2021 TCS New York City Marathon Women's Preview and Starter List

It must have been a disappointment to the New York City Marathon that the defending champion, Joyciline Jepkosgei chose to participate in the rescheduled London Marathon rather than return to New York to defend her title. As Jepkosgei ultimately won the London race, it was clear that she was in good shape and would have competed well in New York...even more of a disappointment that she would not run. Similarly, the 2019 runner-up and arguably best marathoner of all-time, Mary Keitany (the marathon world-record holder, 4-time NYC Marathon winner and 8-times on the NYC Marathon podium) would not return as she had just announced her retirement from running.
With the top two finishers from the prior, 2019, race not returning, New York found the best field it could and did a stellar job. At the top of the list and with the fastest personal best in the field, the gold-medalist from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics would lead the list of favorites. Behind her, New York was able to bring back four of the top 10 finishers from the very fast 2019 field: Ruti Aga (third in 2019, 2:25:51), Nancy Kiprop (4th in 2019, 2:26:21), Desiree Linden and Kellyn Taylor.
Of great excitement to Americans, the American field for the women's race would include the three women who represented the USA at the Tokyo Olympics: Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel and Sally Kipyego - and of course Seidel had earned the bronze medal at the Olympics. Beyond the three Olympians from the Tokyo Olympics, the field would hold three other American women who finished within the top 10 of the Olympic Trials Marathon: Laura Thweatt, Stephnie Bruse, Kellyn Taylor as well as the aforementioned Desiree Linden and Nancy Kiprop as well as Roberta Groner. Ultimately, the 2021 New York City Marathon could prove to be one of the strongest and deepest showcases of American women's marathoning talent.
