Would've been nice to have Powerade/Gatorade at every aid station and some actual food would've been appreciated too if possible. I did study the map of the course beforehand but I still would've recommended some arrows/signage on the course. It got a bit confusing at times and I had heard a couple of people that ended up doing a bit extra because they weren't sure to go. Was a bit disappointed in the post race food options, would've been great if they had some better food options. They did provide fruit and yogurt and they gave you a beer ticket as well. I am not sure if there were other food options though. Real nice medal and shirt and this race doubled nicely with All Out Fall Fest Marathon in Colorado the day prior so good for those 50 staters. I think this race has great potential but just needs to work out some of the kinks. Everyone was super friendly and was really happy to see people come out to this event |
