"Good overall for my first" (about: 2023)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Great race overall besides the last 5 miles were lacking fans, any sort of aid, and they were almost exclusively in parking lots. Some highlights were the start and finish was easy to find and close to parking which was easy to get in and out of and traffic was clearly marked.

"Hilly and Hot" (about: 2023)

COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 1 I wanted to run this for my Alabama race (in the quest for all 50 states) and left extremely unsatisfied. The good: start/finish organization was very easy and this is one of the few races where it's easy to park near the starting area. The bad: Extremely hilly course through residential areas (the elevation map on the race website is misleading). Comical course design: In the quest to get to 26.2 miles, the course director had runners traverse several office and school parking lots in meandering patterns. Also, there were not enough course signs/mile markers or water stops. This can usually be fixed with volunteers (there weren't enough). Birmingham in early October could pass for summer anywhere else in the country: It was in the low 80s for most of the race, and most of the parking lot zig-zags were on unshaded black top. The last mile: this is the first marathon I've ever run where you run past the finish line (at mile 25!) so you can run another mile on inhospitable mixed gravel.

"Easy to get to and from race" (about: 2018)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I didn't realize this was the first year for the race until right before the start. This was my Alabama marathon on my quest for 50 states and DC. The whole race went off without any flaws from my vantage point. The course was interesting and certainly wasn't crowded. The after party was nice and the food was delicious. I would have stayed longer but my feet were cold from running the first hour or more in the rain. Although it was raining at the start we were able to find shelter a few feet from the starting line. Overall a good race and great for a fifty stater.

"BEST Marathon in Birmingham" (about: 2018)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 BHM26.2
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The course in this race truly showcases Birmingham at its best. It has variation with a few up hills followed by many down hills. It is really well-organized and just a lot of fun to run. The trophy and t-shirt are not too shabby either. I would choose this race over the other marathons in Birmingham any day. |
