"Great Race!!" (about: 2008)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I am originally from North Little Rock, but have been away for 11 years. I brought a group of runners from Louisiana to do this race. I was so proud!! The organization was great, the volunteers so helpful, and overall, it was a great race experience. This was my 4th half marathon, and I had never seen a "perks" pavilion before. I loved it!! I will be back next year!! Thanks so much to everyone involved!!! | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Overall, not a bad race. The medal is HUGE! The switchback on the full marathon went on FOREVER (I'm not a fan of switchbacks on a race)! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was a wonderful surprise! I didn't expect too much (since I had chosen it because of the easy access from Dallas), but ended up feeling like it was one of the best marathons I have ever run. Even being in the latter group of the runners, there were mounds of oranges and bananas and plenty of liquids! It was well supported and the people surrounding the run were incredible. What a pleasant surprise... but don't underestimate the hills!! Whew, there were hills! I've done everything from San Fran to New York and the hills were challenging for sure. But I will happily run this one again! And, WHAT A MEDAL!! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The 2008 race was outstanding. The volunteers did a great job of organizing the course. No lines to check-in. There were much better support stations than at the bigger races that I have run. The course is tough, but fair. The weather in 2008 heated up a little warmer than would have been ideal, but the course and finishing bonuses were great (world's largest medal plus a training t-shirt). Overall, outstanding race. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This is my sixth LR Marathon. Obviously I really like it, because I don't live in LR and have to journey there. The fun atmosphere and the welcoming attitude are what keep bringing me back. Here are the highlights from this year: 1) Course change. I like the new start, but I miss the old finish. I enjoyed running downhill to the state capitol. It was more dramatic, and there was more room for spectators to cheer runners on until the very end. The finish line area seemed a lot smaller. Now, maybe that is okay for people whose families meet them and then hang out in the park by the river, but I missed the wide open space for just runners. I just finished and left, so maybe someone who hung out there would have appreciated it more. The new start was fine, maybe better. There were more open buildings for runners to go in. 2) Better expo. There were more running related exhibitors than ever. I spent more money than ever! I got a kick out of the strong AARP presence. This year there was a special program to get seniors involved, so it did make sense. 3) Big medal. The biggest ever. We were joking that the state prison inmates stopped pressing license plates, and had been pressing these giant medals. 4) Other tweaks and changes. I do like that every year this race tries to be better, more exciting, and more accessible. There is a long-standing kids' run. And a 5K. And a relay. And a half. Now there is a senior's run. We'll see what happens next time. The lipstick stop was more prominent, and featured a longer-lasting lipstick. What else? The day was a bit warmer than usual. The hills were still there. There were more musical acts. Still the happy churchgoers that come out to cheer. Plenty of water, Gatorade, and gels. Great police support - I single them out for special recognition. I've never seen so many helpful, glad-to-be-out police. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The expo was average, but the race went very smoothly. It started right on time, with tons of volunteers, and every stop had water and Gatorade (and many had fruit, gels, and hard candies). There were tons of very enthusiastic fans. The course was challenging, but not unfair. Everything before and during the race was great, but the post-race area sucked. I got my medal, and then I was offered either a cup of water or Gatorade, a banana or an orange, and was handed a baggy with a bag of chips and a couple of cookies in it. That was it; no tables with food, no Cokes, no bottles of water or Gatorade, and no beer, for that matter. You could have bought a $20 ticket to a special "perks pavilion" beforehand. If I would have known how bad the post-race spread was, I might have gotten one. It just put a damper on an otherwise excellent event. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I had a very positive experience today in the Little Rock Marathon, although the course was hillier than I would have liked, especially at the end. The expo workers, runners and spectators were extremely friendly, although there were long stretches of the course, especially the middle miles, where there were not a lot of spectators. The one (minor) criticism that I have about the aid stations was that on several occasions the water tables were on one side of the street while the Gatorade tables were on the other side of the street. For someone like me who likes to mix the two, it makes things a little difficult, but it was no big deal. There was also a lot to do in Little Rock over a long weekend. All in all, it was a great race! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The expo, pre-race stuff, and especially the finish line were spectacular. The city really turned out to support the race. Some good hills, but the course was well marked, scenic, and there was some nice music along the way. My favorite part (beyond the obvious reasons) was the finish line: the greeters, the chip removers, and the guys and gals handing out medals were all SO FRIENDLY! One person even peeled a banana for me. The guys at the milk truck (free milk, yogurt, and even chocolate milk) were very nice too. I'm looking forward to doing this race again. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon, I loved it. It took me six hours, but I was cheered the whole way there. It was like I was winning the race. Whenever I thought I was going to die, someone would cheer me on. The "out and back" did seem to drag on forever, but when I look back, it was one hell of an accomplishment. I am going to do it again. |
